This week I want to high-light a special and amaz-ing transformation that

has taken place over the course oftwo years. The transformation I am refer-ring to is that of my wife's PattyGarcia. Through hard work, consistenteffort, extreme focus, proper nu-trition, and sacrifice Patty has beenable to transform her mind andbody. In addition, Patty is setting agreat example for our two daugh-ters Makayla and Mila who followtheir mom and join her homeworkouts. A healthy lifestyle is now part ofPatty's life on a consistent basis;it's the lifestyle she decided tomake for the sake of her health, fu-ture, and family. As she continues to set new goalsand reach new levels in strength, endurance, and abilities; Patty hasdiscovered a passion for helpingother women who share the sameor similar story as hers and realizethe ability they have to transformtheir mind and body as well. As a wife and stay at home momwho struggled with various weightissues throughout her life, Pattyfeels she can help other womenovercome their challenges by shar-ing what she did in order to trans-form her mind and body. She recently became a certified

PiYo Live instructor and nowteaches fitness classes at the VIBEFitness personal training studio. You can connect with Patty onFacebook at her fan page bysearching “PiYo Patty.”

through hard work, consistency and proper nutrition, patty Gar-cia has transformed herself into a strong ‘Fit mom.’

But mobile dairy manager,Efrain Valenzuela, assured thechildren there was nothing grossabout the fresh milk.“You guys like ice cream,” heasked. “Yes,” the children answered. “Well who do you think makesit,” he said pointing back to But-tercup.The Mobile Dairy Classroom isan aim to teach students how milkand dairy foods are produced andhow they contribute to healthyeating. Anatomy of the cow, agri-cultural technology and the differ-ent foods made from milk were

also explained.“It’s literally, from farm totable,” Valenzuela said. And to offer children a more-hands approach in addition to aglimpse of the different cowbreeds, Valenzuela brought alongOreo, a three-month-old 300-pound Holstein calf. Students were able to pet Oreo atthe end of the assembly. Buttercup, watching the assem-bly line petting, responded with“moo.”To learn more about the MobileDairy Classroom and the DairyCouncil of California, visitwww.healthyeating.org/.

I’m writing to inform and warnpeople in the Inland Empire aboutsome huge housing projects nowbeing developed in the newly an-nexed area of East Highland thatwill encompass thousands of acresand could eventually bring in tensof thousands of new residents. Thereason that this is a concern is be-cause although the project is oc-curring in the city of Highland, itwill progressively have a burdenupon all of the towns in the area, including Yucaipa, Mentone, Red-lands, San Bernardino, and others. This development will have a neg-ative impact upon our limited andthreatened water supply, which isevident now because we have beenin a severe drought for severalyears and there is mandatory waterrestriction for everyone. The ElNiño rain that we were hoping andpraying for did not happen, andnow weather officials are sayingthat a La Niña is replacing El Niñoand it usually results in four yearsof drought.

But even if we do miraculouslyget a bunch of rain and break outof the drought, a more seriousproblem with traffic gridlock hasoccurred from widespread over-

development of our area. Themajor roads going to the freewayare now jamming with trafficgoing both to and from work.Once on the freeway the trafficflow is even worse and the carsmove even slower than the roads. Moreover, the 10 freeway is nowfully expanded and cannot bewidened any further to accommo-date any further influx of morecars and trucks, and the 210 free-way is jammed with traffic and isyears away from full expansion, which will be futile anyway withmassive new development. Be-sides all of the new housing devel-opment in the Inland Empire, all ofthe industrial property near thefreeway has recently been devel-oped with gigantic warehouses. These warehouses are dumpingfreight trucks onto the freeway andfurther congesting traffic. Evenwhen I go to work at 5:30 in themorning the freeways are alreadycrowded with cars and trucks. Andcoming home at 6:00 pm the traf-fic is much slower and congestedon the 10 freeway.

Enough is enough! Our roads andfreeways cannot accommodateany further big residential and in-

dustrial development, and ourwater supply is already restrictedand it may be years before we getreplenished with enough rain. Of-ficials in every city must be infat-uated with development becauseour cities are growing exponen-tially and so is our road traffic andother problems.

Fortunately for the residents ofHighland, a city council election iscoming in November and there isan opportunity to replace incum-bents with some new city councilmembers who could serve as“slow-growth” or “no growth”representatives. Perhaps then wecan stop the insanity of uncheckedover-development and keeps theroads from becoming completelygridlocked and also seriously con-serve our limited water supply.

Thank you for sharing mythoughts and concerns about thisissue with others.

Sincerely,

Michael HahnHighland, CA

Slow growth, please!

A Special Thanks to an UnknownWoman

On March 30, 2016, nine gentle-men from the W6VAH amateurradio club and American LegionPost 106 met for lunch at Apple-bee’s on Redlands Blvd. Whilethere is nothing particularly spe-cial about a group gathering forlunch, what took place March 30is the kind of thing that restoresfaith in humanity and trulytouched the hearts of our group.Members of the W6VAH cluband American Legion Post 106are proud of their country andproud of their past. As veteransserving in the Korean and VietNam wars these men are closefriends who make it a point tocontinue serving their country andsupporting fellow veteransthrough the actions of their dailylives. Every Monday-Friday theymeet to conduct an amateur radio

“net” reaching out to operatorsaround the world; often timescommunicating with other veter-ans. Every Wednesday followingtheir net they meet at a differentlocation for lunch. This past Wednesday as theydined at Applebee’s they receivedan incredible and very unexpectedsurprise when the waitress in-formed them that an anonymouswoman had paid their entirecheck! Rather than bringing a billto be paid, the waitress broughtthe paid slip to the table with ahand written note that read,“Thank you for your service!Have a blessed day!” Bert, TheLast U.S. Navy Bugler, is stillreeling from this awesome act ofkindness, and another member hasnot stopped sharing how touchedhe is by this random act of kind-

ness.Other than the hats they wearrepresenting the branches of mili-tary served, there is nothing ofnote drawing attention to thisgroup. We certainly never ex-pected anything like this to hap-pen and it has never happenedbefore, but wow, this touches ourhearts and we need to say thanks!Neither the waitress or restaurantmanager have seen the mysterywoman, perhaps in her mid 20’s,before. You know who you areand we hope you see this so youwill know how incredibly gratefulwe are for your generosity andthoughts!

Our sincere thanks to you!

By now many in thegreater Inland Empirehave learned of the

tragic death of 12-year-oldColton sixth-grader DominickGallegos. In fact, the suddenpassing of the youngster on theplayground April 12 at Ulysses S.Grant Elementary School has theentire country and people worldover taking notice. Yet it is us here in the localcommunity who feel the griefacutely along with the Gallegosfamily. So many kids went toschool with Dominick. Likewise, many of these kids’ parents knewDominick, even if it was just fora short time as when Dominickand other students played onneighborhood lawns and streets, for instance. For a brief time, I, too, was ableto get to know of Dominick inti-mately. Sitting as a welcomedguest in the home of his parentsCharmaine and Joel last week, Iwas told humorous and light-hearted tales of a boy, who, by allaccounts, was full of smiles andjoy wherever he went. That con-versation with his parentstouched me to the core.I am just a young reporter andin my training I have always beentold to try to keep myself out ofthe story—that I should strive notto get too emotionally attached tothe people I am covering. In thatsense, I can understand why as itallows us as reporters to stay asobjective and fair as feasibly pos-sible in our coverage of news.Yet, sitting there I could feel the

gut-wrenching pain Charmaineand Joel were feeling. I could see itin their eyes and sense the im-mense love and pride they had fortheir only son. As a person whohas no children as of yet, I cannottruly have any idea of how the par-ents feel. It is never right in such atime to say to a grieving personthat we know how they are feeling, even as well-meaning as the inten-tion is.To see the barely restrained tearsand the accompanying pain andsorrow I know the Gallegos’ arefeeling, gave me immense pauseand sadness for their plight. If Icould be permissive and even at-tempt to compare their grief andsorrow to my own pain of losingmy younger brother, for exampleyears ago—then, in that sense, Iknow of their grief. No matter how much I could tryto remove myself from such in-tense feelings, despite the besttraining, it is not possible, for weare all human. To see and feelthose two parents pain sitting atthat dining room table touched meimmensely. I truly feel for Mr. andMrs. Gallegos over the loss of theirson—even if I cannot say that Ihave been exactly in their shoes. And by extension, Dominick wasColton’s son too—how many of usin the community feel unqualifiedgrief for the sudden and tragic lossof such a beautiful child? This week, as the family preparesits solemn goodbye to a preciousbrother, son, cousin, nephew, andgrandchild, please let me say thatwe join you—the Gallegos—inyour grief. In our own ways, evenif different and unique in our ownexperiences, we too feel your sad-ness, anguish, and sorrow.I thank you Charmaine and Joelfor allowing me into your homeand sharing with me—and thegreater community, by exten-sion—the story of your boy’sshort, but very rich, life on thisearth.Let us all wish you and your fam-ily comfort in this time of im-measurable grief. Even as any ofus try to make sense of thistragedy, let us pray that God’scomfort engulfs you in your timeof sorrow.I am just a young reporter—andwhat do I know? However, I can-not say, that while sitting with you--Charmaine and Joel--for a fewminutes, that I could sit there de-tached from the conversation. How could I not feel grief withyou during that hour we spent inyour home? Far from it!May you, Dominick Gallegos, rest in peace.

Words to Think About: The origin, themake-up and the outcome of the universe

By G. W. Abersold Ph.D.

Ihave an insatiable interest inthe origin, the make-up andthe outcome of the universe.

Since the work of Carl Sagan

and the discoveries of the Hubbelltelescope, a plethora of informa-tion regarding our universe has at-tracted the attention of scientistsand laymen alike.Owen Gingerich is one of the

latest authorities attempting to an-swer the questions describedabove. He is a believing Christianand an outstanding scientist. He is a historian of science, re-

tired from Harvard University. Heis also the senior astronomer withthe Smithsonian AstrophysicalObservatory.Gingerich’s recent book is,

“God’s Universe,” and thoughsmall in size-121 pages- is chuckfull of provocative information.Did you know, for example, that

there are more stars in the uni-verse than there are grains of sandon all of the beaches of Earth? However, take one human brain.

It has 100 billion neurons, eachconnected with 10,000 other neu-rons. There are not that manystars. All of this according to Gin-gerich.

As a believing Christian he rev-els in the connection of God withthe universe. The Psalmist says,“The heavens declare the glory ofGod and the firmament revealsHis handiwork.”Two great historical scientists

are essential to an understandingof Gingerich, Copernicus andEinstein. He quotes them often.Copernicus said, “So vast, with-out any question, is the DivineHandiwork of the Almighty Cre-ator!”He is convinced that science

supports the view that the uni-verse is very hospitable to the de-velopment of intelligent life. Hequotes Einstein when he said, “themost beautiful experience we canhave is the mysterious. Whoeverdoes not know it and can nolonger wonder, no longer marvel,is as good as dead.”There are several prized tenets

espoused by Gingerich. He af-firms “the universe seems so con-genially designed for theexistence of intelligent, self-re-

flective life.”Quoting Freeman Dyson, “this is

a universe that knew we werecoming.”Back of all this is his affirmation

of a final cause, a Creator-God.Gingerich is also an advocate

that life exists on other planets. He affirms that a hundred billiongalaxies exist beyond the MilkyWay.Thus he says: “How dare we

think we are so special, so privi-leged, that intelligent life wouldnot arise aplenty and every-where.”Remember. He is a world –

renowned astronomer and be-lieves that communication withaliens is a distinct possibility. Hesums up this view with the words,“The probability of success is dif-ficult to estimate, but if we neversearch, the chance of success iszero.”In 1969 the Allende meteorite

fell in Mexico and scientists dateit at 4.6 billion years old. Gin-gerich ties the universe into pur-

pose and direction with manbeing the ultimate objective. Theword he uses is teleology. It refers to design and purpose.

The universe came into being andis so constituted as to encouragethe existence of self-consciouslife. That is, you and me.Gingerich gives a most interest-

ing interpretation as to why theCreator-if He is all powerful-al-lows disease, war, etc. to exist.“This recognition suggests that insome fashion the powerful tran-scendence that brought the uni-verse into being, and whichsustains it, has self-imposed limi-tations.”He quotes the Psalmist who said

of man, “Thou hast made him alittle lower than the angels andhast crowned him with glory andhonor.”It is refreshing to hear and read

about an educated scientist whoaffirms a belief in God.Amen. Selah. So be it.

San Bernardino approves lease agreementwith Inland Empire Surf Soccer Club

By Harvey M. Kahn

The City of SanBernardino approved a10-year, $241,000 lease

agreement with the Inland Em-pire Surf Soccer Club for use ofthe Blast Soccer Complex lo-cated in the city-owned Al GuhinPark. The facility faces the I-10just below the Western RegionLittle League Headquarters. It isthe third consecutive, 10-yearagreement the city has enteredwith the surf soccer club.Although the agreement beganon March 1st, 2016 the firstyear's payment of $25,000 is notdue until June 30, 2017. Pay-ments decrease by $1,000 peryear through 2026. The agree-ment calls for the city to pay thewater bill on the 14-acre soccercomplex up to a specifiedamount. According to the agree-ment, the soccer club is allowedan unlimited amount of water in2017 and in 2018 it can use up to38,000 hundred cubic feet ofwater free of charge. It is not uncommon for a youthsoccer tournament lasting threedays to gross revenues that gowell into five figures. The three-day San Diego Surf SoccerlocoCup held in Del Mar is said togenerate more that $600,000 withanother $21 million spent in thelocal economy as a result of thetourney. The Inland Empire SurfSoccer Club is affiliated withteams in Utah, Hawaii, Orange,San Diego, and Riverside Coun-ties. It was once considered oneof 11 Nike Premier Clubs in thecountry. Alex Aldasora is listed on a citystaff report as the Inland EmpireSurf Soccer Club contact. Itspresident is Bryan Young. Thedirector of coaches is the renownCle Kooiman, a former profes-sional and member of the USAMen's team. City officials saidother soccer organizations wereinterested in the complex, but thecity could not provide the namesof any of those competitive bid-

ders. New city manager MarkScott did not return a call, neitherdid city spokesperson MonicaLagos. The Surf should be able to

cover the entire 10-year leaseamount of $241,00 in short time.In one of its Festival Tourna-ments, 197 teams paid $300 eachto enter. They gross additionalfunds through camps, academies, training courses, college events, donations and sponsorships. There are also registration feesthat range from $260-$420 perplayer annually, serving playersfrom U-19. Scholarships areavailable. The city's agreementgives the soccer club the exclu-sive rights for use, including thesales of alcohol. Upon city ap-proval, it can make capital im-provements and deduct it fromthe rent. The new agreementmandates the field to be pro-moted as the San Bernardino

Blast Soccer Complex.A search of the IRS website

could not locate an entity calledthe Inland Empire Surf SoccerClub, however its website lists itscopyright as Platinum FC. A taxstatement published by CharityNavigator says the Alliance FCof San Bernardino grossed$990,000 in 2014. Alliance FC isdoing business as the Inland Em-pire Surf Soccer Club. On somefinancial documents it still pro-motes the San Bernardino SoccerComplex as the Platinum SoccerPark.

The lease agreement was au-thorized by former City ManagerBill Manis just before he left of-fice. The city manger's office isto receive the annual paymentsthrough the city's parks, recre-ation and community servicesdepartment. Past lease agree-ments have been conductedthrough the mayor's office. Ac-

cording to a city budget reportdated March 21, expendituresand appropriations for the firstquarter have exceeded $1 millionfor the care of San Bernardinocity parks. Its agreement withsurf soccer states the club willprovide all maintenance. On itswebsite, the Surf states it allowsfree over night RV parking at thesoccer facility. Inland Empire Surf officials re-quire each of its many teams tooperate under an approvedbudget. The Inland Empire SurfSoccer Club business model ap-pears structured like a traditionalcorporation complete with merg-ers, contracts, and franchises. When reached for comment In-land Empire Surf Soccer ClubPresident Bryan Young explainedthe IE soccer franchise is part ofthe largest youth soccer organi-zation in the nation.

Young said IE Surf offers a

number of benefits to the city in-cluding providing a positive en-vironment for education andathletics. He said 35 of theirolder players are currently com-mitted to four-year colleges.Young said under the lease hisgroup can sub lease the six fieldsat the San Bernardino Blast Soc-cer Complex, however alcoholwould not be sold at youth tour-naments.Young said there are prelimi-

nary plans to host a nationalchampionship youth qualifiersoccer tournament in SanBernardino that could attractabout 200 teams and about50,000 people who could possi-bly generate between $8-$10million to the regional economy. He said it would require the si-multaneous use of the SanBernardino Soccer Complex justnorth of San Gorgonio HighSchool.
