The word Carol derives from the old FrenchCarole meaning a Circle Dance, popular inthe 13th Century, and in which the dancerswould hold hands in a circle whilst a leaderwould sing melodies, and refrains would besung by the other dancers. Carole or Carolain turn has its etymology in the Latin Choraulismeaning in various contexts either a player ofreed pipes, a dance accompanied by a flute,or the choir’s rehearsal room in a church. It iseasy to see how all of the meanings haveconspired over many centuries to mean whatwe understand by the word Carol today, andwhile some carols are contemplative, othersretain a strong dance character, and nearlyall have some element of verses and refrains.Tonight’s concert by Charnwood Voices offersmusic and words whose origins range fromthe 12th century (There is no Rose), all theway to an arrangement of Carol of the Bellscomposed only last month! In so doing, wevisit many countries and cross threecontinents, providing what we hope will be aninspiring mix of the well-known and the newlydiscovered, to transport you firmly into the truespirit of the Christmas season.
