After notice of defect in material and/or workmanship is received by The Marlin Firearms Company, Marlin shallsend instructions for shipment of the firearm; and repairs will be made and the firearm returned within a reasonable time after the firearm is received. Before You Use This FirearmIt is very important that you read andunderstand this manual before using thisfirearm. Warnings should be read andheeded carefully. Also follow “Marlin'sGuide to Gun Safety” in this manual.

•WARNING: Marlin firearms are designedand manufactured to handle standardfactory-loaded ammunition which con-forms to SAAMI (Sporting Arms andAmmunition Manufacturers’ Institute Inc.)standards with dependability and safety.Due to the many bullet and load optionsavailable, the element of judgementinvolved, the skill required, and the factthat serious injuries have resulted fromdangerous handloads, Marlin does notmake any recommendations with regardto handloaded ammunition.

How to Operate the Safety•WARNING: Prior to firing, become famil-iar with the operation of the safety bypracticing with the rifle unloaded.

The safety mechanism is a round buttonlocated behind the trigger. To put your rifleon SAFE, hold it in the normal shooting posi-tion, pointed in a safe direction, and push thesafety button from left to right as far as it willgo. The safety is now on SAFE (See A).

To move the safety to the FIRE position,push the safety button from right to left as

far as it will go. A red ring around the safe-ty button will be visible when the safety isin the FIRE position (See B). If the triggeris pulled with the safety in this position, thegun will fire.

•WARNING: Never disassemble the safety.It has been correctly designed, fitted andtested, and is not reversible. Any mechani-cal device can fail, however, so never relyon the safety to justify careless handling.Never use a firearm with a safety that doesnot function properly. (See instructions forfactory maintenance in this manual.)

when the magazine, feedthroat, andchamber are empty). The bolt will stopabout half way to the open position (SeeC). With the bolt in this position, youshould visually check to be sure that thechamber is empty and the orange maga-zine follower is visible in the feedthroat,indicating that the magazine is empty. Toclose the bolt completely, with the safetyon SAFE, and the gun empty, press thebolt release lever in the front of the triggerguard (See C). As long as the magazineremains empty, the automatic bolt hold-open will engage each time the bolt ispulled all the way back.

Manual Bolt Hold-Open Feature

In addition to the automatic “last shot” bolthold-open, which stops the bolt about halfway back, the bolt can also be manuallylocked in the fully open position. Thisdevice makes it easy to clean the cham-ber, feedthroat and bore.

First, with the chamber and magazineempty, pull the charging handle all the wayback, and hold it. Now engage the lock bypushing the charging handle to the left, inthe direction of the arrow on the back ofthe handle (See D & E).

To close the action, pull the charging han-dle out to the right and let it snap forward(See E1). Then press the bolt releaselever in front of the trigger guard to com-pletely close the bolt.

•WARNING: Releasing the manual bolthold-open while the inner magazine islocked in place and there are cartridgesin the feeding system, will close the boltand chamber a cartridge.

•WARNING: When not in use, the safestpossible way to handle your rifle is com-

pletely unloaded, with the action open,the safety on SAFE, and pointed in asafe direction.

How to Load•WARNING: Never attempt to load yourrifle with ammunition that does not meetthe cartridge designation stamped onthe barrel. Use only clean, dry, factory-loaded ammunition which conforms toindustry standards.

•WARNING: Your rifle is a self-loading.22 caliber designed for .22 Long RifleHigh Velocity cartridges only (not Hyper-Velocity). Shorts, Longs, and Shot car-tridges can be loaded and fired, butMarlin does not recommend them, asfeeding will not be reliable and damageor injury may result from their use.

•WARNING: Before loading your rifle,always check the bore and chamber tobe sure they are free of grease, oil orany other obstruction.

•WARNING: This rifle will not functionproperly unless the inner magazine tubeis locked securely in place.

•WARNING: Never add cartridges to apartially loaded tubular magazine.

•WARNING: The following procedure is theonly recommended method of loading.

Be sure the chamber is empty, the safetyis on SAFE, the bolt is in the “last shot”automatic hold-open position, and the rifleis pointed in a safe direction.To load the magazine, turn the rifle upsidedown and, keeping your fingers away fromthe muzzle, unlock the inside magazinetube by turning the knurled locking endplug (See F). Extract the inside tube fromthe outside tube until the loading port isexposed (See G).

With the muzzle raised, drop Long Riflecartridges into the loading port, bullet endtoward the muzzle (See G). When youhave loaded up to 14 cartridges, slide thetube back in place, turning it slightly toease passage over the loaded rounds.DO NOT FORCE THE TUBE DOWN.Then rotate the knurled locking end plugto the locked position.

The inner tube will not lock in place if thenumber of cartridges loaded exceeds thestated magazine capacity.

•WARNING: Your rifle is not designed tobe single-loaded. Always load cartridgesthrough the magazine as directed above.

With the safety on SAFE and the riflepointed in a safe direction, close the boltby pressing the bolt release lever in frontof the trigger guard (See C). This shouldclose the bolt on an empty chamber. Now,to chamber a cartridge, you must pull the

charging handle all the way back and letthe bolt snap forward again (See H & I).

•WARNING: Your rifle is now cocked andready to fire as soon as the safety ispushed to the FIRE position.

How to FirePush the safety to the “FIRE” position and,with the rifle pointed at the target, squeezethe trigger. Since your rifle is self-loading,after each shot it is ready to be fired again,until the magazine, feedthroat, and chamberare empty, at which point the automatic “lastshot” bolt hold-open will engage.

If you do not fire all cartridges in the maga-zine, be sure to put the safety on “SAFE”until you are ready to shoot again.

•WARNING: Because of its self-loadingaction, if the bolt of your rifle is com-pletely closed, you must assume that itis cocked and loaded.

How to Unload•WARNING: Before you unload, be sureyour rifle is on SAFE and pointed in asafe direction, and that your fingers areaway from the muzzle and the trigger.

Be sure the inner magazine tube is lockedin place. Cycle the action repeatedly bypulling the charging handle all the wayback and letting it snap forward (See J).

Repeat this action until the ejection of car-tridges ceases. When the last cartridgehas been ejected, the automatic bolt hold-open will engage (See C).

Any mechanical device can fail, soALWAYS CHECK THE CHAMBER ANDFEEDTHROAT VISUALLY TO BE SURENO CARTRIDGES REMAIN. The orangemagazine follower is visible in thefeedthroat when the magazine is empty.

What to do if your Rifle Fails to Fire1. Misfire. If you have squeezed the triggerand nothing happens, remain in shootingposition, pointing the gun in a safe direc-tion. Count to 10, then unload the rifle com-pletely (See “How to Unload”).

2. Underpowered shot. A “squib” orunderpowered shot, should not occur ifthe ammunition is clean, dry, and facto-ry loaded. You can tel l i f a shot isunderpowered by the unusually lowsound it makes.

•WARNING: Because the bullet mayactually still be in the barrel, you mustunload completely, and determine, witha cleaning rod, if there is an obstruction.If there is, it should be removed by aqualified gunsmith. Otherwise, personalinjury or damage could result.

SightingYour rifle has been sighted-in and test-fired at the factory. Due to individualshooting characteristics, however, sightingshould be range verified.

1.) Vertical Correction (Elevation)

To raise the point of impact, raise the rearsight, by moving the sight elevator rear-ward. To lower the point of impact, lowerthe rear sight, by moving the sight elevatorforward. The sight can be raised and low-ered by moving the stepped elevator for-ward and back with your thumb.

2.) Horizontal Correction (Windage)

To move the point of impact to the left, tapthe rear sight base to the left. To movethe point of impact to the right, tap therear sight base to the right.

Windage adjustments to the rear sightcan be made by gently tapping the dove-tai l port ion of the rear sight in thedesired direction.

Scope MountingYour rifle has a grooved receiver designedto handle tip-off-type 22 scope bases. Theyare made by Tasco, Weaver, and others,and are available through your local gundealer. You may also order directly fromMarlin Gun Service. Call 1-800-544-8892 for more information.

How to Clean Your Rifle•WARNING: Never attempt to wipe down orclean a loaded firearm. Follow instructionsunder “How to Unload” before cleaning.

Caution: Before using any solvent or othergun cleaning product, read the label care-fully to be sure it will not damage either thefinish, or any parts of this firearm.NOTE for stainless steel models:Although stainless steel is corrosion-resis-tant, it can rust. If the rifle gets wet, dirty, or

is subject to excessive handling, wipedown metal parts with oil or a rust-inhibitor.Minor scratches can be “buffed out” ofstainless steel with a “Scotch-BriteTM

Very Fine” pad, available in hardwareand automotive supply stores.

Cleaning the BoreSince modern ammunition burns very clean-ly, with normal use it is not necessary toclean the bore of your rifle. However, if it getswet, or if any foreign material gets into theaction or barrel, cleaning as described belowis recommended.With the safety on SAFE, visually checkthe chamber and feedthroat to be sure nocartridges remain in the rifle. The orangemagazine follower should appear in thefeedthroat. Next, pull the charging handleall the way back and lock in the manualhold-open position.To clean the bore and barrel, use anystandard .22 caliber commercial cleaningrod and cleaning patches. Clean the barrelwith powder solvent and wipe lightly withgun oil after cleaning.

Cleaning the ActionWe recommend that you wear safetyglasses while disassembling this rifle.

We recommend cleaning the inside of thereceiver, bolt face, extractors, and butt endof the barrel (around the chamber) after fir-ing each 250 rounds. (Frequency of clean-ing may depend on brand of ammunitionused.) A toothbrush and commercial guncleaning solvent will simplify the job. (Besure to follow manufacturer of gun clean-er's directions, as some chemicals maydamage the synthetic trigger guard.)

The steps listed below should be followedcarefully to assure proper disassembly,cleaning and reassembly.

Step #1 — With the safety on SAFE andthe inner magazine tube locked in place,unload the gun and visually check to bedoubly sure no cartridges remain. Thenclose the action completely.

Step #2 — The inner magazine tubeshould be removed in accordance withthe procedure described under “Howto Load”.

Step #3 — Unscrew takedown screws Aand B as shown in K. Separate the rifleinto two segments, the first consisting ofthe stock and trigger assembly, the sec-ond consisting of the barrel and action.

Release assembly post by squeezing andpushing in slotted end. Pull post free ofaction (See L). Remove action by sliding itto the rear and up (See M).

Step #4 — With the action removed, thebolt, charging handle, recoil spring andspring guide may now be removed. •WARNING: Recoil spring is compressedat this point and, if not handled properly,can fly from the receiver.

Pull the charging handle back slightly and,with the forefinger of your other hand, liftthe muzzle end of the bolt from the receiv-er (See N).

As you begin to lift the bolt out, the charg-ing handle will become free and can beremoved. The recoil spring and springguide are now within easy reach forremoval (See O).

Step #5 — The barrel, receiver and actionare now ready for thorough cleaning. Theaction should be cleaned in solvent, dried,and oiled sparingly prior to reassembly.Lift muzzle end of breech bolt from receiver

If not, ship it to the factory,following the “Shipping and Handling”instructions on this page.After receiving your firearm, we will sendyou an estimate of the repair cost. Repairswill begin upon receipt of your check ormoney order. If repairs are not possible,your firearm will be returned.

Shipping and Handling

When sending your firearm to the factoryplease follow these instructions:

1. Prior to shipping, be absolutely certainthat the firearm is completely unloaded(See “How to Unload” in this manual).

2. Pack your firearm carefully. Use amplecushioning material and a sturdy outercardboard box. Do not ship in a specialcontainer which you want returned.

Further disassembly of the action is notrecommended and should only be attempt-ed by a qualified gunsmith or the factory.

Step #6 — (Reassembly is easier if gun issecured in a padded vise, or held by anassistant.) To reassemble, place recoilspring guide into one end of recoil spring,then place opposite end of spring intobreech bolt. Next, put recoil spring guideinto hole at the rear of the receiver. Toprevent kinking the spring, hold breechbolt and recoil spring in one hand and usethe other hand to support the spring asshown in P, while compressing spring untilguide enters breech bolt.

Step #7 — The charging handle can nowbe positioned through the ejection port. Tocomplete the insertion of the breech bolt,be sure the charging handle fits into theslot provided for it in the bolt.

Reinstall the action by pulling the charginghandle all the way back and locking it inthe open position, and reversing the actiondisassembly procedure (See Q).

When reassembling the barreled actionand stock, be sure the receiver is seatedas far back in the stock as it will go whiletightening the takedown screw. Otherwise,the rifle may not fire.

Use a very thin coat of light oil during belowfreezing conditions. Condensation dropletswill form soon after the rifle is brought into awarm room, or it may become wet duringinclement weather. In any case, all moistureshould be removed. Exterior metal finishesmay be wiped down with a lightly oiledcloth. For long term storage, lightly oil thebore, barrel and action with gun oil. Yourgun should be completely unloaded andstored in a dry area with the action open.Never store your gun in a carrying case.

Repair InstructionsYour firearm has been designed, engi-neered and manufactured in accordancewith Marlin's rigid quality control standards.However, any mechanical device mayoccasionally require adjustment or repair.

Questions regarding the performance andserviceability of your firearm should beaddressed to Marlin Gun Service. Youshould include the Serial Number, ModelNumber and a full description of the condi-tions and problems involved.

Warranty RepairsOur Warranty policy covers all our firearmsagainst defects in workmanship or materialfor a period of five years from the date of
