Although she still has some restrictions on her activities she is well and very happy to meet up with her growing team of over 30 mentors and trainers. The Wales IY team, Sue, Bridget and Judy were joined by colleagues from across the globe including for the first time trainee mentors from Russia and Denmark. Jane was presented with a copy of the Welsh translation of the IY book and was happy to announce continued funding to support the delivery of the IY programmes across Wales. The team presented papers on their most recent findings (as described in their articles in the newsletter). We were delighted to have both Dr Helen Henningham from Jamaica and Margaret Maher from Archways, Dublin speaking at the conference. We are delighted that Jane has agreed to open our 2009 Conference in Cardiff. Jane Hutt AM is presented with the Welsh Incredible Years Book. Supporting foster carers with the IY Parent Programme Dr. Tracey Bywater

There are over 4,000 looked after children inWales who often have a difficult start in life,move from foster carer to foster carer and are

high users of health, social care and educationalservices. The UK government has recognised a need to improvetraining for foster carers to support the health, wellbeing andeducational attainment of these children. Evidence has shown thesechildren to have significantly more behavioural problems than otherchildren with over 37% having a diagnosis of conduct disorder.

nesaf ac yn gwneud defnydd helaeth o wasanaethauiechyd, gofal cymdeithasol ac addysgol. Mae llywodraeth y DU wedi canfodbod angen gwella hyfforddiant ar gyfer gofalwyr maeth er mwyn cefnogiiechyd, lles a chyrhaeddiad addysgol y plant hyn. Dengys tystiolaeth bodgan y plant hyn gryn dipyn yn fwy o broblemau ymddygiad na phlant eraill,gyda dros 37% yn cael eu dehongli ag anhwylder ymddygiad.

The IY Parent Programme iseffective in supporting and helpingparents with children in conventionalfamily circumstances with conductdisorder or challenging behaviour andover the years staff in the North WestWales NHS Trust Child andAdolescent Mental Health Servicehave worked with many foster carersof referred children who have foundthe programme helpful for themselvesand their cared for children. LocalAuthorities (Gwynedd, Anglesey andConwy) have offered the IYprogramme to foster carers and againcarers have reported it to be useful.However, until the present study theIY programme had not been formallyevaluated with foster carers.

The study was a twelve-monthcollaborative Bangor project betweenIMSCaR and Psychology to establishthe usefulness of the IY programme tofoster carers and their looked afterchildren. It was funded by the WalesOffice of Research in Health andSocial Care (WORD). It wasanticipated that problematicbehaviour among the children wouldbe reduced. Costs of servicesaccessed by the children and theircarers were also collected (for serviceuse/cost information see the article byPat, Rhiannon and Seow Tien).

Forty-six foster carers from threeNorth/Mid Wales Local Authoritiesparticipated in this exploratory study.Of these 29 attended a parent groupand 17 were on a waiting list controlgroup. The foster carers were seen atbaseline and six months later, with theintervention carers attending theprogramme in the interim.

Behavioural outcomes wereassessed using standardised, validatedmeasures to assess carercompetencies, carer depression andchild behavioural and emotionalproblems.

The intervention achievedsignificant reductions in children’shyperactivity as rated by bothteachers and carers, intensity ofproblems as rated by carers (seeFigure 1) and overall total difficulties(behavioural and emotional) as ratedby teachers. Furthermore, depressionscores for intervention carers werereduced after intervention.

Carer and leader feedback, andchild outcome analyses demonstratedthat, in the short term, the programme

was well received and beneficial tocarers and children. Both carers andleaders felt that there was a definiteplace for this programme, especiallyfor new carers or prospective adoptiveparents. New carers found the groupto be particularly useful andsupportive especially if they had nothad children of their own. All carersfound the content useful andwelcomed the chance to discussissues and problem solve with othercarers in a confidential environment.

Leaders and carers thought that theprogramme might benefit from evenmore focus on play and relationshipbuilding, as many looked afterchildren have often not had theopportunity to form stable andpositive social relationships.

Our findings underline the need toensure that foster carers and otherprofessionals understand, and canaddress, the emotional andbehavioural difficulties of lookedafter children. Rather than awaiting adiagnosis in order to access evidence-based treatments (and reduce thechance of a placement breakingdown), the IY group ‘Parent’programme should be offered to allfoster carers. Professionals workingwith these children would also benefitfrom being able to deliver this supportto allow more of these children tofulfill their potential as adults andensure a consistent approach to them.Where children are likely to returnhome (over 50%) it would also behelpful for birth parents to attendcourses possibly together with theirlooked after children carers.

Cred y rhain bod y rhaglen wedibod yn fuddiol iddynt hwy ac i’r plant ymaent yn gofalu amdanynt. Maeawdurdodau lleol (Gwynedd, Ynys Môn aChonwy) wedi cynnig rhaglen y BRh iofalwyr maeth ac unwaith eto, mae’rgofalwyr wedi nodi ei fod yn fuddiol. Foddbynnag, hyd nes yr astudiaeth bresennol,nid oedd rhaglen y BRh wedi cael eiwerthuso’n ffurfiol gyda gofalwyr maeth.

‘Roedd yr astudiaeth yn brosiectdeuddeng mis ym Mangor ar y cyd agIMSCaR a Seicoleg i sefydlu pa morddefnyddiol yw rhaglen y BRh i rienimaeth a’r plant y maent yn gofaluamdanynt. Noddwyd y prosiect ganSwyddfa Cymru ar gyfer Ymchwil aDatblygu Iechyd a Gofal Cymdeithasol(WORD). Rhagwelwyd y byddai llai oymddygiad problemus ymysg y plant.Casglwyd manylion costau’r gwasanaethau‘roedd y plant a’u gofalwyr yn eudefnyddio hefyd (i weld y wybodaeth amddefnydd gwasanaeth/cost, darllenwcherthygl Pat, Rhiannon a Seow Tien).

Cymrodd 46 o ofalwyr maeth o driAwdurdod Lleol yng Ngogledd/CanolbarthCymru ran yn yr astudiaeth archwiliadolhon. O’r rhain, mynychodd 29 grwp rhieniac roedd 17 mewn grwp rheolydd ar restraros. Gwelwyd y gofalwyr maeth ar ycychwyn ac yna chwe mis ynddiweddarach, gyda gofalwyr y grwp

ymyrraeth yn mynychu’r rhaglen yn ycyfamser.

Aseswyd y canlyniadau ymddygiadolgan ddefnyddio mesurau wedi’u safoni a’udilysu i asesu cymhwysedd y gofalwyr,iselder y gofalwyr a phroblemauymddygiadol ac emosiynol y plant.

Llwyddodd yr ymyrraeth i leihaugorfywiogrwydd y plant yn sylweddol, ynôl yr athrawon a’r gofalwyr, dwyster yproblemau yn ôl y gofalwyr (gwelerFfigwr 1) a chyfanswm yr anawsterau’ngyffredinol (ymddygiadol ac emosiynol)yn ôl yr athrawon. Yn ogystal, roeddsgorau iselder gofalwyr y grwp ymyrraethwedi gostwng ar ôl yr ymyrraeth.

Dangosodd adborth y gofalwyr a’rarweinwyr, a dadansoddiadau oganlyniadau’r plant, y cafodd y rhaglengroeso da a’i bod yn fuddiol i’r gofalwyra’r plant yn y tymor byr. IY parent programme works for children at risk of ADHD

In April I was awarded my Ph.D., which reported on theeffectiveness of the Incredible Years (IY) BASIC ParentingProgramme with a sub-set of families of pre-school children

from the main Sure Start sample who were at risk of developingADHD as well as conduct problems. The results demonstratedstatistical and clinically significant reductions in child ADHDsymptoms, as well as significant improvements in positive parenting.These improvements were maintained for at least twelve months. I am fortunate to remain a part ofthe IY Wales team, as I now have apost as a Research Officer,investigating the new IY ToddlerParent Programme, alongside NiaGriffith, who is evaluating theprogramme for her Ph.D. My mainrole, so far, has been to adapt theDyadic Parent-child InteractionCoding System (DPICS) for usewith children aged between oneand three-years of age. As well asadding examples of parent-childinteraction to reflect limited andvaried child language abilities, fournew categories have been includedto assess parental strategies topromote their child’s languagedevelopment. Nia, Pam, Catrin,Tracey and I have been codingvideo-taped interactions betweenparents and toddlers and we aregrateful to Tracey, Pam, and Catrin,for volunteering to help out withdata collection during busyperiods.

In Phase One we visited familiesin Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bangor,Caernarfon, Holyhead, Llanrwstand Welshpool to collect baselinemeasures, which includedinterview, questionnaire, and directobservation. It is exciting to beconducting the first ever evaluation

Tracey and I delivered two five-day training courses for researcherson using the DPICS. In May wetrained at the National Universityof Ireland, Maynooth, inpreparation for their forthcomingevaluation of the IY Parentingprogramme for children at risk ofdeveloping conduct problems. InJune, we travelled to Portugal totrain researchers at the Faculty ofPsychology, University ofCoimbra, as they prepare toundertake the first randomisedcontrolled trial of the IYprogrammes with Portuguesefamilies.

Following a successful smallgrant application to the NorthWales Research Committee(£10k), we have funds for a small-scale evaluation of the IY BASICParenting Programme with nurseryand crèche staff. We are hoping torecruit children, aged between twoand three-years, and their nurserycarers from six nurseries in FlyingStart areas in Gwynedd and arecurrently negotiating with localservices about this.

Ihave been part of the IY Walesteam since 2004, when I joinedthe observation team for the

Sure Start study. Next I completedan M.Sc. for which I developedand validated a classroomobservation measure – theTeacher-Pupil Observation Tool,or T-POT. This has since beenused to evaluate the IY TeacherClassroom Management (TCM)Programme in Gwynedd primaryschool reception classes for myPh.D. research, jointly funded bythe Economic and Social ResearchCouncil (ESRC) and GwyneddEducation Authority. Until nowthe TCM has only been evaluatedalongside the Parentingprogramme and/or the Dinoprogrammes. Our preliminaryfindings suggest that the TCMprogramme alone producesbenefits for both children andteachers. The teachers werealready doing a great job,generally positive in interactionswith pupils, and pupils in turnwere generally compliant and

positive in theirinteractions with bothteachers and otherchildren. Nevertheless,the TCM programmedecreases negative andincreases positive childbehaviours, leading toa more on-task andcompliant classroom, with lessteacher time spent discipliningand more time teaching.

I am nearing the completion ofmy Ph.D. I’ve enjoyed being partof the IYW team. I have madelifelong friends and receivedample support and encouragementthroughout. Although we have allworked hard on our respectiveresearch projects, laughter andhumour have always been aprominent feature, even whenthings weren’t going quite assmoothly as hoped, and for that Iam truly grateful. I will take awaymany fond memories of my timehere, and am confident that there’splenty more where they camefrom.

preceded by a day with Parent and Childprogramme consultation workshops and abackground and fidelity workshop forservice managers. We will be presentingoutcomes from current research including

Researching the new Toddler Programme across WalesNia Griffith

Ihave just started the secondyear of my Ph.D. funded bythe Centre for Developing

Teaching through the Mediumof Welsh, and am evaluating theIncredible Years (IY) ToddlerParenting programme,supervised by Judy and DavidDaley.

The evaluation is part funded by theWelsh Assembly Government (WAG),and will be run in nine Flying Startareas in Wales over the next two yearsin a Randomised Controlled Trial. TheToddler programme is a new variant ofthe IY Parenting programmes, forparents of children aged 1-3 years andfocuses on enhancing early childdevelopment. Recruitment has beencarried out locally by group leaders.

With Karen Jones, I have done a lotof work in preparation of theevaluation. Following a detailedliterature search and consultation withWAG, a battery of measures waschosen, including a developmentalassessment, parent report of childdevelopment and of their own mentalhealth, parenting competence andstress, an assessment of the homeenvironment and direct observation of

parent-child interactions. We havesecured the relevant training andaccreditation for using these measuresand have established weekly meetingsto ensure that high standards ofreliability are maintained. Baselinedata collection has been completed inthe six North/Mid Wales areas and thegroups commenced in September orearly October. Three partners havebeen identified in the South andbaseline data collectionwill commence inDecember. The response tothe research has beenfantastic and we would liketo thank all ourenthusiastic partners whohave worked so hard torecruit participants and setup the groups. We wouldlike to thank all the parentswe have seen so far fortheir welcome and interest in theproject. Watch this space next year forearly results and contact me for moreinformation about the trial.

Congratulations to Dr. Karen Jones Karen completed her Ph.D. and wasawarded her well-earned Doctorate in May2008. Karen initially joined the team in2002 as a part-time research assistantworking on the Sure Start project and thenundertook a Ph.D., jointly funded by theESRC and NWW NHS Trust. She looked atthe impact of the IY Parent programme oninattentive children from within the SureStart sample. We are delighted that she hasremained within the team working on theToddler research programme with NiaGriffith. She is the first of our Ph.D.students to complete her thesis and has set ahigh standard for the others to follow.

Evaluating treatment fidelity of the IncredibleYears BASIC Parenting ProgrammeCatrin Eames

I used the LOT to code leaderbehaviour in a sample of parent groupsessions taken from the twelve groupsin the Sure Start study. Positive leaderbehaviours predicted change inobserved positive parenting, which inturn predicted change in childbehaviour. Similar, although weaker,relationships were indicated betweenleader behaviours and self-reportedchange in parenting. A paper outliningthese results has been submitted andfurther papers are in preparation.

I first joined IYW for the summer of2002 at the end of the second year ofmy undergraduate course at Cardiffwhen I was fortunate to have fundingsupport from Goronwy and BarbaraCleaver. They continued their supportwhen I returned to work as a ResearchAssistant on the Sure Start Study in2003 and subsequently contributedfunding towards my Ph.D.. Mysincerest thanks for your generosityand support over the years.

I have recently taken a post as aResearch Officer evaluating theeffectiveness of interventions inmodifying risk and severity of relapsein patients with recurrent depression athigh suicide risk. I am based in Bangorand working in collaboration withProfessor Mark Williams at OxfordUniversity. Having left IYW andsubmitted my Ph.D. I would also like toexpress my gratitude to Judy, for givingme an invaluable opportunity from thevery beginning, and for continuing tosupport and inspire over the years.Great thanks also to Dave Daley, whohas advised and collaborated aboveand beyond the call of duty of acommittee chair, and to whom I owe agreat deal for keeping the momentum

of the Ph.D. going! Thanks also toChris Whitaker, who helped methrough (the sometimes seeminglyendless!) sea of stats! As ever, thanksto Dilys for always making time to helpwith anything, and all at IYW.

For my Ph.D., supervised by Judy and Carl Hughes and chaired by Dave Daley, I have developedthe Leader Observation Tool (LOT). This is a process skills measure of treatment fidelity for theIY BASIC Parenting Programme. The LOT produces scores of a variety of leader behaviours. A

paper documenting the psychometric properties of the LOT was published earlier this yeardemonstrating its reliability and validity.

Yn yr astudiaeth hon,bu i ni fesur costau gwasanaethau iechyd,gofal cymdeithasol ac addysg arbennig ganddefnyddio dyddiaduron a holiadur ar ydefnydd o wasanaethau. Establishing the cost of Looked After Children

We had previously calculated thecost of running parenting groups. Inthis study we measured health, socialcare and special educational servicecosts using a service utilisationquestionnaire and diaries. Foster carersof 42 children aged between 2 and 17years provided four months serviceutilisation information. Thirty carersalso returned cost diaries.

Despite randomisation theintervention foster carers reportedhaving children with greaterdifficulties at baseline and, during thesix months study, they accessed moreservices than the control children,particularly practice nurse and socialworker contacts. They also had moreadditional meetings with both head andclass teachers and educational socialworkers. The mean cost of all services,

apart from actual payment to fostercarers, used by the children in our studyperiod was £2,492 in the interventiongroup and £1,943 in the control. Thediaries provided additionalinformation, for example on contactswith agencies such as police, solicitorsand courts and additional expenditurefor furniture, holidays, birthday orspecialist sports clothing. One carermentioned the cost of fuel spent drivingaround looking for a child.

We are currently undertaking furtheranalysis and writing up the results forpublication. We have enjoyed workingwith Tracey and look forward to furthercollaborative projects in the future.

Over the last year we have worked with Tracey (see Tracey’sreport) to explore the cost of children in foster care andthe relative cost effectiveness of the IY Parentprogramme with foster carers. Dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf buom yn cydweithio â Tracey (gweler

Iwork for ‘Flying Start’ in the Cardigan area,and recently delivered a BASIC IncredibleYears course with Andrina and Andrea from

the local primary school, and Anona the managerof the Integrated Children Centre where thecourse took place.

Local parents identified their own need for helpand support with managing their children’sbehaviour and six parents completed the course.Parents were given their own personal copy of theIncredible Years book. Their children (under 4)were cared for by qualified staff in the adjoiningroom. After each session, parents and staff joinedthe children for a ‘healthy eating lunch’.

Feedback from parents was very positive:“I enjoyed meeting new parents and having

group discussions. It made me realise that I’m nota bad parent, and not the only one havingproblems. The sessions can be serious or light-hearted; I think we’ve all bonded pretty well It’salso nice to have a coffee and lunch together afterthe session”

“Enjoyed the course. Group discussions helpedme realise that other parents had problems withtheir children and issues in everyday life. Crèchewas a big help”

“The course has helped me become aware of theway I was dealing with my children’s behaviourand I now approach it with a positive rather thena negative attitude”

“Crèche facility was great and the lunchexcellent, it was definitely ‘my time’. Thank you.”

“The course is a great way of meeting othermums and discussing ‘problems’. Taking on otherpeople’s ways of coping and approaching issues aswell as that of the course. I have really enjoyed thecourse, the company and will miss Thursdaymornings”.

Yn ystod ysesiynau, bu i ni atgyfnerthu eudysgu blaenorol, gan roi mwy obwyslais ar ddefnyddio’r sgiliau a’rstrategaethau mewn sefyllfaoedd goiawn. ‘Roedd hyn yn cynnwys datrysproblemau ‘roedd plant unigol wedidod ar eu traws yn ystod yr wythnos,er enghraifft, sut i anwybydduymddygiad aflonyddgar, rhannu hoffdegan a gofyn i blant eraill am gaelymuno â’u gêm.

As Classroom Dina is an integralpart of the school curriculum thechildren were already familiar withthe content of the programme.During the sessions, weconsolidated their prior learning,placing increased emphasis onapplying the skills and strategies toreal life situations. This includedsolving problems that individualchildren had encountered during theweek, for example, how to ignoredisruptive behaviour, share afavourite toy and ask other childrento let them join in their game.

The children looked forward tothe sessions and particularlybenefited from the teamworkactivities, which involved applyingthe social and emotional skillslearnt through the curriculum inpractical tasks. For example, in onesession the children worked in pairs

to build a tent from sticks, tape andmaterial and then made a plan ofwhich ten items they would takewith them on a camping trip.During these activities they werecoached to share and take turns,problem-solve, listen to each other’ssuggestions and appreciate differentpoints of view.

The school was very welcomingand both parents and the classteacher were supportive in ensuringchildren had completed theirhomework. At the end of the

programme, the class teacherreported benefits to the children’sbehaviour in the regular classroom.For example, two children wereconcentrating better in class, onechild who had previously haddifficulties coming to school washappier in school and less moodyand one child’s behaviour hadgenerally improved and he wasmore co-operative.

We would like to thank the staffof Ysgol Babanod Coedmawr andthe children and their parents whoparticipated in the programme. Thissmall trial has encouragedGwynedd to extend the idea to otherschools and children using learningsupport staff and specialist teachersstarting with Ysgol Bro Lleu,Penygroes.

Since social and emotional skills are pre-requisites to learning it is important that childrenreceive additional coaching in these essential skills. Gwynedd Education service haveaddressed this by introducing the Classroom Dino programme into all of its schools (see

report by Rhiain Gwyn). However, there had been discussion for some time about the needs ofsome children for additional coaching and the summer term provided an opportunity to try thisout. We delivered ten sessions of small group Dinosaur school in Ysgol Babanod Coedmawr inBangor to five boys and two girls, from years one and two. The curriculum included content onhow to do your best in school, detecting and understanding feelings, problem solving, angermanagement and friendship skills.

mhob un o’u hysgolion (gweler adroddiad Rhiain Gwyn). Fodd bynnag, bu trafodaeth ers crynamser am angen gan rhai plant am hyfforddiant ychwanegol, a daeth tymor yr haf â chyfle i roicynnig ar hyn. Bu i ni gyflwyno deg sesiwn ysgol Dinosor i grwpiau bach yn Ysgol BabanodCoedmawr ym Mangor i bum bachgen a dwy ferch o flynyddoedd un a dau. ‘Roedd y cwricwlwmyn cynnwys adrannau ar sut i wneud eich gorau yn yr ysgol, adnabod a deall teimladau, datrysproblemau, rheoli dicter a sgiliau gwneud ffrindiau.

We work in Caban Bach Family Centre inBlaenau Ffestiniog.

Six workers in the Family Support Team aretrained to deliver the BASIC course, (ourselves,Francis, Delyth, Llinos and Sarah) and theIncredible Years is run as a rolling programmethroughout the year. Between us we have deliveredfourteen BASIC, one Advance, and are currentlydelivering the Toddler programme as part of theResearch. Francis and Delyth have delivered aBASIC, and Sarah is looking forward to co-leading her first group in the New Year.

Seven Nursery staff have completed the twelveweek BASIC course and are implementing theIncredible Years with the children and parents.

We are thoroughly enjoying the challenge of co-leading the Toddler research, and value the supportof Judy, Bridget, Nia, Karen, Dilys and all thegroup leaders attending the supervision sessions.

“If I wasn’t attending this course, I would havehanded my son over to my mother (and you knowhow I hated my mother!) This course isn’t what Iexpected, I didn’t want to come at first, I didn’tthink I’d learn anything and that I wouldn’t enjoyit – thought it would be like school. But it’s not, Ihave enjoyed it, we have all learned together andshared a lot. We even get rewards, presents andnice food! I was so stressed before, now I knowhow to calm down, chill, and see things better”

It’s been another very busy year so here are some highlights – in no particular order! Delivering theBASIC programme in Tywyn with Ann Hughes, school nurse, was well worth the 150 mile round tripeach week. The parents were enthusiastic and we knew from the first session that they were going to

benefit from the programme. This was confirmed by the outcome measures that showed positive changesthat had been made through their hard work.

Helen Henningham and Idelivered ten Small Group Dinasessions in Ysgol BabanodCoedmawr during the summer term.Getting to grips with Wally, Mollyand Dina, not to mention a group oflively six and seven year olds provedto be quite a challenge! The schoolwas welcoming and supportive and itwas rewarding to see the children’senthusiasm for the activities we hadprepared. Most of them were movingon to Junior school in September and,hopefully, the Classroom Dina (animportant part of this school’scurriculum) plus the Small GroupDina sessions, will help them managethis transition well.

Another challenge has been todeliver the new School Age and

Advance Parent programmes inCAMHS and to explore how they canmost usefully meet the needs of thefamilies of referred children and I amcurrently delivering one of theToddler programme research groupswith Eileen Dewhurst.

I delivered my first solo BASICParent group leader trainingworkshop in January and a second inthe summer term. Training is animportant part of the mentor role, andwas one of my most challenging andfulfilling experiences of the year. Iwill deliver a three-day trainingworkshop once a term for staff in theNWW Trust area. BASIC leadertraining is just a beginning.Supervision and Consultation providean opportunity to exchange ideas and

keep people in touch with newdevelopments. I have enjoyedsupporting staff who deliver theprogramme in the community,sometimes in difficult circumstancesand with limited funding.

I am always inspired by andgrateful to the Incredible Yearscolleagues I work alongside. Thanksand good luck to AssistantPsychologist Delyth Pritchard who isnow moving on and thank you Judyfor your support throughout the year.

We would like to thank allthe services that areparticipating in the first

ever evaluation of the IncredibleYears Toddler ParentingProgramme. The response has beenfantastic, with nine servicesparticipating in the mainRandomised Controlled Trial, withgroups being run in BlaenauFfestiniog, Bangor, Caernarfon,Holyhead, Llanrwst, Welshpool,Rhondda Cynnon Taf, BlaenauGwent and Neath Port Talbot.

A further seven services areproviding the study with sets ofbefore and after questionnairescompleted by parents. Thesegroups are being run inYstradgynlais, Cardiff, Swansea,Wrexham, Fflintshire andDenbighshire.

The contribution of all theseservices is invaluable and wecannot thank group leaders andservice managers enough for theirenthusiasm and support.

Ymuno â’r Tîm BRh Cymruyn ystod fy mlwyddyn sabotholDr. Helen Henningham

In 2006/07 I completed a pilot studyof the IY TCM and aspects ofClassroom Dina Curriculum (CD).Teachers who participated usedsignificantly more positive and fewernegative strategies and promotedchildren’s social and emotional skillsmore than comparison teachers whohad not participated. In addition,ratings of children’s classroombehaviour showed that children inintervention classrooms were lessdisruptive and aggressive anddisplayed more interest and enthusiasmin classroom activities than children inthe comparison classrooms. Theintervention was extremely well-received by the teachers who reportedwide ranging benefits on their ownbehaviours and attitudes, on theirrelationships with parents and on thebehaviour of children in their class.

In October 2007, I came to the UKto receive additional training in childand adolescent mental health andsupervision in the IY programmes. Iwas based in the Institute of Psychiatryin London and spent three months atthe Incredible Years Centre in Wales.Judy planned a great programme forme. I helped to facilitate an IY Toddlergroup in Bangor, observed a selectionof the Infant group sessions, deliveredthe IY Small Group Dinosaurprogramme with Bridget Large (seeseparate article) and facilitated an IYTeacher programme in Powys with SueEvans and Ceri Rees. I also attendedadd-on training in the Infant andToddler programmes. This placementat the IY Wales Centre was extremelybeneficial and I am now moreequipped to deliver the IY programmeswith fidelity in Jamaica.

A big thank you to everyone whohelped to make my placement asuccess and a special thank you to Judyfor organising such a comprehensiveprogramme, Sue for being a fantasticrole model and giving me very valuablefeedback on my group leader skills,Bridget for sharing her extensiveknowledge and experience of the IYprogrammes and Dilys and Kath for allthe day-to-day assistance. In additionto being a very productive placement itwas also good fun working with the IYWales team.

Iam a Lecturer in Special Education at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica and have been inthe UK for a year as part of a Wellcome Research Fellowship. My research involves evaluating theIncredible Years (IY) Teacher Classroom Management (TCM) Programme in Jamaican pre-schools

and determining the effect of the training on child behaviour at home and at school and on teachers’behavioural management skills.

The conference wasopened by Ieuan Wyn Jones, DeputyFirst Minster at the Welsh AssemblyGovernment. who spoke of thecommitment of WAG to resourcinglinks between academics, commercialand public sector bodies in order toput Wales in the forefront ofinnovation.

The conference was well attendedby academics from across Wales aswell as NHS and Local Authorityrepresentatives and business andvoluntary sector representatives andlooks set to become an annual event.Congratulations to Dr Val Morrison,Deputy Head of School Third Missionwho, with colleagues, worked so hardto make it happen.

This summer I successfully completed my second year atCardiff University, studying Psychology, and was delighted toobtain a ten-week GoWales placement with the IY Wales

team in Bangor.Working with the team has been fantastic and has enabled me to gain and

develop many useful skills such as communication, organisation, and IT skillsworking mostly on the leader survey. Since I am hoping to apply for a Clinical

Psychology course in the future, this placement hasbeen an amazing opportunity for me to gain some vitalexperience, and to see the vast amount of dedicationand hard work that a research team needs to besuccessful.

I would like to thank the team for their kindness andsupport throughout the placement, and especially Judyand Dilys for giving me the opportunity to work withthe team over the summer. Thank you!

Irecently graduated from Cardiff University with a degree inChemistry and my next goal is to complete a PGCE course atBangor University and become a chemistry teacher. I was happy

to obtain a GoWales placement at the Incredible Years Wales (IYW)Centre for the Summer. The ten-week placement was a brilliantopportunity for me to contribute and improve my communication,organisation and IT skills.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt morethan I would ever have had in a typical summer job.Working at the IYW Centre, mainly getting the newslettertogether, was an eye opener as to how much work andteamwork is required for a research team to be successful.

I would like to thank all the staff at the IYW Centre formaking my placement a truly memorable experience and aspecial thanks to Judy, Tracey and Dilys with whom Iworked closely and who gave me endless support.

After successfully completing my Masters degree in the foundationsof clinical psychology at Bangor University this September, I wasdelighted to receive GoWales funding to work at the IY Wales

centre for a ten week placement as a research assistant. This placement hasafforded me the opportunity to enhance my communication, IT, organisation andreport writing skills. In addition it has given me practical experience workingwithin a psychology based setting.

During my placement my main role has been to work on a report of evaluations byservice managers of the IY programmes started in the summer by Margiad, anothersuccessful GoWales applicant. This survey was commissioned by the Welsh AssemblyGovernment to establish the extent of developments with the IY parenting programmeacross Wales. Service Manager responses have shown that the Parent Programme hasbeen delivered in all 22 Authorities and that as well as their use in early interventionsettings such as children’s centres and Flying Start services there is also increasing useof the programmes with older children in Child and Adolescent Mental Healthservices, and with foster carers. In addition twelve Authorities across Wales are takingpart in the research to evaluate the new IY Toddler programme. There was a high levelof satisfaction with the programme and service managers’ comments were mainlyabout how to get support to enable more effective delivery of the programme. Fourteenservices have written the programme into their service plan and all Authorities haveplans to deliver the programme during the coming year. The report will be completedlater this month and circulated to all Authorities in Wales

I have also worked closely with Nia Griffiths and Karen Jones inputting data andmaking questionnaire packs for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the IY ToddlerParenting Programme. The centre is extremely busy and the dedication and hard workof the members of staff is inspiring. Thanks to my time at IY I am now pursuingfunding to undertake a Ph.D. at Bangor.

I would like to thank all the team for their kindness and support, especially Judy,Tracey and Dilys for giving me the opportunity to work for them; it’s been a truly greatexperience.

Yn ogystal â hyn, mae 12Awdurdod ar draws Cymru yn cymryd rhan mewn ymchwil i ddatblygu y rhaglen PlantBach BRh newydd. Roedd lefel uchel o foddhad gyda'r rhaglen ac roedd sylwadau yrheolwyr gwasanaeth yn aml yn sôn sut i gael cefnogaeth i alluogi dosbarthiad mwyeffeithiol o'r rhaglen. Mae pedair ar ddeg o wasanaethau wedi ychwanegu’r rhaglen i'wcynllun gwasanaeth ac mae gan pob Awdurdod gynlluniau i ddatblygu'r rhaglen yn yflwyddyn sy'n dod. Mae’r gwaith o roi rhaglenni’r Blynyddoedd Rhyfeddol(BRh) ar waith yng Ngweriniaeth Yr Iwerddon yncarlamu ymlaen. Dan stiwardiaeth fedrus y

Gyfarwyddwraig, Margaret Maher, a’i thîm yn Archways, mae’rrhaglen bellach ar gael yn eang i rieni, athrawon a phlant mewnsefydliadau cymunedol ac ysgolion ledled Iwerddon.

Gwelwyd cynnydd hefyd ynymrwymiad tair blynedd Archways iweithredu a gwerthuso rhaglen y BRhgyda phlant sydd ag anawsterauemosiynol ac ymddygiadol. Ganweithio mewn partneriaeth â DrSinead McGilloway ym MhrifysgolGenedlaethol Yr Iwerddon ymMaynooth, cwblhaodd Archways gamcyntaf astudiaeth i effeithiau’rRhaglen Magu Plant BASIC ynddiweddar gyda 32 o rieni ac mae’r ailgam wedi dechrau. Buom yn ddigonffodus i gael cefnogaeth Judy addarparodd, gyda chymorth DrDermot O’Reilly, gyfres oddiwrnodau ymgynghori i arweinwyrgrwpiau. Gwerthfawrogwyd eichefnogaeth a’i chyngor doeth ynfawr.

Mae Archways hefyd yn cynnal ygwerthusiad trwyadl cyntaf o raglenRheolaeth Dosbarth i Athrawon(RhDA) y BRh yn Yr Iwerddon.‘Rydym wedi cwblhau’r gwaithparatoi mewn deuddeg o ysgolion ynLimerick, sy’n ardal dan anfantaisfawr o’r wlad, a bydd y gwerthusiadllawn yn cychwyn ym mis Hydref.

I ddathlu a lledaenu’r cynnydd hydyma, cynhaliodd Archwaysgynhadledd genedlaethol ar y19eg oFai, 2008. ‘Roedd yn lwyddiant mawr

gyda dros 250 o ddirprwyon ynbresennol yn cynrychioli asiantaethau,sefydliadau ac adrannau gwleidyddolallweddol o bob cwr o’r wlad. Ymysgy cyflwyniadau cafwyd siaradwyr oNorwy, Jamaica a’r DU. Judy oedd ybrif siaradwraig, gyda'i chyflwyniad arddatblygiad y rhaglenni yn Seattle acyng Nghymru. Fel arfer, gwnaeth ynsiwr ei bod ar gael drwy gydol ygynhadledd (ac wedyn) i’r rheiny oeddyn dymuno trafod rhaglenni’r BRhneu sgwrsio am eu profiadau felarweinwyr grwpiau yn cyflwyno’rrhaglen. Gwerthfawrogwyd eididwylledd a’i pharodrwydd i sgwrsiogan bawb a fynychodd.

Work to implement the Incredible Years (IY) programmesin the Republic of Ireland continues at a pace. Underthe capable stewardship of Director Margaret Maher

and her team in Archways, the programme is now widely availableto parents, teachers and children in community organisations andschools throughout Ireland.

Archway’s three-year commitment toimplement and evaluate the IYprogramme with children experiencingemotional and behavioural difficultieshas also progressed. Working incollaboration with Dr. SineadMcGilloway at the National Universityof Ireland Maynooth, Archwaysrecently concluded the first phase of astudy of the BASIC Parent Programmewith 32 parents and the second phase isunder way. We were fortunate to havesupport from Judy who, with assistancefrom Dr. Dermot O’Reilly, providedconsultation days to group leaders. Hersupport and sage advice was greatlyappreciated.

Archways are also undertaking thefirst rigorous evaluation of the IYTeacher Classroom Managementprogramme (TCM) in Ireland.Preparatory work in twelve schools inLimerick, a highly disadvantaged area ofthe country, has been completed and thefull evaluation commenced in October.

To celebrate and disseminate progressto date Archways held a nationalconference on 19th May, 2008. This was

a huge success with over 250 delegatesrepresenting key agencies, organisationsand political departments from aroundthe country. Presentations includedspeakers from Norway, Jamaica and theUK. Judy gave the keynote presentationon the development of the programmesin Seattle and Wales and, as always madeherself available throughout theconference (and beyond) to discuss theIY programmes or to chat about theirexperience as group leaders deliveringthe programme. This openness andavailability was greatly appreciated bythose in attendance.

The Welsh delegation also contributedin a variety of ways, including apresentation on the recent completedfoster carer study and through an array ofposters charting research and servicedevelopments in Wales. The Celtic linkcontinues with both Judy and Traceysupporting the continuing researchactivity at Maynouth.

Developments in Ireland -Archways

CRC Cymru has been establishedto support the development ofhealth related research acrossWales and employs a group of staff(the Research ProfessionalNetwork) with experience of directpatient and service user contact.We had already held a meetingwith Jayne Jones, North WalesRegional Network Manager, andJulia Roberts, Clinical StudiesOfficer, and invited them tobecome part of our researchsteering group with a view tocontributing resources to ourongoing Toddler programmeresearch.

The Knowledge Exchangeconference provided a furthernetworking opportunity throughdiscussions with the newlyappointed North Wales ClinicalStudies Officer, Lucie Hobson whois likely to have some timeallocated to support datacollection for the toddlerprogramme research.

“How would we cope with fifteenmothers and babies? Would we beheard over the noise of the babies?Would two hours be too long? Wouldthe mothers stick to the programmeespecially as it was held at 10 am?”

We needn’t have worried. Thebabies, aged from two to six months,when the course commenced, baskedin the undivided attention of theirmothers for two hours and lovedsocialising with the other babies in thegroup. It was a delight to see themdeveloping and the mothers takingpride in their weekly achievements.Not all mothers completed writtenhome activities but all reportedverbally on their baby’s progress andtheir baby’s response to differentactivities and interactions.

The film clips triggered interestinggroup discussions with all mothershaving the confidence to join in as theweeks went by. Topics included safety,feeding and sleeping patterns,relationships with partners andgrandparents and coping withdepression and the impact of having ababy on parental lifestyle. Muchemphasis was put on understandingbabies’ cues and interactions andbecoming more sensitive to babies’needs without forgetting that mothersalso have needs.

As health visitors we hope to runfurther programmes which will beoffered to mothers after the initial Jig-So sessions. Some of the mothers saidthat offering tea and toast before thesessions would be beneficial as it washard to get themselves and babiesready and get to the venue on time!

Having run several Incredible Years (IY) BASIC programmesover the years in Caernarfon we were delighted to co-leadthis new programme for parents and infants. We have often

felt that it would be great to do an IY ethos programme sooner withthe parents and this was a golden opportunity.We were overwhelmedwith the response from mothers of babies who had been attendingour post-natal Jig-So group in Caernarfon. Thirteen wanted toattend and two others contacted us to sign up as well.

babanod. ‘Rydym wedi teimlo’n aml y byddai’n beth da cynnal rhaglenethos y BRh yn gynharach gyda’r rhieni, a dyma gyfle gwych i wneudhynny. Cawsom ein gorlethu â’r ymateb gan famau babanod oedd wedibod yn mynychu ein grwp ôl-eni, Jig-So, yng Nghaernarfon. ‘Roedd tairar ddeg ohonynt eisiau mynychu a chysylltodd dwy arall â ni hefyd.

Rhoddwyd crynbwyslais ar ddeall arwyddion arhyngweithiadau’r babanod a dod yn fwysensitif i anghenion y babanod, hebanghofio bod gan famau anghenionhefyd.

Fel ymwelwyr iechyd, rydym yngobeithio cael cynnal rhaglenni pellach agynigir i famau ar ôl y sesiynau Jig-Socychwynnol. Dywedodd rhai o'r mamauy byddai cynnig te a thost cyn ysesiynau’n fuddiol, gan ei bod yn anoddiddynt eu paratoi eu hunain a’u babanoda chyrraedd y lleoliad mewn pryd!

DVD of the baby programmeWe were very fortunate that the Mums in our Caernarfon babygroup were willing to be filmed and we are in the process ofmaking a DVD of the baby programme along the lines of ourexisting DVD of parents talking about the BASIC Parentprogramme. We hope to complete this in time for our conferencein March 09.

Ni chafodd yr Awdurdod arian grant ihyrwyddo’r rhaglen ar gyfer rhieni eleni,ond cafwyd rhai datblygiadau diddorol ynYsgol Bro Lleu, Penygroes Mae’rPennaeth, aelod o'r staff ac un rhiant afynychodd y cwrs wedi cael hyfforddianti fod yn arweinwyr y rhaglen rhieni.Maent wedi cyflwyno’r rhaglen MaguPlant BASIC yn rheolaidd yn yr ysgol ermwyn gallu targedu pob rhiant ac erbynhyn mae 40% or rieni’r ysgol wedimynychu’r grwp rienti. Mae hwn ynddatblygiad y mae Gwynedd yn cynllunioi’w ehangu i ardaloedd eraill yn y Sir.

Mae gweithredu rhaglenni’r BRhmewn ysgolion bob amser yn cael sylw achanmoliaeth arbennig gan arolygwyrysgolion yn ystod arolygon ysgol ffurfiol.Cynhaliodd ‘Estyn’, Arolygiaeth EiMawrhydi, arolwg llawn o agweddaupenodol ar ansawdd a safonau’rAwdurdod mewn addysg, ganganolbwyntio’n benodol ar gynhwysiant.Daethant i’r casgliad bod perfformiad yrawdurdod lleol i gyflawni eigyfrifoldebau o ran hyfforddiant y BRhwedi galluogi athrawon i ddarparucefnogaeth dda iawn ar gyfer problemauymddwyn.

Mae Gwasanaeth Addysg Gwynedda’r Ysgol Seicoleg wedi dod at ei gilydd iariannu ysgoloriaeth ymchwil Ph.D.ESRC i Pam Martin. Mae’r canfyddiadaucychwynnol yn galonogol iawn a byddantyn ategu cynlluniau Gwynedd ymhellach.

Ysgolion wedi sicrhau cyllid ar gyferrhagor o gyrsiau athrawon, er ar raddfa lai,ar gyfer blwyddyn academaidd 08-09, abyddaf innau’n cynnal hyfforddiant argyfer rhagor o gynorthwywyr dosbarthyng Ngwynedd ac Ynys Môn drwyGwmni Cynnal.

All developments are carefullymonitored through strategy meetingsand two catchment areas wereselected for school visits during thesummer term. A high proportion ofteachers responded very positively tothe questionnaire as part of themonitoring process, to ascertain if theprogrammes are being implementedcorrectly and successfully and to dealwith any problems that teachersmight be experiencing. All theteachers reported that they hadbenefited from the training, someutilising the strategies better thanothers, but all were far more aware oftheir style of interacting with pupilsand dealing with inappropriatebehaviour.

The Authority did not receive grantfunding to promote the programmefor parents this year but there havebeen some interesting developmentsin Ysgol Bro Lleu, Penygroes. Theheadteacher, a member of staff andone parent who attended the coursehave received training to becomeParent programme leaders. They havedelivered the BASIC Parentingprogramme on a regular basis at theschool so that all parents can betargeted and by now 40% of theschool’s parents have attended a

parenting group. This is adevelopment Gwynedd plans toextend to other areas in the County.

The IY programmes always receivespecial attention and praise fromschool inspectors. The HMInspectorate ‘Estyn’ carried out a fullinspection on specific aspects of theAuthority’s quality and standards ineducation with special focus oninclusion. They concluded that theAuthority’s performance indischarging its responsibilities withthe IY training enabled teachers toprovide very good support forbehaviour problems.

Gwynedd Education Service andthe School of Psychology havecollaborated in the funding of anESRC Ph.D. studentship for PamMartin. The initial findings are veryencouraging and will further bolsterGwynedd’s plans.

Future Plans:The Head of School Services has

secured funding for further teachercourses, albeit on a lesser scale, forthe academic year ’08 – ’09 and I willalso undertake the training of moreclassroom assistants in Gwynedd andMôn through Cwmni Cynnal.

Summer 2008

Gwynedd Education Authority has nowcompleted its three-year plan and to date wehave trained 257 teachers, 46 headteachers and

176 classroom assistants. Every school in Gwynedd nowhas at least one trained teacher in the Teacher ClassroomManagement Programme (TCM) and the Classroom DinaSchool Curriculum (CD). Some schools have completed wholeschool staff training making use of bursaries or money in reserveto finance supply teachers. An increasing number ofheadteachers are also attending the courses. This is a positivedevelopment and vital to the proper implementation of theprogrammes in schools. All the teachers in the specialised unitsin the County have also received training – these include SENunits, language impairment units and pre-school assessmentunits. We have also continued with the training of classroomassistants targeting those who support teachers alreadyimplementing the programmes in the classroom.

Mae holl athrawon amrywiolunedau arbenigol y Sir hefyd wedi cael hyfforddiant - mae’r rhainyn cynnwys unedau AAA, unedau namau iaith ac unedau asesucyn ysgol. ‘Rydym hefyd wedi parhau i hyfforddi cynorthwywyrdosbarth, gan dargedu’r rheiny sy’n cefnogi athrawon sydd eisoesyn rhoi’r rhaglenni ar waith yn y dosbarth.

After attending an IYparent group, Fran became an activevolunteer parent support worker,assisting with recruitment, runningparent groups, weekly home visits andphone calls to families. She alsovolunteers with the local South PenlanCommunity Centre – working closelywith the Communities First co-ordinator to organise local events andis Vice-chairperson for the SupportingPositive Parents (SPP) support group.Fran plays a positive role in hercommunity and is a tower of strengthand an inspiration to many parentsboth in the IY groups and also thoseliving locally.

longstanding supporter of the IYprogramme. She was among the firstleaders trained and co-led two of ourSure Start research groups. Shebecame one of the first certifiedleaders in Wales. She has continued todeliver the programme and beenwilling and able to persuade parents inher groups to allow visitors to sit inand see the programme in action onnumerous occasions. Her experiencefeatured in a Guardian article and mostrecently she has spent many hours ofher own time reading and helping toensure that the Welsh translation of theIY book was accurate andcomprehensible.

I am in the enviable position ofbeing part of the West Cardiff Childand Parent Support Team in Barnardo’sCardiff with a dedicated rolefacilitating Parenting programmes andsupporting families whilst they areattending the programme. There is asimilar team in East Cardiff based inChildren’s Services at St Mellons andboth teams run the IY BASICprogramme with families who arereferred through Social Services.

Both teams also provide additionalsupport whilst parents are on theprogramme, such as visits from keyworkers who reinforce the strategiesand principles discussed in theparenting group. Families are alsogiven the opportunity to attend for amorning where they can talk to otherparents from the group and havefurther opportunities to developlanguage and play skills with theirchildren. Transport and meals areprovided.

In Ely we have developed aprogramme of afternoon activities thatparents can do with their children inthe centre after lunch, connected withthe group topic that day. For exampleon week two “Helping your child learnthrough play” we put out sand/water/and play-dough for tactile play, andalso have empty cardboard boxes,plastic bottles etc and parents areencouraged to follow their child’s leadin junk modelling.

The project also has family supportworkers who support families withparenting in their homes. Some ofthese have attended the WAG fundedIY training that Judy has delivered andare using it on an individual basis withfamilies. Others expressed a need toknow more about the programme and,in response, we ran an introductory IYday including an overview of the IYProgrammes, some exercises on topicscovered in the programme and sharingexperiences of working in familyhomes. Hopefully people went awaywith a better understanding of whatparents are being asked to do in theirhome assignments and will be moreable to support them in the future.

Cardiff's CYP identified that it isessential that the delivery of parentingprogrammes in Cardiff is "joined-up"and makes best use of the skills of arange of professionals from differentagencies and organisations. It is alsoessential that parenting programmesmeet the needs of parents who fallwithin identified priority groups. Thepartnership has committed funding fora parent programme co-ordinatorwhose prime role is to support the co-

ordinated development of evidenced-based parenting programmes, toensure they are delivered with fidelity.They will participate in on-goingevaluation of the programmes, (e.g.with parents of children with specialneeds, young parents, parents withmental health problems, parents ofchildren in need of behaviour support).

Parenting support in Cardiff isgrowing through partnership workingand more parents are accessing groups.This helps to reduce the stigmasometimes associated with attending aparenting programme, as it becomesmore acceptable. Four IY facilitatorsfrom the Child and Parent Supportteams recently attended the WAGfunded Infant and Toddler programmetraining, and we are looking forward todelivering these programmes inSeptember and January.

None of the above would bepossible without a real commitment toparenting programmes by everyoneinvolved, Parents, Managers, Policymakers, Facilitators, and SupportWorkers. We know that parentingprogrammes work, but will leave thelast word to someone more qualifiedthan me to comment:

People often comment that not enough resources are put inplace to ensure that research based programmes are effectivein service settings and I am amazed at the dedication and

commitment of many IY facilitators who carry out this work inaddition to other roles within their organisation.

It was with some trepidation that I delivered myfirst Teacher Classroom Management (TCM)Programme in 2006, with the Inclusion Manager,but my worries soon disappeared when theevaluations started coming in and I realised justhow good the programme is. Since then I have beenseconded to run three further programmes, andthirty-seven staff from twenty schools andnurseries across the borough have been trained.Evaluations remain incredibly positive, with over95% in the very helpful and helpful ranges; 80%reported improvement in the target child’sbehaviour after implementing the behaviour planand 100% reported improvement in other students’problems using the classroom strategies.

Taster sessions were provided for ‘Flying Start’schools interested in introducing the ClassroomDinosaur Programme. Using some of the Dinomaterials and puppets, I was able to support ‘IY’trained teachers to try out some of the Dino Unitsin one school.

Afternoons spent with twenty-six infants, theirteachers and Wally were fantastic fun! Staffreported that children were interested and engaged,not only during the sessions, but there was carry-over into other classroom situations and onto theyard. Children were talking about their feelings and

taking a problem-solving approach to theirdifferences and both aggressive children and thosewho lacked confidence made progress. During thesessions there was an increase in teacherconfidence in facilitating role-play and using thegroup to help children address problems.Responses from children were very positive withmany children able to produce thoughtful solutionsto problems such as playground fighting, bullyingand friendship difficulties.

The school is introducing the full ‘DinosaurSchool’ Programme from September and ‘FlyingStart’ has supplied the materials and funding forstaff to attend training. Using this as a beacon ofgood practice, the project will continue next termwith similar levels of support offered to another‘Flying Start’ school. In addition a participant fromthe TCM course is carrying out research for herM.Ed. dissertation into the impact of the teachertraining delivered in Blaenau Gwent. I amconfident that this will provide us with evidence tosecure longer- term funding for the programmes.

A ‘Flying Start’ for the ClassroomProgrammes in Blaenau Gwent

The Educational Psychology Service has taken a lead, in promoting the Incredible Years(IY) Teacher and Classroom Dina programmes. Funding came from a range of sources,including ‘Flying Start’. The IY Parent Programme is being rolled out in Flying Start

areas and the Co-ordinator felt that it would be beneficial for the children to move on to schoolsthat had adopted the IY ethos.

Blaenau Gwent facilitators have deliveredfifteen IY BASIC Parent programmes, twoTCM programmes and two Small Dina

groups. The Parent groups have been very wellattended with excellent evaluations received fromparents. The parenting project will be deliveringanother three programmes commencing inSeptember, for which we have a waiting list ofparents wanting to attend. We are keen to deliverthe new School Age and the Infant and Toddlerprogramme. There has been a lot of interest in bothnew programmes, particularly from our Sure StartHealth Team, who work primarily with 0-3 yearolds.

We also deliver Parent programmes in theFlying Start areas of the Borough, using schools andcommunity buildings to help engage families.

There are currently 50 facilitators trained todeliver the BASIC Parent programme. This willenable us to deliver more programmes in other areasof the borough.

As the Parenting Co-ordinator I am currentlydelivering the BASIC Parent programme to theBorough’s Home Start Volunteers and excited to betaking part in the Toddler Research.

‘Rydym yn awyddus i gyflwyno’r rhaglen OedYsgol a’r rhaglen Babanod a Phlant Bach. Cafwydcryn dipyn o ddiddordeb yn y ddwy raglen newydd,yn enwedig gan ein Tîm Iechyd Cychwyn Cadarn,sy’n gweithio’n bennaf â phlant rhwng 0 a 3 oed.

Rydym hefyd yn cyflwyno rhaglenni magu plantyn ardaloedd Dechrau’n Deg y Fwrdeistref, ganddefnyddio ysgolion ac adeiladau cymunedol i’nhelpu i gynnwys teuluoedd. Ar hyn o bryd, mae 50 ohwyluswyr wedi’u hyfforddi i gyflwyno’r rhaglenMagu Plant BASIC. Bydd hyn yn ein galluogi igyflwyno mwy o raglenni yn ardaloedd eraill yfwrdeistref.

WE CONTINUE to lead onIncredible Years ( IY) delivery inConwy. Liz offers regular BASICcourses in the two Sure Startcentres (Llandudno and Llanrwst)and Deborah works across thewhole of Conwy.

We deliver programmes duringschool terms to facilitate childcarefor parents and between us run atleast four BASIC courses a schoolterm. Liz has recently completedher 33rd course! We run at leastone evening course per year andthis year ten out of ten starterscompleted! Deborah hasundertaken six month and two-year follow-ups and the results arecomparable with Carolyn Webster-Stratton’s.

We also continue to offer theEnhancing Parenting Skills course(EPaS) for professionals, nowheavily influenced by Carolyn‘swork. Nearly all the HVs andYPHAs have completed the courseand we are starting recaps/reminders for them. Several socialworkers and others have also donethe course (114 staff in all).

We co-facilitate the BASICcourse with other workers such asHVs and YPHAs but it is not easyfor them to get sufficient time to

fully participate due to other workcommitments on their part. Lizhopes to restart co-leading withSure Start workers.

This summer we offered fourrecap session for parents who havedone the IY BASIC course (wehave done this before and it is wellreceived). There was one sessioneach on play, praise and rewards,limit setting and managingdifficult behaviour.

We continue to find the workpersonally fulfilling and veryeffective for parents.

JUDY HAS had links withNorthern Ireland for many years,particularly with Queens UniversityBelfast for whom she acted asexternal examiner. So it is excitingthat there have been lots of IYdevelopments over the past year. - In2007 Jamila Reid, assisted by Judy,delivered Classroom Dino trainingin Belfast that has resulted in aschool-based project. In themeantime Benny McDaniel whoundertook both a Masters andPh.D. at Queens (which Judy

examined) is now working forBarnardo's in NI. She broughteleven people to the IY Wales’annual conference and pre groupworkshops. Her service then fundedtraining for thirteen parent groupleaders in Bangor and in total 30parent group leaders fromNorthern Ireland have now trainedin Bangor.

It was great to see Benny and herteam again at the Archways, Dublin,conference showing in a verypractical way how organisationsfrom Northern Ireland and theRepublic can work together andbenefit from each other'sexperience. They are nownegotiating with AtlanticPhilanthropies for funding todevelop and research the IYprogrammes in the North.

News from Flintshire

Newyddion o Sir y Fflint

CHILDREN’S SERVICES Family andAdolescence Services Team (FAST),CAMHS Early Intervention, SureStart, Flying Start and Barnardo’s(Families Matter Drug and AlcoholEarly Intervention) have recently takenadvantage of the Incredible Yearstraining funded through the WelshAssembly Government (WAG). Fivepeople have received training on theInfant and Toddler programme andthree on the Advance programme. Allattendees have put into place plans fordelivery, which is great news for theparents and families of Flintshire.

We were delighted to receive theWAG funded resources for all IYprogrammes, however we do need tobuild the local infrastructure further,and agree through the local ParentingStrategy Group how to take thisforward.

A number of BASIC and oneAdvance programme have beendelivered this year, ensuring thatpeople who received the WAG fundedtraining have delivered at least oneprogramme. Services involved includeChildren’s Services, Gronant FamilyCentre, Action for Children (NCH),Educational Psychology, Save theFamily, CAMHS Early Intervention,Sure Start, Flying Start, Health andBarnardo’s. Whilst partnershipworking has its challenges it hasproven that there are also manybenefits.

All of the groups went well, withparents commenting positively on thebenefit to them and their families,including grandparents. Thecomments made by parents are heartwarming, to see the difference it hasmade to them, their children, their

family and their home life. We hopeto capture some of these comments onmedia. One parent is supporting withadministration, with the possibility ofreceiving training to deliver futureprogrammes. We are involved in theIY Toddler research.

Childrens Services (FAST) continueto deliver IY as their group workparenting programme, strengtheningtheir work over the last few years.Prior to Wendy Shaw going onmaternity leave in July this year, sheand her team developed a two-yearplan, and will be delivering twoBASIC programmes and one Advanceprogramme per academic year. These‘closed’ groups are for Social Servicereferrals only.

We would like to thank Wendy forher contribution to the development ofIY in Flintshire, and the support she

provides through supervision andsupport; for her hard work anddedication – we expect we may see heron a Baby and Toddler series soon(maybe as a mystery shopper!)

Children’s Information Service areco-ordinating information on wheregroups are planned and can act as a“single point of contact” for parentsand practitioners who want to find outabout courses. We are also providing alocal peer support group for allparenting programme facilitators, withplans to offer further group worktraining reflecting the NationalOccupational Standards for Work withParents.

TORFAENWE STARTED our first Incredible Years (IY) parentingprogramme in Torfaen in April 2008, the programme was run bySure Start and Health Visiting who have worked very hard toprepare for their group, which went well.It is hoped that we will run one IY group every term in FlyingStart areas to complement the menu of support that we alreadyhave available. In the coming year, the IY supervision provided byJudy has been invaluable in supporting this process.

Nod y gronfa hon yw hybu ymchwil yn y sector gwirfoddol ar ycyd â sefydliadau academaidd, felly dylai fod yn addas i’n sefyllfa ni.

We would like to record our thanks to our original Trustees, AnnMarie Jones (Chair), John Wyn Jones (Secretary) and MariClayton. This year they have been joined by Huw Thomas and

Judith Roberts. Judith fulfils the role of parent representative, havingexperienced the programme as a parent and supported it as an assistantpsychologist in the NWW CAMHS service. She is now a Ph.D. studentresearching in the field of dementia.

The charity has been busy applying for grants to undertake furtherresearch and dissemination in Wales with the help of Dr. Catrin Slater, aprofessional fundraiser. Our first two bids to Children in Need and theEsmee Fairburn Foundation were not successful, mainly because we are notworking directly with children and families, but we are optimistic about a bidto the Big Lottery Research fund to research the Dino programme inconjunction with local school and voluntary sector staff. This fund aims topromote research in the voluntary sector in collaboration with academicinstitutions so should suit our situation.

Barnardo’s continue to do a greatjob co-ordinating the parentingprovision and supporting group leadersfrom a range of agencies. We offerregular groups in the North, Mid. andSouth of the county.

As a mentor for the Parentprogramme I have delivered ParentGroup Leader training locally. In June/July I trained 15 new group leaders,many of whom already have groupsplanned for the autumn or spring. Weprovide all group leaders with regularsupervision and last year we were alsoable to offer a termly Consultation day,where group leaders from across thecounty got together to share ideas andlearn from each other. I am delightedthat Patricia Hughes, Team Leader atBarnardo’s, is training as an IY “PeerCoach” and offering support tocolleagues.

We were excited to be involved inthe Foster Carer Research project andto deliver two IY groups to fostercarers. Given the positive outcomes wehope to extend this provision. We arealso running the new IY Toddlerprogramme as part of research led byBangor University and trialing the newBaby Programme, we look forward toextending the programme to parents ofyounger children. In addition we arenow running our first IY School Ageprogramme, for parents of olderchildren. We are delighted that threemembers of the CAMHS service willbe running groups over the comingyear (the IY Parent programme wasrecommended by NICE as anappropriate CAMHS intervention forconduct disordered children) and thatthe Educational Psychology serviceare continuing to be actively involvedin running a range of IY groups.

Thanks to a successful bid forfunding by the Education Department,up to ten teachers per year will be

involved in running parent groups withother agencies over the next threeyears. A number of these teachers willalso be running the IY Small GroupTheraputic Dina Programme,following training by Judy lastJanuary, which was commissioned bythe Education Department. Twosuccessful pilot Small Group Dinaprogrammes took place in 2007/08 andwe hope to see further successfulgroups over the coming year. Dr. AlunFlynn, Principal EducationalPsychologist, continues to lead on thisdevelopment.

By popular demand a fourthClassroom Dina training will bedelivered in Powys in November, ledfor the first time by Judy. We havealready seen positive Estyn (SchoolInspection) reports on ClassroomDina. A third cohort of the IY TeacherClassroom Management programmewas delivered in the spring/summer ofthis year, supported by HelenHenningham from Jamaica. Mychallenge for this year is to completementor training in the TeacherProgramme so that I can furthersupport the development of the theTeacher Programme across Wales.

It has been another ‘incredible’ year in Powys withdevelopments of the Parent, Teacher and Child IYprogrammes! My job is to support the

development of IY programmes across the county, andit continues to be a privilege to work with sucheffective, evidence based programmes.

The scheme of funding, initiallylaunched under the ParentingAction Plan for Wales, was

started in April 2006 and is continuing.Over the first two years 240 staff weretrained to deliver the BASIC Parentprogramme at ten three-day workshopsand a total of 30 Consultation dayswere delivered across Wales. During2008/09 the funding is providingadditional training opportunities forstaff from every Authority in theAdvance, older School Age and newInfant and Toddler programmes pluscontinued supervision. There is alsotraining for staff from all Authorities inleading the IY Teacher ClassroomManagement (TCM) programme,which is seen by WAG as fitting wellwith the philosophy of the FoundationPhase of education in Wales.

In March 2008 WAG funded thepurchase of one set of the Infant andToddler, School Age and Advance

Parent programmes and the TCMprogramme materials for everyAuthority in Wales to support thetraining.

They also funded the translationinto Welsh and printing of 2,000 copiesof the IY parent book and these havebeen distributed to services acrossWales. Funding for 2008/09 includesthe translation and publishing of theteacher book ‘Promoting Children’sSocial and Emotional Competence’and a contribution to the costs of the2008 newsletter and the 2009 annualConference which will be in Cardiff onMarch 19th 2009 and will again beopened by Jane Hutt AM Minister forChildren, Education, LifelongLearning and Skills.

WAG have also funded theevaluation of the new Toddlerprogramme with Flying Start partnersacross Wales and this is described inNia and Karen’s reports.

WE CONTINUE to have participants for our trainings from across theworld, most recently with Dianne Lees, mentor in training in New Zealandwho came to observe the Infant and Toddler programmes and to attend anInfant add-on training day. We also had Professor Willy-Tore Mørch, and SiriGammelsæter from Norway at a recent Infant and Toddler training.

Judy has continued to support developments in Finland with training andconsultation and made her fourth visit at the end of September during whichshe accredited the first parent group leaders. She spoke at a Finnish NationalParenting conference in Helsinki in February which was attended by peoplefrom across Finland and addressed by the Minister of Health and SocialServices, Ms Paula Risikko.

A delegation from Finland are visiting Wales in January 2009.

CHILDREN IN WALES hosted the International Forumfor Child Welfare conference in Cardiff in September2008 to advocate children’s rights, development andprotection. The conference brought together delegatesfrom across the planet to discuss progress on the UNConvention in the Rights of the Child and givepresentations on Early Intervention and Prevention.Details of the conference presentations can be found onthe Children in Wales web sitewww.childreninwales.org.uk

The idea of bringing the conference to Wales was that ofChildren in Wales Director Catriona Williams who hasbeen an active member of IFCW and has now taken overas President. She persuaded the Welsh Assembly

Government to co-sponsor the conference and will preside over the 20thAnnual Conference in Bali in October 2009.

Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, opened the final day of theconference and made reference to our work in relation to earlyintervention.

The IY team presented our work in Wales in a workshop attended bydelegates from Finland, Poland, Canada, America, New Zealand,England and Wales.

The new Infant and Toddler Programmes

THERE has been extraordinary interest in the new eight-sessionprogramme for parents of infants (first year of life) and toddlers(children aged one to three years). Judy has delivered the twoprogrammes with local health visitors (see Eilir’s report on workingwith 15 parents and their babies aged between two and six months).

Both programmes have been well received and the WAG fundedtraining is being eagerly taken up across Wales. Research into theeffectiveness of the Toddler Programme is described in the report byNia and Karen.

across WalesYN DILYN mynychu gwersyll hafysgol Dina yn Seattle fis Gorffennaf2007 a hyfforddiant gyda Jamila ymMelfast, ‘roedd Judy’n falch iawn ogael cyfle i gyflwyno rhai sesiynauDina yn y Dosbarth yn YsgolLlangaffo gyda’r pennaeth, ManonWilliams. ‘Roedd Wally a Dina ynllwyddiant mawr gyda disgyblioncyfnod allweddol un, a weithiodd yngaled i ennill eu bathodynnau agwobrau bychain. Adroddwyd ar hynyn ‘Llais Llangaffo’, sef cylchlythyr yrysgol yn 2007.

“Mae Dosbarth 1 wedi bod ynffodus iawn o gael bod yn rhan o YsgolDina dan arweiniad Dr JudyHutchings. Rhaglen arbennig yw YsgolDina sy’n cynnwys tasgau/gwersi sy’nhybu ymddygiad da yn yr ysgol agartref (drwy weithgareddau gwaithcartref). Cafodd y plant fwynhad abudd o’r gweithgareddau.”

Ym mis Mawrth, cyflwynodd Judyddiwrnod cyntaf yr hyfforddiant iarweinwyr Dina yn y Dosbarth ynNulyn, gan gwblhau ei hachrediad felmentor. Bydd yn cynnal ei gweithdytridiau cyntaf yng Nghymru fisTachwedd.

FOLLOWING attendance at Dinoschool summer camp in Seattle inJuly 2007 and training with Jamila inBelfast, Judy was delighted to havethe opportunity to deliver somesessions of Classroom Dina inLlangaffo School with headteacherManon Williams. Wally and Dinawere a great hit with the key-stageone pupils who worked hard to earntheir badges and small prizes. Thiswas reported in ‘Llais Llangaffo’, theschool newsletter, in 2007.

“Class 1 have been very fortunateto be part of Dina school led byProfessor Judy Hutchings. DinaSchool is a special programmecontaining tasks/lessons thatpromote good behaviour in schooland at home (through home workactivities.) The children enjoyed andbenefited from the activities”

In March, Judy delivered day oneof the Classroom Dina leadertraining in Dublin and completed heraccreditation as a mentor. She will berunning her first three-day workshopin Wales in November.

‘Pathfinders Early Intervention’.Prosiect sydd wedi ei gyllido ganLywodraeth Westminster yw hwn iddadansoddi a rhedeg tair rhaglen sy’nseiliedig ar dystiolaeth yn Lloegr, llemae Judy wedi ei chyllido i ddarparucefnogaeth mentora. Cafodd y grwpiauBRh eu rhedeg mewn chwe AwdurdodLleol yn Lloegr a chasglwyd data cynac ôl-grwp a’i yrru ymlaen i’r tîm BRhym Mangor i’w ddadansoddi ganTracey a’i thîm. Defnyddiodd yprosiect 18 sesiwn rhaglen Rhientu aoedd yn cyfuno elfennau o’r rhaglenrhientu oed ysgol gyda rhannau o’rcwricwlwm datrys problemau oedolionuwch. Roedd y cyllid yn targedu'r rhairisg uchel 8 - 13 mlwydd oed, er bod yplant lle'r oedd eu rhieni wedimynychu’r grwpiau BRh rhwng dwy ahanner ac un ar bymtheg oed, yr oedrancymedrig ar gyfer y sampl oedd 9mlynedd ac 8 mis.

Aseswyd gallu’r rhieni, eu hiselder,

ac ymddygiad y plentyn drwyddefnyddio nifer o fesurau, adadansoddwyd y gwahaniaethaurhwng y waelodlin a’r dilyniant.Edrychom hefyd ar adborth gan rieni,gan gynnwys asesiad o berfformiadcyffredinol y plant yn y dosbarth agyda’r dilyniant i weld os oedd unrhywwelliannau.

O gyfanswm y sampl o N=366,darparwyd y data cyflawn (gwaelodlina dilyniant) gan N=223 o rieni’r plant aN=181 gan athrawon.

Gwnaeth y data gwaelodlingadarnhau bod y sampl yn bell o fewnyr amrediad clinigol ac roedd y rhieni,fel grwp, ar ben sgôr graddfa amrediadiselder mwyn i gymedrol. Roedd ycanlyniadau’n galonogol ac, fel ygwelir yn y ddau graff, darganfuomleihad arwyddocaol (p=.001) ynymddygiad camweithredol addangoswyd gan y plant fel yradroddwyd gan eu prif ofalwyr,mesurwyd hyn drwy ddefnyddioEyberg Child Behaviour Inventory(ECBI; Eyberg & Ross, 1978; Eyberg,

1980). Arsylwyd hefyd bod cynnyddmewn ymddygiad positif yn y plantgan y gofalwyr ac athrawon drwyddefnyddio’r Holiadur Cryfderau acAnawsterau (SDQ; Goodman 1997) ynogystal â lleihad arwyddocaol yniselder y rhieni. O ganlyniad i raddfa’r newid awelwyd a maint y sampl, er gwaethafdiffyg data grwp rheoli, gallwnbriodoli’r newidiadau i effaith yrhaglen rhiantu ar y rhieni, gan nawelwyd y plant o gwbl.

Mae’r data yma’n cael eiddadansoddi ymhellach ac ar hyn obryd yn cael ei ysgrifennu i gael eigyhoeddi. Early results for the ‘Pathfinder’ Project

Canlyniadau Cynnar i’r Prosiect ‘Pathfinder’

As part of my GoWalesplacement I have beeninvolved in the analysis of data

from the Pathfinder Early InterventionProject. This is a WestminsterGovernment funded project to evaluatethe roll out of three evidence-basedprogrammes in England for whichJudy was funded to provide mentoringsupport. IY groups were run in sixEnglish local authorities and they allcollected pre- and post-group data andsupplied it to the IY team in Bangor foranalysis by Tracey and the team. Theproject used an 18-session Parentprogramme that combined elements ofthe School Age Parenting programmewith parts of the Advance adultproblem solving curriculum. Thefunding targeted high-risk 8 – 13 yearolds, although the children whoseparents attended the IY groups wereaged from two and a half to 16 yearsold, the mean age for the sample was 9years and 8 months.

Parenting competencies, parental

depression, and child behaviour wasassessed using a variety of measures,and differences between baseline andfollow-up were analysed. We alsolooked at feedback from teachers,including assessment of the children’sgeneral performance in class and atfollow-up to see if there had been anyimprovements.

From the total sample of N=366,complete data (baseline and follow-up)was provided by N=223 parents andN=181 teachers.

Baseline data confirmed the sampleto be well within the clinical range andtheir parents, as a group, to be at thetop of the mild to moderate depressionscore range. The results wereencouraging and, as shown in the twographs, we found a significantreduction (p=.001) in dysfunctionalbehaviours displayed by the children asperceived by the main caregiver, thiswas measured using the Eyberg ChildBehaviour Inventory (ECBI; Eyberg &Ross, 1978; Eyberg, 1980). Figure one

shows the reduction in problematicchild behaviours to below the clinicalcut off (127).

Self-rated parental depression scoresreduced significantly (P=.001) frommild/ moderate depression toapproaching the clinical cut off (10-18)as measured by the Beck DepressionInventory (BDI, see Figure 2; Beck,Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh,1961).

An increase in positive behaviourswas also observed in the children bycaregivers and teachers using theStrengths and DifficultiesQuestionnaire (SDQ; Goodman, 1997).

The improvement noted by teacherswas also encouraging, showing theprogramme is effective in alteringchildren’s behaviour in school. Inparticular we noted a consistentreduction in hyperactive behaviours.

Given the size of the changesdemonstrated and the sample size,despite a lack of control group data, wecan attribute these changes to the effect

of the parenting programme on theparents, as the children were not seen atall. These data are being furtheranalysed and currently being writtenup for publication. It was alsoencouraging to establish that thepositive findings were achieved acrossall Authorities, so congratulations to allwho participated, and to the mentorsand trainers from across the UK thatsupported them and helped to ensurethat the programmes were deliveredwith fidelity.

It has been an interesting project towork on and a great chance to gaininsight into the successes of thedifferent IY programmes being runthroughout England and Wales. I havealso enjoyed working as part of such afriendly, welcoming, and supportiveteam.

Judy took over as theKeynote speaker inplace of Carolyn and

presented the history of, andrecent developments with, theprogrammes. Barry AndrewsT.D., Irish Minister forChildren and Youth Affairs,was present to open theconference and severalMinistry officials attendedthe day showing therecognition of the relevance ofthe programmes to Ireland.

Judy then flew to Denmarkto speak, again on behalf ofCarolyn, at the “Evidence-based methods in childwelfare – a NordicPerspective” conference inHelsingør. This was reporting

on developments acrossScandinavia with evidence-based “Blueprint”programmes, IY, MultiSystemic Therapy,Multidimensional Treatmentfoster care and FunctionalFamily Therapy as well as theOregon Social LearningCentre Parent ManagementTraining Programme. Wallythe puppet made a greatimpression on delegates at theconference as he helped Judyto introduce the DinosaurSchool curriculum. He alsohelped out the following day,when Judy was back inIreland, at the launch of theEnnis IY project in CountyClare.

In January we were visited by fourWelsh Assembly GovernmentMembers who serve on the

Enterprise and Learning Committee.Alun Cairns, South West RegionalMember, Jeff Cuthbert, Caerphilly,Janet Ryder, North Wales RegionalMember and Kirsty Williams, Breconand Radnor were accompanied byKathryn Jenkins, Clerk to theCommittee, Dan Collier, Deputy Clerkand Anne Thomas, Committeespecialist.

The visitors met with the IY researchteam and programme mentors Dr. SueEvans – Powys and Bridget Large –North West Wales. They were given anoverview of the programmes and areview of the WAG funded training

scheme and other service developmentsin Wales.

This was followed by presentationsfrom the research team on the Sure StartStudy, its impact on children with earlyconduct problems, how it helpedchildren with inattentive behaviours andwhat we learned about effective leaderbehaviours. They also learned about theevaluation of the Teacher ClassroomManagement programme in Gwyneddand the ongoing Looked After Childrenand the Infant and Toddler researchprogrammes.

The visit was deemed very successfulwith members showing a keen interestin our activities and appreciating thework undertaken by the team inpreparing for, and meeting, them.

OUR STRONG RELATIONSHIP with Gwynedd Council is set to continuewith plans for the Centre to support the Children and Young People’sStrategy “Our Plan Your Plan” and we appreciated a visit to the Centre byGwynedd’s Strategic Director for Development, Iwan Trefor Jones. Not onlyhave Gwynedd now got the TCM and Classroom Dino programme in everyprimary school (see report by Rhiain Gwyn and Pam Martin’s report on itseffectiveness) but the Parent programme is offered regularly in all of theFlying Start Centres, all of whom are partnering with us in the new Toddlerprogramme research. Gwynedd also looks set to increase availability of theParent programme to parents of school-aged children and, following a pilottrial by Bridget Large and Helen Henningham,Ysgol Bro Lleu, Penygroes arethe first school to introduce additional coaching sessions in social andemotional skills for children in school for whom the whole class lessons areinsufficient.

AFTER FOUR YEARS on the 8th floor of the Chemistry tower anexpansion in the numbers of chemists saw us moved to the Normal sitebetween Upper Bangor and the Menai Bridge. We were able to plan ourspace allocation and now have our own kitchen and comfortable newlydecorated rooms without leaking windows. We already seem to bebursting at the seams and at times the parking problems seem as bad asat the Chemistry tower but we are grateful for the improved facilitiesand hope that we will remain in our new home in the Nantlle Buildingfor a few years.

Phase one of the DCSF funded Pathfinder Early Intervention project,funding the IY Parent programme in six Local Authorities (LA) inEngland for parents of 8-13 year olds came to an end in March 2008.Judy and Dilys provided support to both the LAs and to the mentors.Services delivered the new School Aged programme plus part of theAdvanced programme over eighteen sessions. All LAs kept data for usand Tracey and Kate worked on a small evaluation of outcomes (seeKate’s article).We are now working with Birmingham, a phase two PathfinderAuthority, who have used a methodology from the Dartington SocialResearch Unit called Common Language to develop a preventionstrategy supported by all agencies in the City. The strategy, known asBrighter Futures, involves a £50m investment in twelve preventionprogrammes across all areas of children's development. It includespublic health and targeted prevention activity. Judy is supporting theimplementation of the IY Parent programme in Children's Centresand Tracey is helping to lead the rigorous evaluation of the IY andTriple-P Parenting programmes and PATHS, a school basedcurriculum aimed at improving social and emotional regulation.

THE WORK OF THE IY Centrewas represented at the BangorBranch of the British Associationfor Behavioural and CognitivePsychotherapy memorial conferencefor Sheila Jenkins held at theUniversity on 15th September 2008.Sheila was a local social worker andactive cognitive behaviouraltherapist. Judy spoke on

developments to support parentsacross Wales. Other speakers whohave been influential in takingforward community based mentalhealth services to support adultsincluded Professor Dave Richards,Exeter University, Professor ChrisCullen, Keele University and Dr.Michaela Swales, Bangor.

JUDY AND TRACEY visited our BritishCouncil partners Maria Filomena and MariaJoao in Coimbra University, Portugal,returning their two-week visit to us inBangor last September. During the visit wespoke at a National Parenting Conferenceand Judy was able to accredit Filomena andJoao as the first two Certified Parent groupleaders in Portugal. They have worked hardtranslating the programme into Portugueseand are engaged in two research projects onewith children with ADHD and another withchildren at risk of conduct disorder. We werevery well looked after and got an insight intoPortuguese life as well as an introduction tothe port wine industry. We are collaboratingon a paper exploring Portuguese and Welshparenting styles and outcomes for younghigh-risk children.

Ym mis Mawrth 2008, gwelwyd ddiwedd cam cyntaf y prosiectPathfinder, a noddwyd gan Yr Adran Plant, Ysgolion a Theuluoedd(DCSF) ac a oedd yn cyllido rhaglen Magu Plant y BRh mewnchwech Awdurdod Lleol (ALl) yn Lloegr i rieni plant rhwng 8 a 13oed. Darparodd Judy a Dilys gefnogaeth i’r ddau ALl ac i’r tîmmentoriaid. Cyflwynodd y Gwasanaethau’r rhaglen Oed Ysgolnewydd yn ogystal â rhan o’r cwricwlwm Rhaglen Uwch drosddeunaw sesiwn. Mae’r oll ALl wedi cadw data ar ein cyfer ac maeTracey yn gweithio ar ddadansoddiad bychan ar y canlyniadau‘Rydym yn awr yn gweithio gyda Birmingham, Awdurdod cam dauPathfinder, sydd wedi defnyddio methodoleg o’r Uned YmchwilCymdeithasol Darlington a elwir yn Iaith Gyfredol i ddatblygustrategaeth ataliol a gefnogir gan oll o asiantaethau’n y Ddinas.Mae’r strategaeth, a adnabyddir fel Brighter Futures, yn cwmpasubuddsoddiad o £50m mewn 12 rhaglen ataliol ar draws pob elfen oddatblygiad plentyn. Mae’n cynnwys iechyd amgylcheddol ac yntargedu gweithgaredd ataliol. Mae Judy yn cefnogi gweithrediad yrhaglen rhiant BRh mewn Canolfannau Plant ac mae Tracey ynhelpu i arwain dadansoddiad llym o’r BRh a’r rhaglenni rhiantu Tri-P a PATHS, cwricilwm seiliedig ar ysgol sydd wedi ei anelu at wellarheolaeth cymdeithasol ac emosiynol. “We talk!
