The fifteen-year-old was straight off to a training camp af- ter her win on Sunday, honing her skills on two wheels. “I have been lucky enough to be selected to join a national mountain biking team Torq Merida Australia,” Hosking said. “I am the most junior rider, so I will be learning from riders from my category to elites and all the support staff. “It’s pretty cool that Holly Harris, three times national champion, is also in the team. “Holly’s sort of shown me and the other Armidale riders what’s possible in mountain biking if you put your mind to it.” The teenager was thrilled when she was presented with the award in Armidale over the weekend. She said she was not expect- ing hear her name called “Last year I was nominated, but didn’t win, I was amazed at what the other nominees and winners had achieved and felt quite inferior,” Hosking said. “I have been lucky to be given great opportunities and a lot of sup- port by many people.” The award is sure to provide a huge confidence boost for the young rider, who dreams of tak- ing her sport to an international level in the future. “I am really keen to go to New Zealand in March 2016 for the Oceania Games and give the Kiwis a run for their money,” she said. “In the last Oceanias I had a tough race and finished fourth after a few crashes. “The Kiwis are definitely awe- some mountain bikers and great girls. “I love mountain biking and would like to keep pushing and training hard.” PEDAL PUSHING POWER: NIAS Female Athlete of the Year Katherine Hosking. ARMIDALE RIFLE CLUB NEWS ON SUNDAY afternoon, five members competed in the Armidale Rifle Club’s 600 yard match. There was a light wind coming from the SSW changing to NNW with an added mirage. In F-Class Standard Ian Moffatt was the overall winner for the day scoring 108.4. There were no target rifle competitors. Results: F Class standard. SPORTING SHOOTERS’ LAST weekend shooting was held at Armidale on Sunday with a Field Rifle event. No results available. This weekend shooting will be held at the Woodlawn, Uralla range on Sunday with several disciplines: Service Rifle, Centrefire Field Rifle, Rimfire and Centrefire Benchrest, Single Action and Shotgun will available during the day. The Varmint Shoot will again be held for the Ian Barger Memorial Shield. This will be a 20 shot event with no sighters allowed and shot over 100 and 200 yards. The Varmint shoot will commence as soon as possible after the Benchrest Range opens in the morning for those people interested and general shooting will be available as usual. Come along with your off the shelf centrefire hunting rifles and enjoy the shoot. The winner will be presented with the Ian Barger Memorial Shield at the Annual General Meeting in February. The Steve Waugh Foundation Captain’s Ride begins this Sunday in Sydney. Over six days a team of 60 cyclists will ride 920 kilometres from Sydney to Byron Bay hoping at every stage to put another raise disease on the map and raising money. Waugh, Gavin Robertson and Danny Frawley will be at Armidale’s Harvey Norman on Wednesday for a 6am barbecue breakfast be- fore heading off to Dorrigo at 7am.
