THE PURRFECT CATWALK SHOT (also see www.rcwp.co.uk/purrfect2018)
Award-winning wildlife photographer Richard Costin set out to get the perfect catwalk shots – on safari. To achieve this, he knew he’d have to find a suitably graceful model and the perfect lighting – a pool of light against a brooding background. When a huge storm approached Kenya’s famous Masai Mara game reserve he took his chance. He drove straight towards it.

Richard is always seeking the perfect picture but as a wildlife photographer he often has to wait for the elements to combine. When storms hit The Mara (home to Big Cat Diary’s Marsh Pride), most safari teams made their way back to the safety of the camp. But Richard rushed in the opposite direction – to a fallen tree near Kenya’s Mara River that he knew was frequented by lions. As he waited for the storm to approach he also knew that it’d be a race against time to get back to camp once the rains hit.

Richard, who has run photography safaris in the area for over a decade, is committed to bringing wildlife to the world. Working with his friends and local guides, he gets to know the animals individually. He knows where they like to hunt, where they like to sleep and where they like to just hang out. This knowledge enables him to seek out the perfect shot when the opportunity arises, and he couldn’t have hoped to find a more laid-back subject than the young lion he captured in these unique images.

As the weather worsened, the lion moved off to find cover. And, although it was a close-run race against time to make it back to camp before the river became impassable, it was all worth it in the end. “Bad weather has made for some of my best photos,” said Richard, “and I’ve been waiting for these for 10 years. I was effectively trying to recreate studio shots in the wild so I needed to be in the right place at the right time. Fortunately, we knew this amazing lion and found him lounging in a tree as a storm grew behind him. A small pocket of sunlight broke through the clouds which gave us this incredible lighting and I immediately knew I was in with a chance of getting these shots. It was just a relief to see them through my viewfinder.”
