Application

Transformers supplying electrical consumers in control and regulating environments where space is a consideration.Low weight, minimum no-load loss, no humming, no interference fields and the excellent adaptationto a defined volumeare some of the special features of these transformers.Reliable system separation is optained by the use as isolating or saftey isolating transformer.Dimensioning as autotransformer brings substantial savings in comparison with transformers with separate windings.

The following technical explanations provide useful informa-tion on important technical terms used in this catalog.Depending on the proposed use, additional or differentdefinitions may be required. The following explanations aretherefore not exhaustive.Ring core transformers have several important advantagesover two-limb core or shell-type transformers. Ring coretransformers of similar rating have up to 40 % less volumeand weight. Ring cores are available in nearly any size.Minimum no-load loss, little current consumption, no hum, negligible leakage fields and design to protection class IIare some of the features which are possible due to the inbo-ard and closed core. The technical feasibility of different geometries depends onthe height and the remaining hole in the finished ring coretransformer. For production reasons, high currents are hand-led by the parallel arrangement of windings.

Fusing

Fusing at the primary side is somewhat of a problem becau-se the inrush current can be as high as 25 times the ratedcurrent, which depends on the size and type of the ringcore transformer. For this reason, the input side fusing inmost cases provides protection only against short circuitand the fuses are slow-blowing.The required fuse on the secondary side is specified on thenameplate. Information on possible additional fusing of theprimary side is provided on request.

Connction

The system voltage of variable toroidal transformers shouldnot permanently exceed the nameplate rated input voltageby more than 5 % because the contact point at which cur-rent is tapped will become very hot due to higher windingresistance. The variable toroidal transformers are designedfor 50 to 60 Hz frequency and can be used with up to400 Hz frequency.

Vector group

The type in which the windings are connected is indicatedby the connection symbol. The connection symbol consistsof a capital letter and a small letter and a number designa-ting the phase position. The capital letter stands for the primary winding and thesmall letter for the secondary winding. If no customer speci-fication is available, ring core transformers are designed asautotransformers in I0 and as power or safety isolatingtransformers in Ii0. Variable toroidal transformers are gene-rally designed as autotransformers in Ia0 and Ya0, respecti-vely.

Drives

The mechanical stops limiting the rotation in variable toroi-dal transformers with manual adjustment must not be over-come by force. This can destroy the transformer. The motor drive in all transformers is stopped by limit swit-ches with adjustable control discs just before the end of themechanical rotation is reached. The rotation can be set asrequired by means of the discs.

Protection types

The protection type marking consists of a code of two con-stant letters, viz. "IP" and two digits, e.g., IP 23.

Maintenance

Maintenance of our variable toroidal transformers is limited tocleaning the contact decks and inspection of the moving con-tacts for correct movement. Depending on the service conditi-ons, dust should be removed from the contact decks with asoft brush or air every 6 months or more frequently. The con-tact deck can be wiped clean with a cloth wetted with spirit.Black, bright traces on the contact deck which are left by thecarbon contact roller are no reason for concern. The carbonrollers must be true and turn properly when the setting of themoving contact is adjusted. Sticking, untrue or damaged car-bon contact rollers must be replaced.

The bearings of the carbon contact rollers must notbe lubricated.

Laws and regulations

Unless required otherwise, we make our ring core transfor-mers and variable toroidal transformers to reflect state-of-theart and comply with the following laws and regulations:

Ring core types :DIN EN 61558-1/ VDE 0570 part 1/07.98in conjunction with VDE 0750DIN EN 61558-2-2 / VDE 0570 part 2-2 /10.98DIN EN 61558-2-4 / VDE 0570 part 2-4 /07.98DIN EN 61558-2-6 / VDE 0570 part 2-6 /07.98DIN EN 61558-2-13 / VDE 0570 part 2-13/08.00

Description Explanation

0 No protection No protection availableharmful effect.

1Protection againstdrops of water fal-ling vertically

Drops of water falling vertically shall have noharmful effect.

3Protection againstspray water

Water falling from any angle less than 60degrees from vertical shall have no harmfuleffect.

4Protection againstsplash water

Water splashing from any direction shall haveno harmful effect.

5Protection againstwater jets

A jet of water from a nozzle directed at thetransformer from any direction shall have noharmful effect.

6Protection againstflooding

Three-phase variable toroidal transformers

The neutral in three-phase variable toroidal transformers instar connection is brought out electrically isolated. The neu-tral must not be used to provide an artificial neutral point;every phase of such a transformer can be put under ratedcurrent load of the system neutral (neutral conductor) andthe transformer neutral are connected with each other.

Insulation classes

The provisions of IEC 60085 and IEC 60216 describe theheat resistance if insulation classes.

Protection class

The protection class is a design feature of a product whichdesignates safety against shock current.Protection class I: Product with safety ground terminal

and basic insulation Protection class II: Product without safety ground terminal

and double or extra strong insulation.Ring core transformers from SBA generally conform withprotection class II.

Ratings

The current and output ratings in the catalog are for continu-ous operation. The rated current can be tapped constantlyacross the full control range.

Installation and cooling

Operation at rated output is possible without restriction atambient temperatures of up to 40 °C and up to 1000 maltitude above sea level. If the transformer is installed in ahousing in which the ambient temperature rises to above 40 °C, the ring core transformer must either be cooled byfan or the rated current must be reduced as shown in thefollowing diagram.
