It was much appreciated. I hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend. It was nice having an extra day off but I spent too much time watching news and weather reports. It was a tragic weekend for so many and my heart goes out to all who are suffering. It’s really hard to believe that Texas had two mass shootings in less than a month. I was born and raised in El Paso, so that one hit close to home for me. I worked in the Midland-Odessa area for a couple of years and my employer has an office and yard in Odessa. Thankfully, all of our employees and their families are safe. I hope all of you can say the same. It certainly seems like a perfect time for active-shooter training. It is so hard to see the loss of life and devastation in the Bahamas but heart- warming to see the outpouring of support for those who are suffering. Dorian has been downgraded to a Category 3 but it is still packing winds of 120 mph and headed dangerously close to the east coast of the United States. Gusts of over 100 mph have hit Florida’s east coast. There are evacuation orders in place in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. I know all of us will keep everyone in the path of this storm in their thoughts. Be safe, stay vigilant, and check out www.rims.org for information on everything risk related. UPCOMING EVENTS A Message from our President

Thanks to all who attended the Astros game with us. It was a lot of fun. Kudos to our happy hour hosts, JBKnowledge, Inc., for a great time before the game at Jackson Street BBQ. It was a great choice for a pre-game meetup with good food and giveaways. Ivar Cuellar with HP Inc. won a $100 gift card donated by JBKnowledge. Thank you to Allison Davis and her team who worked so hard putting this together and sponsoring it for us.

There is a very good article at www.rims.org, “Active Shooter Preparedness For Your Organization” by Justin Smulison.

Hurricane Dorian was definitely newsworthy. It is so hard to see the loss of life and devastation in the Bahamas but heart-warming to see the outpouring of support for those who are suffering. Dorian has been downgraded to a Category 3 but it is still packing winds of 120 mph and headed dangerously close to the east coast of the United States.

ARM 54-Risk Management Principles and Practices

*************************************************************************************

RIMS Houston Chapter Congratulates Ross Brown, a UH Student who recently obtained his ARM. We asked Ross to share his reasons for obtaining his ARM.

First, it was an outstanding way for me to better familiarize myself with key industry concepts and terminology that I had previously been exposed to but not in the degree of depth that I wanted. Second, given that I am actively looking for full-time employment in the insurance and risk management industry upon graduation next summer and that I am taking a non-traditional path in doing so, I knew that getting my ARM would help establish my professional credibility and help to stave off employer concerns that I wasn’t qualified because I didn’t have any previous industry work experience. Third, I know that the information I learned from my ARM studies will prove invaluable once I start working professionally in the insurance and risk management industry.
