Special  Olympics:  Saturday,  May  21st  @  Roosevelt  High  School

This  year’s  team  was  made  up  of  students  from  not  only  Ramsey  Middle  School,  but  also  Green  Central  and  Washburn.  Cortez  and  Theo  (pictured)  each  brought  home  one  Silver  and  one  Gold  medal  a  piece.  Congratulations  to  Ms.  Di,  Ms.  Koch,  Ms.  Hokr,  and  all  the  students  that  represented  us  so  well!

Joseph  and  the  Amazing  Technicolor  Dreamcoat

Review  Of  The  Musical    BY:  Marley  Hinschberger

The  musical  this  year  was  Joseph  and  the  Amazing  Technicolored  Dreamcoat.  I  saw  it  two  times,  once  on  the  opening  night  and  once  at  the  all  school  performance.  In  my  opinion,  this  is  not  the  strongest  musical  that  Ramsey  has  put  on.  But  let's  start  on  the  positives  first.  The  set  looked  great.  They  reused  the  set  from  Seussical,  and  it  looked  better  than  that  one.  Secondly,  the  cast  was  great.  The  leads  were  strong  and  pieced  it  all  together.  The  music  was  strong  and  it  was  neat  for  the  most  part.  Now  for  some  negatives.  In  my  opinion  there  was  too  much  music,  there  was  never  any  talking  and  half  the  time  i  didn't  know  what  they  were  saying  so  they  also  could  have  worked  more  on  diction.  Some  of  the  dancers  forgot  their  props  or  we  could  see  them  from  the  audience  when  they  were  off  stage.  It  was  mostly  errors  that  were  laughable  but  made  the  musical  not  the  strongest.  I  would  also  like  to  compliment  the  choreography  and  the  leads.  I  would  rate  the  Musical  a  7.5/10  technical  errors  and  some  professionalism  made  it  worse,  but  overall  it  was  good.

JatATD:  Was  Casting  Fair?    BY:  Sierra  Krueger-‐Wolfe    I  asked  the  kids  in  the  musical  “What  part  they  play  and  if  they  thought  that  the  way  that  parts  were  assigned  was  fair?”  Here's  what  they  said:    -‐  “Well  I’m  a  Select  dancer,”  said  one  kid  just  as  another  student  said,  “But  you  should  be  more  than  that.”  “Yes  I  should,  I  should,  I  have  talent!  And  just  because  I  was  a  6th  grader,  just  a  6th  grader,  they  have  forgotten  about  me.  Its  VERY  unfair!”    -‐  “Well,  um,  I  play  [in]  the  choir,  well  a  guard  and  I'm  in  the  Choir.”  “And  so  do  I  and  we’re  pretty  good  at  it.”  “Yeah,  but  it’s  not  that  fun.”  “Well  do  you  think  it’s  fair?”  “Yes,  because  I’m  really  bad  at  this.”    -‐  “She’s  a  slav,.”  said  one  kid.  “Well  thank  you,  I  am  the  wife's  servant,  and  I  feel  like,  it's  not  really  fair  because  I  feel  like  they  gave  all  the  older  kids  the  better  and  bigger  parts  and  there  was  only  one  6th  grade  brother  there  so  I  feel  like  it  really  very  unfair.”          -‐  “Ok  so  I’m  part  of  the  Chorus,  and  I  personally  think  that  it  wasn't  fair  because  they  gave  like  6  main  roles  out  that  actually  have  like  singing  parts  that  are  like  together  and  stuff  and  single  parts  so  I  don't  think  that  that's  really  fair  and  there's  like  featured  roles  but  there  in  just  one  or  so  songs.  So  I  don't  think  that  it's  fair.”    “I'm  in  the  chorus,  and  i  guess  it's  fair  because  I'm  just  a  sixth  grader.”  “Well  do  you  think  that  it's  fair  that  most  6th  graders  got  bad  parts  or  select  dancer?”  We  asked  trying  to  get  more  out  of  her.  “I  guess.”

Washburn  Play  Review    BY:  Marley  Hinschberger

A  Midsummer  Night's  Dream  by  Shakespeare:  a  great  play,  many  films,  and  so  many  classes  read  it  every  year.  When  Ramsey  8th  graders  read  it,  it  was  obvious  that  we  should  see  it  at  Washburn.  Now,  we  only  saw  ⅔  of  the  play,  and  it  was  set  in  the  1960s.  I  personally  thought  the  play  was  very  well  put  together.  Some  might  not  agree  but  overall  it  was  good.

Recycling  at  Ramsey

BY:  Isabella  Freeland  Ramsey  Middle  School  has  a  problem.  As

you  may  notice,  when  you  go  class  that  there  is  normally  not  a  recycling  bin.  So  I  wanted  to  write  about  it  so  that  we  can  fix  this  problem.  Here  are  some  reasons  on  why  this  is  bad.     This  is  a  big  problem  because  it  doesn’t  help  the  environment  and  this  school  wants  to  have  a  good  reputation  and  this  really  doesn't  help  that  at  all.  And  we  are  killing  habitats  and  resources  that  animals  use  and  that  causes  a  lot  of  animals  to  go  endangered.  Go  to  http://www.endangeredspeciesinternational.org/plastickills.html  to  learn  more  about  it  effects  animals  and  nature.     Another  problem  is  even  though  we  might  have  recycling  bins  in  some  classes,  at  the  end  of  the  day  they  mix  the  garbage  and  recycling  together  because  there  is  too  much  trash  in  it.    Our  recycling  isn’t  working  at  all  so  those  recycling  bins  are  just  there  for  no  reason.  It’s  all  like  one  big  cycle.

The  Ramsey  Green  Team  is  working  on  the  recycling  issue  here  at  RMS.  We  hope  to  follow  this  story  next  year  to  see  is  and  how  things  change.  –  Ed.

A  Piece  of  History  BY:  Mr.  K.     Ramsey  Middle  School  has  had  a  long  an  interesting  history.  Here  is  one  small  part  of  it.     Ramsey  Middle  School  opened  in  1932  and  was  originally  called  Ramsey  Junior  High.  The  school  held  grades  7,  8,  and  9,  and  it  was  a  “feeder  school”  to  Washburn  Senior  High.  As  the  years  went  on  and  Minneapolis  grew,  grades  7  and  8  were  taken  out  of  Ramsey,  leaving  it  to  be  a  9th  grade  only  school.  This  changed  in  1978  with  the  closing  of  nearby  Bryant  Junior  High  (currently  Sabathani  Community  Center  at  38th  and  Clinton).  With  the  closing  of  that  program,  Bryant’s  7th  and  8th  grade  were  moved  to  Ramsey,  making  the  school  a  7th  -‐9th  grade  school  once  more.     So  what,  right?     Along  with  the  Bryant  Junior  High  students  came  a  bunch  of  old  documents,  school  newspapers,  and  yearbooks  from  Bryant  High  School.  As  I  was  going  through  these  materials,  I  came  across  a  couple  old  yearbooks  with  a  very  familiar  and  famous  face  looking  back  at  me.  Below  are  those  photos.       I  present  to  you:  Prince  Nelson  as  few  have  seen  him  before.  The  first  photo  is  his  7th  grade  yearbook  picture;  second  is  his  8th  grade  yearbook  picture,  and  the  third  is  a  picture  of  the  Bryant  Basketball  team,  of  which  he  was  a  member.
