AS South Fremantle fights to wrestle back its hold as league ladder-leader this weekend, the club will pay homage to its indigenous origins, from the 1970s through to the next generation of player. This weekend the WAFL will host NAIDOC Round, in celebration of NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee). NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July and the WAFL has a rich history of observing the significance of the celebration. Most clubs will wear specially-designed NAIDOC jumpers. Many of Western Australia’s most famous indigenous football names have worn the white jumper with the red V – and some of those family names are still represented by the 11 who are on the Bulldogs list of 2016. The families of the Bulldogs’ 11 indigenous players - Tim Kelly, Steven Edwards, Jacob Martinez, Marlion Pickett, Tyson Pickett, Jordan Matera, Bailey Matera, Josh Collard, Kendall Mow, Jalen Oakley and Dominic Warrell - have all been invited to this week’s NAIDOC Round game against Subiaco. At the President’s function the Bulldogs will welcome past indigenous greats on stage and speak with some of their indigenous colts players. Aboriginal elder Richard Wally will be among the special guests and he will perform with a digeridoo, while the respected Neville Collard will do the Welcome to Country on ground before the league game. The Bulldogs and reigning premiers Subiaco have been exchanging their stranglehold at the top of the ladder since Round 2, with the Bulldogs surrendering top spot after last week’s loss to East Perth. The Bulldogs dropped to second on the ladder, but have played

one fewer game than the Lions. The league trendsetters meet in Round 18 on a Thursday night at Medibank Stadium having both had a bye the previous weekend.

While the addition of key forwards Mason Shaw and Blaine Johnson and the return from injury of 2014 Bernie Naylor medallist Ben Saunders has aided South Fremantle’s resurgence after a disappointing 2015, it’s the likes of midfielder Kelly, small forward Edwards and Jacob Martinez who have stepped up and made the most of their opportunities this year.

Kelly made his State team debut in WA’s win over Tasmania and speaking on the club’s website recently he has a pretty simple philosophy when it comes to improving his game.

“See ball, get ball,” he said when asked about the improved consistency in his game and his growing ability to break games open.

We’re very much player-driven this year and the

leaders have really taken on the role of leading by example for the younger

players.” Todd Curley

Coach Todd Curley said consistency and the growth of the players as a group has led them to become one of the hunted teams. However, he said sitting at the top of the ladder isn’t their priority – making sure they win enough games to play finals is. “Our broad goal has been to win 12 games as quickly as we can so we guarantee ourselves to play finals,” Curley said. “A fair bit of work has gone into improving our depth over the last 18 months and we have made a concerted effort to bring younger players on through the reserves.

“That way we can fast track development and when we face a time like this, when we have some of our most decorated players out, we can give the younger guys experience and know they won’t be out of their depth. “We don’t want to rely on four or five players every week, and most games this year we’ve had a really even performance from the whole group. “We’re very much player-driven this year and the leaders have really taken on the role of leading by example for the younger players.” The Bulldogs will be hoping to get back some of their best in the coming weeks as they try to cement a top two place. Ashton Hams has missed the last two weeks and is close to a recall, while Haiden Schloithe will be a welcome inclusion. He hasn’t played since Round 12 with a foot injury but ishopeful of returning in Round 18. Curley also spoke fondly of the flair and

excitement indigenous players have and continue to bring to our great game. “South Fremantle has always had a great relationship and respect for indigenous players and I remember growing up and watching guys like Maurice Rioli, Stephen Michael and Benny Vigona,” Curley said. “The guys we have at the club now are great and we are all one group. Players like Marlion Pickett have really grown as people and while there’s nothing formal in terms of leadership, he brings a lot to the playing group.”

About NAIDOC Week 2016 The nationally-recognised NAIDOC Week festivities honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. The 2016 NAIDOC Week theme is Songlines –The living narrative of our nation. Songlines are the oldest living narrative of our nation and will highlight the importance of Songlines to the existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Dreamtime describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings. They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures. Dreaming tracks are sometimes called ‘Songlines’

which record the travels of these ancestral spirits who ‘sung’ the land into life. The National NAIDOC Committee encourages all Australians to explore and celebrate how, through Songlines, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people remain connected to Country and have been able to maintain and share sacred stories and ceremonies for tens of thousands of years. National NAIDOC Committee co-chairs Anne Martin and Ben Mitchell said the theme is one which will showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people histories and deep spiritual connection to the land. “Through learning more about Songlines, all Australians can celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as the oldest continuing cultures on the planet,” Ms Martin said. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people used Songlines to navigate vast distances and map oceans, waterholes, rivers, birds, animals, plants and hunting grounds.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Collectables that cross into both the WAFL and wine areas haven’t proven to be too popular over the past few years. Most of these items are commemorative bottles of port that were produced to celebrate some an event – a premiership, a Sandover Medal or a club reunion, for instance. The most common are the Hardy’s series of premiership ports that started in 1980 and ran through until 1986. They come up for sale often and rarely fetch more than $10-$15, despite being marketed as “collectable” at the time. More interesting, though, are the boot-shaped bottles that were produced in 1982 by Victorian winery Chateau Glen Cellars. These came in club colours and do fetch a little bit of money these days. Anywhere from $60-$120, if in good nick. Ian, from Capel, has that well and truly beaten, having discovered a painting that advertised the famous Penfolds brand and would have to be worth a minimum of $200. For those of you who, like me, are not wine connoissuers, Penfolds is probably Australia’s most iconic wine brand, having opened in South Australia’s Barossa Valley in 1844. But being Croweaters didn’t stop them from moving into the WA market and Ian’s painting, discovered in a deceased estate, is proof of that. Ian said he believed it had hung in a Wheatbelt hotel for many years before finding a home in the previous owner’s collection. The painting itself is on Masonite and measures about 120cm x 60cm. The paint exhibits a phenomenon known as “crazing”, whereby it has cracked into hundreds of small pieces. It’s a beautiful piece and one any WAFL collector, or certainly Subiaco and West Perth supporters, would love to own. Ian wanted to know the age of the piece, but it’s a bit difficult to tell. To me, the style appears to be typical of the 1950s. The scene itself contains some clues. West Perth has worn the red jumper with blue sash since 1947, so we can narrow the search to post-1946. In the post-1946 era, Subiaco has worn a jumper with a large, central SFC monogram from 1948-1952, 1955-1963 and 1968-1974. I would be pretty certain it dates to before 1968. So, we can reduce the era from 1948-1963. Perhaps the key lies in the “gold V” on the neck. Subiaco has never worn a “V”, but the Maroons did wear a gold collar for just one season in 1952. If the “V” is an attempt to depict the collar, then we would have our answer. Either way, I’m extremely jealous of Ian’s find. I’ve never seen one before and I very much doubt there’s many more of them out there.

It’s taken a long time for some Kristaware WAFL cups to hit the market. I’ve watched the auctions closely for nearly a decade now, and had never seen one of these little plastic cups for sale until last week when seven of them were auctioned off by a seller based in Wyalkatchem. The cups date to the early 1970s and started their lives as generic white cups, but were then imprinted with WAFL club logos by a company called Cameo Press. Similar offerings were available in South Australia and Victoria at the time, obviously with the logos of clubs from those competitions. At the time, they cost just 20c each. Well, that was 20c well spent. At auction, the Subiaco, Perth, Claremont and East Fremantle cups fetched between $47 and $81 apiece. The West Perth and South Fremantle cups sold for around $100, while the East Perth cup went for a touch over $150. So, if anyone has a set of these, you might want to consider moving them on now. To get some idea as to how far the price is likely to fall, we can take a look at the prices offered by the third-placed bidders. Once you eliminate the top bidders (they won the item last time around and are unlikely to bid again), the second-placed bidders

would win each of the auctions and have to pay a price slightly higher than the third-placed bidder was willing to offer. On this basis, the seven cups (Swans was not offered for sale) would only sell for a total of around $350 next time around and substantially less again if offered a third-time around. I don’t tend to mention too many “for sale” items in this column, but I was recently contacted by well-known West Perth supporter Jessy, who wants to sell off her signed 2013 WAFL state team jumper. So, I said I would help. The jumper is signed by Aaron Black, Jay Van Berlo and Andrew Strijk. It has been framed and glazed and is for sale for $350. Framing costs a minimum of $200, so I’m sure it will find a good home on another Falcons supporter’s wall. If you are interested, shoot me an email and I’ll put you in touch with Jessy.

SOUTH FREMANTLE v CLAREMONTA couple of hiccups over the past four matches has put the heat back on South Fremantle to prove it is premiership material. Injuries have hurt the Bulldogs but Shaun Bewick has picked up some of the slack and with big men Mason Shaw and Brock Higgins strong in attack and in the ruck, Todd Curley’s men have the talent to trouble Claremont. Shaw’s nine marks and five goals in a losing effort last week was highly commendable. A four-point defeat, yet another tight loss for Claremont, would have put a sting in the Tigers’ tails. Remarkably they have a percentage of 105 points yet are not out of danger of gaining this season’s wooden spoon.

SWAN DISTRICTS v EAST PERTHThe 2016 campaign has been hard work for Swan Districts coach Greg Harding and his match comittee. Harding hasn’t got the talent of other WAFL clubs but has worked diligently to bond Swan Districts into a unit that has been competitive. Matt Riggio and Adam Faulkner have worked hard in midfield and the return of Todd Banfield has given the black-and-whites some life. However, the Royals have found another gear in recent weeks. Craig Wulff is back following a serious leg injury and the sixth-placed East Perth have targeted a spot in the finals. A win over league leader South Fremantle last week underlined that determination.

Peel thunder

v West Perth

Previews

» Ben Hancock (PT)

The alignment is putting Peel out of whack. The relationship between the Thunder and AFL club Fremantle was always going to be tricky to manage and it has provided coach Cam Shepherd with a few headaches during the mid-point of the season. A drain of players has gone as far to put Peel’s finals bid in jeopardy. Last round showed depth is still the issue for the Thunder. Without a host of Dockers players, then injuries to Clancee Pearce and Josh Bootsma, the Mandurah-based club lacked the firepower to go with likely wooden spoon earner Swan Districts. If it wasn’t for the tireless efforts of midfielder Rory O’Brien the situation could be far worse. Another loss to West Perth will put Peel on the cusp of falling from the top five where it has sat for much of 2016. Haydn Matthews and Alex Bray got their chance to experience league ranks in the previous round and the Thunder need the pair to go through a fast graduation course to re-install strength to the team. Josh Deluca and Gerald Ugle stand out as the Peel leaders who need to garner the enthusiasm of the younger Thunder players into an on-field force. Local product Ben Hancock has notched 32 matches under his belt and is becoming a solid team marshal. The Falcons are flying high, even recovering from a slip-up to South Fremantle last month, to launch their assault on a top-two spot in the finals. Michael Lourey’s five-goal haul in the win over East Fremantle last round signals a problem for the Peel defence to counter. Gingin product Ben King and Mark Hamilton have also emerged in recent weeks as important contributors to the Falcons’ cause.

PERTH v SUBIACOThe previous clash between the teams resulted in a 50-point win for Subiaco. It was expected given the gap between the teams on the premiership ladder. However, the Lathlain Park crowd can expect a far tighter contest following Perth’s mid-season resurrection. With Brennan Stack, Brent Latch, Cody Leggett firing and Aidan Tropiano finding more of the ball, the Demons have string together consecutive wins; even claiming three of their past four encounters. But the Lions have so much talent from which to choose. William Fetherstonehaugh, Chris Bryan and Braden Fimmano have increased that depth with strong displays over the middle part of the season.

The DEPPRO WA State 16s recorded an impressive 43-point win over Victoria Country at Metricon Stadium in Round 2 of the AFL National 16s Championships on Monday, July 4. Led by a dominant game from captain Rylie Morgan which included 34 disposals, 8 clearances and seven inside 50s, WA outscored Vic Metro five goals to two in the first quarter and extended their lead each quarter to win 13.16 (94) to 7.9 (51). Livewire forwards Ian Hill and Sydney Stack led the way on the scoreboard with seven goals between them, while ruckman Xavier Peacock had 21 hit-outs to give WA first use of the ball. Coach John Hancock said Louis Miller was also outstanding in defence and Jason Carter provide great outside run with a consistent effort across four quarters. “Overall it was a terrific team effort. Our ability to run hard all day and outnumber them at the loose ball was outstanding,” Hancock said. “Vic Country had a very powerful performance against Vic Metro and they out-did us for size but the longer the game went on, to the credit of our backs, they changed their line-up and went smaller in the forward line as we took away their influence. “Our defenders were resolute, our inside mids were relentless and we won a lot of contested ball then caused them grief with our outside run. There was great balance in all of these areas. “Captain Rylie Morgan was a sensational leader throughout the game and his work ethic was a benchmark. Hill and Stack were very sharp and lively with their vision and goal

sense and kicked a couple of very clever goals. “Peacock did a tremendous job in the ruck and Miller was very good down back. His ability to beat an opponent and then use the ball on the way out was excellent. “Carter was also very dynamic with his run and put in a great performance for the whole game.” WA now shifts its focus to playing Victoria Metro at 8am WA time on Friday, July 8 at Southport. Hancock said the professional preparation of the players and the way they had embraced recovery fundamentals would put them in a

Deppro WA State 18s ruckman Tim English and midfielder Zac Fisher were named All-Australians at the conclusion of the AFL National 18s Championships last week. Fisher, from Perth Football Club, also won WA’s MVP award after starring in the midfield with his pace, skill and ability to push forward and finish in front of goal. English, from South Fremantle, showcased his talent in the ruck for WA and great mobility around the ground, where he used his athleticism to make a great impact on contests and take some strong overhead marks.

The All-Australian selection panel consisted of the AFL’s Kevin Sheehan, Brenton Sanderson and Michael Ablett, as well as club recruiting managers Steve Conole (Brisbane Lions), Merv Keane (Essendon), David Walls (Fremantle) and Simon DalrZac Fishertern Bulldogs).

Finals race heats upWith just six games left in the 2016 home-and-away season, the A Grade competition is heating up as the race towards the finals begins. University and Trinity Aquinas have pretty much secured themselves a place in this year’s finals series with University sitting on 11 wins and one loss for the season, while Trinity Aquinas sits on 10 wins, one loss and one draw. The two top sides were sitting in the same position this time last year however University were on 10 wins and two losses while Trinity Aquinas were on nine wins and two losses. Trinity Aquinas went on to finish as minor premiers in 2015 and with games against Kelmscott, Hamersley Carine and Kalamunda to follow in the coming weeks they may just be able to finish on top again.

Despite sitting in second position they have a better percentage than their top-of-the-ladder rivals. Their biggest challenge comes in Round 17 when Trinity Aquinas and University face off just a week before the final round. The match could be a preview of this year’s grand final. Trinity Aquinas took the chocolates when they met in Round 8 but this time around it will be a case of who plays better after the bye. But although both teams have been on top of the ladder for most of the season, Scarborough may just be the team to challenge both of them. Scarborough sits two games away in third position with their only losses being against three sides in the top five. A draw in Round 6 to Trinity Aquinas left the competition worried about its newest opponents and what they might be able to achieve. Slightly further down the ladder but still in finals contention is North Beach and Fremantle CBC. North Beach have had a fairly consistent season fluctuating between fourth and fifth for majority of the year. Fremantle CBC however had a slow start to the season but have bounced back winning five out of their last six matches including wins over Trinity Aquinas and Scarborough. Both North Beach and Fremantle CBC sit on six wins and six losses but with Fremantle CBC taking the win over North Beach by 11 points last weekend it seems that Fremantle CBC may just claw their way into the finals. Down in the second half of the ladder West Coast are just one game behind Fremantle CBC and North Beach. With four games against lower sides still to come West Coast could also be the surprise as they fight for a finals spot. Last year’s grand finalists Curtin Uni Wesley, Kalamunda and Kelmscott all sit on four wins and eight losses. The battle begins for big wins to keep themselves out of relegation position. Kalamunda have had a late season comeback with three wins in the past three weeks, including a win over Fremantle CBC and Curtin Uni Welsey. Kalamunda are just out of relegation position by percentage but with Trinity Aquinas and Scarborough still to come it’s going to be a tough end to the season. With just one win for the season and three games against top five sides still to come, it could be back to B Grade for Hamersley Carine. It’s been a tough year for last year’s come-from-behind premiership winners as they went from fifth place on the ladder to a one-point win in the B Grade grand final. However, if they win a substantial amount of games in the coming weeks anything is possible.

Can You Help?Since the beginning of the 1960 WAFL season there have been 5192 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. Research continues on the WAFL player database which is missing a date of birth for only 24 of these players. A club of origin and birth place is not recorded for a further 198 players. The Budget will list the playing records of up to eight players for whom information is sought. These include:

Roger Clement (Roly) BOTT (Perth 1965, 3 games) Andrew Ian BOWNES (Claremont 1979, 1 game) George CAMPBELL (East Perth 1964, 3 games) Kerry Shane McCARTHy (East Perth 1967-1968, 4 games) Rodney Stephen McPHEE (Perth 1981, 1 game) Lloyd Andrew PAGE (Subiaco 1974-1976, 38 games) Warren George TURNBULL (South Fremantle 1968, 6 games) Robert John WEBB (Swan Districts 1967-1971, 28 games)

Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (via e mail [email protected] or message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
