Social Networking and Mobile Social

Networking is the next big thing

66% of the global1 Internet population

visit social network or blogging sites,

with twice the growth of any of the

other five most popular sectors. Source:

Nielsen, 2009

“Mobile is a natural fit for social networks,

as consumers are used to connecting with

friends via mobile calls and text. Using the

phone to access social networks doesn’t

require much change in consumer mindset.”

source: Nielsen, 2009

Social Networking (SN) lends itself to mobile, due to its

always-on nature and the opportunity to include

location services. “Which type of content is key? Social

networking, with communications like IM and email, is the

arrowhead of fixed-mobile convergence. Communication -

in touch with friends and family - is the central piece”,

comments one major operator. Source: Strategy Analytics,

2009.

Infonetics projects „RCS subscribers to hit

1.3 million in 2010 led by Western Europe“

Source: Infonetics Research, May 2009

• RCS subscriber growth is expected

to ramp quickly across Europe and

Asia, and spread to North America

and Central/Latin America by 2013

as RCS becomes more widely

available on 3G devices

• The network address book will play

a pivotal role in the success of RCS

• Future capabilities such as auto-

populating from diverse sources

(LinkedIn, Facebook, MS Outlook,

etc.) will enable increased

communications across multiple

media

By 2013, primarily in Western Europe

• there will be 94,5M RCS subscribers

• RCS service revenue will reach $4,2B

• the market for RCS handsets will be worth $3,6B

Why RCS: unifying fragmented identities, services & clients

With RCS

• Unified clients

• One identity & one number

• Multiple devices with same handling

• Centralized data management

• Presence and capability indication

• Guided communication

• Inter-operator support

Today

• Multiple clients and services

• Multiple identities & numbers

• Limited amount of devices

• Where is my “real data and content”

• Communication in trial & error mode

• Services hidden within complex menues

• Operator specific

Rich Communication Suite

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

• Rich Communication Suite (RCS) is an industry effort focused on the use of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) for providing mobile phone communication services. "Rich Communication" in itself is meaningless jargon, which refers to the use of more than just voice for communication, but has long been touted as a benefit of IMS. It is to be noted that much of the capability of RCS is already available from Internet service providers.

• from the end-user point of view RCS would enable communication such as instant messaging, video sharing and buddy lists. These capabilities would be available on any type of devices using an open communication between devices and networks. Main features of RCS are:

– Enhanced Phonebook, with service capabilities and presence enhanced contacts information

– Enhanced Messaging, which enables a large variety of messaging options including chat and messaging history

– Enriched Call, which enables multimedia content sharing during a voice call. For many years Nokia and Ericsson have been pushing a "see what I see" capability, but this has failed to be taken up by operators, or the way it was deployed failed to result in great take-up by consumers.

• Wider and large scale IMS deployment, Interoperability between different terminal vendor RCS clients and RCS service interworking between operators are the key aims of RCS Initiative.

Page 15: Rich Communication Suite (RCS)

What operators say about RCS…

•"Enriching the user experience of mass-market communication services

carries great importance for TeliaSonera. We believe that RCS will

become as successful and ubiquitous as mobile voice and short

messaging services are today. Cooperation with other forerunner

operators and leading vendors is very important to ensure interoperability

and high-quality customer experience." *

Claes Nycander, Vice President of Common Development, TeliaSonera Mobility Services * GSMA press release “GSMA to take Rich Communication Suite forewards”15 September 2008

•"The Rich Communication Suite Initiative is key to develop an enriched

communication experience beyond voice for all customers whatever the

devices they can use. RCS will foster interoperability between operators and

vendors, which will ensure the success of enriched communication services.

The integration of RCS Initiative in GSMA will promote a faster go-to-

market of enriched communication services and will ensure a large adoption

of these services across the operator community." *

* GSMA press release “GSMA to take Rich Communication Suite forewards”1 5 September 2008

RCS Devices and 3rd Party Clients

The Big 5 Terminal Vendors are supporting RCS

• Mobile RCS clients available such as fom Cicero Networks, Cesca, Ecrio, Genaker, Movial, and ohers…

• PC clients: eyeP Media, Movial

• Status:

– All RCS involved clients tested/verified (with different level of quality) against infrastructure vendors RCS solution

– Mobile client supporting Apple iPhone platform on it´s way.

• RCS reuses the capabilities of 3GPP specified IMS(IP Multimedia Subsystem) core system as the underlying service platform taking care of issues such as authentication, authorization, registration, charging and routing

Page 17: Rich Communication Suite (RCS)

• Enhanced Phonebook, with

presence information and service

capability. Communication can be

initiated by selecting one of the

available communication types.

Presence information is used to

communicate also personalized

contact features including photo,

availability and free text

• Enhanced Messaging, enabling a

large variety of messaging options

(SMS, MMS, instant messaging) and

buddy related communication

history

• Enriched Call, enabling multimedia

content sharing during a voice call

(e.g. video share, image share and

file transfer)

Presence service plays a key role: it discovers the actual rich communication

capabilities and becomes a key enabler to increase the usage of new services
