Another year has come and gone and sale season is upon us once again. It feels redundant to admit again this has been a year of turmoil and chaos, but here we are. 2020 has proven that truly anything can happen. However, amongst the pandemonium the agricultural community has stayed strong and composed reaffirming our resiliency to adversity and challenge. This is something we should all be proud of. Now more than ever we need this resiliency to do our part to be good stewards for our industry and push forward.

We have put our nose to the grindstone and are excited to offer a stout, hearty set of bulls for you this year. This set of bulls are the heaviest we have had and by far the most even across the board. We are hard pressed to find one we wouldn’t use ourselves. They have performed better than ever on the conditions we gave them this summer and came into the feedlot ready to perform. We are impressed with their easy fleshing ability and docility.

One trait we have been working hard on in our herd is fertility. We feel the Angus breed has deviated to far from expectations in this area. We have strictly culled our females who don’t breed in the first 45 days, did not carry a calf to term, or did not calve easily and get that calf up and moving. This has really been reflected in our bulls as we only had 2 fall below our minimum standard for their breeding soundness exam. Longevity and durability are our top goals. In these uncertain times, every dollar you invest in your cow herd needs to count and needs to provide a return. We acknowledge this need and strive to provide that return to our customers.

Our ET program is continuing to grow with exciting new donors and matings. Our first set of ET calves is in the yearling pen now and is truly jaw dropping. We can’t wait to offer you full flush brothers and close sibs in next year’s sale. We have big plans for this program and our customers will be the major benefactors.

All the bulls for sale have passed an extensive breeding soundness exam including sound feet and legs, visual acuity, and satisfactory semen and reproductive anatomy. Further details about the scoring can be found on the individual BSE sheets.

All bulls have an extensive herd health regimen consisting of multiple Vision 7 Somnus vaccinations and Vista Once 5-way respiratory vaccinations. They have had an initial vaccination followed by a booster of Vista 3 VL5 SQ helping to effectively eliminate any viral causes of subfertility. Safeguard oral drench has also been administered.

Bred heifers are on Vista 3 VL5 SQ regimen and have received Safeguard anthelmintic. They have been confirmed pregnant via ultrasound in late August and again prior to sale day.

Bull Development ProgramThe bulls have been developed with no creep feed, on

native range and mother’s milk. Weaning begins around the middle of October. 25-30% of the bulls will be culled for structure and performance ability. At this time, the bulls head to our home feed yard where they are placed on a high roughage diet consisting of chopped hay, silage, modified distillers grain, and whole corn. The bulls are not pushed for the highest average daily gain, but are developed more slowly with a target gain of 2.75 pounds per day.

By mid-April, another 10% will be culled. By May 1st, all bulls will be turned out on grass with a complete salt and mineral package as well as protein tubs pending the quality of the grass.

October 1st the bulls are headed home to the feed yard again and are put back on their high forage ration consisting of chopped hay, silage, modified distillers, and whole corn. The same principles are applied in reference to average daily gain and moderate development to maintain optimum foot and leg structure.

Fertility and structural soundness are our highest priority from birth to sale day. We achieve this by strictly culling at multiple stages of life. We feel this ensures we are selling the best possible product to you on sale day!

Calving Ease Direct (CED) - Expressed as the difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW) - Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an individual’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other individuals.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW) - Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an individual’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other individuals.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW) - Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an individual’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other individuals.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) - A predictor of individual’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability compared to other individuals. It is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Docility - is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

Scrotal - expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN) - expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW) - expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb) - Expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE) - Expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat) - Expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Weaned Calf Value ($W) - An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F) - an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and feed efficiency.

Beef Value ($B) - an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Once again, we are excited to offer a fancy set of commercial AI bred heifers at the sale. These heifers are the result of our Heifer Buyback Program and have been sorted for quality, docility, and fertility. They are deep bodied, broody females that will make superior mama cows. They are weighing between 1100-1150 pounds on sale day.

1. High Bidder will have the option of a 10 head minimum up to the entire pen. There will be a $500 freight break for semi load lots.

2. Heifers must be hauled out at the buyer’s expense within 5 days of the sale. We would be happy to help with trucking arrangements.

3. All heifers have received Vista 3 VL5 SQ breeding shot, and Safeguard Oral suspension

There will be 100 AI bred F1 cross baldy heifers due March 25th comprised from the prominent herds of the Boltz family, Dave, Tom and Sam Juntunen, and Lynn Weishaar.

There will also be 100 head of straight black AI bred heifers due March 25th. These heifers are from the heart of the Richard Angus Ranch commercial herd as well as the reputable herds of Dennis Price and Lynn Weishaar.

We are excited to offer something special at the sale this year. We will be offering 200 3 year old females. There will be 150 solid black and 50 F1 baldy cross. These fancy sets of experienced females are due to start calving April 10. They are ultrasounded safe with calf out of high quality Richard Angus Ranch bulls. They have proven themselves to be excellent mothers weaning off a great calf crop this year.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. $W assumes that producers retain 20% of their female progeny for replacements and sell the rest of their cull female and male progeny as feeder calves. Over time, increased selection pressure on $W will increase weaning and maternal milk traits while also continuing to increase mature cow size.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), an index expressed in dollars per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in future daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing $EN savings differences include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade.

Grid Value ($G), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B represents the expected average differences in the progeny post-weaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.
