Encouraging Economic Development in Richmond

As a vital part of Richmond, Chevronstrives to encourage a robust anddiverse business climate in theRichmond community. In addition tothe jobs at the refinery and RichmondTechnology Center, we also support

many more jobs indirectly through the businesses —large and small — that provide goods and services tosupport our operations.

Over the past several years, we have been working toincrease the services and products purchased from localbusinesses and contractors and will continue to look foropportunities to do so. We’re proud to report that in thelast year, we increased our local spend by 28 percent,from $57.7 million in 2013 to $73.9 million. In thisnewsletter, we feature several of those Richmond-areabusinesses that help us keep this refinery in operation,from providing food service to mechanical contracting.

We are continually working to promote an inclusivebusiness environment and network of suppliersreflective of the communities where we operate.Supporting local economic growth in Richmond is animportant priority.

Plant Reclamation is a family-owned and operatedbusiness that specializes in industrial demolition inrefineries and chemical plants. We not only removemachinery and equipment, but we also recycle thematerials in a safe, efficient and environmentallyfriendly manner. We have worked with Chevron since1970s when William “Bill” Glueck started the companyin Richmond. Since the beginning, our priority has beento promote the workforce in Richmond. As a Richmondnative, I’ve personally had the opportunity to bementored by Chevron professionals and excel as acontractor as a result. Chevron is a family environment,and we value our strong and long-standing partnership.

Compass Group provides food services to the ChevronRefinery in Richmond and many other Chevronoperations around the world. For the past 10 years,Compass has serviced Chevron locations across theUnited States and as far as Kazakhstan. In December,Compass expanded the partnership to the RichmondRefinery. Proudly providing café and catering servicesto the refinery, Compass takes seriously theopportunities to hire locally. In support of the Bay AreaRescue Mission, prepackaged and non-perishable foodsare provided to families in need. Compass is alsoplanning to partner with local restaurants, who meet thefood safety and legal requirements, to extend theirfoods and services to the refinery cafe.

What do you like best about your job? My favorite part of my job is the interaction with people. It’s niceto be able to help our suppliers and customers accomplish theirgoals, whether that means getting an invoice paid or just helpingthem find out what they need to know to start doing businesswith Chevron.

What do you like best about working at Chevron? Chevron has provided the greatest opportunity to be able tointeract with the community, whether it’s volunteering, diningout or getting involved in civic issues. My children go to school inRichmond, and last year I probably volunteered more than 100hours at local schools, talking about Science, Technology,Engineering and Math education and work readiness.

How did you get a job at Chevron? When I was a student at Cal State Hayward (now Cal State EastBay), Chevron came out and talked to students. At the time I wasunclear about what I wanted to do, but an opportunity came upat Chevron and I pursued it. I started working at Chevron inConcord in the accounting department. I’ve worked in Richmondfor the past five years.

What do you like best about living in Richmond? As a Richmond native, this city is my home. My favorite part istruly the weather, which allows you to do so much, like enjoylocally-grown foods and appreciate the beautiful shoreline. It’sone of the best places because you don’t have to go far to get awhole lot.

Favorite restaurant? Anna’s Place, 11740 San Pablo Ave. It’s a really small, family-friendly café. It reminds me of a restaurant my mom once owned.It’s open, airy, relaxed and feels like home.

Common misperception about Chevron? Not just as an employee but as a resident, the biggestmisconception is that this is not a safe place to work and live.Chevron’s first priority is safety. It’s second nature here. It’s notonly part of our lives from 9am to 5pm but you take it home. Youshare it with your parents. You tell your neighbors. People thinkthat Chevron only talks about safety when referring to thingsthat happen at the refinery. But it’s promoted 24/7, whetheryou’re out in the plant or sit at a computer all day.

¿Qué es lo que más te agrada de tu trabajo? La parte favorita de mi trabajo es la interacción con la gente. Hablas de ello con tus vecinos. La gente piensa queChevron sólo habla de la seguridad para referirse a cosas queocurren en la refinería. Pero se promueve las 24 horas del día, lossiete días de la semana, ya sea que estés en la planta o sentadofrente a una computadora todo el día.
