1. Introduction

• The RFID technology – electronic article surveillance, – electronic toll collection, – factory automation, etc.

• It is increasingly giving much impact on – supply chain management, – logistics, etc.

• In civil engineering, RFID was used – for managing individual construction workers at sites and – for obtaining information on underground structures, – but did not prevail several years ago.

• However, RFID technology can be and should be more utilized in civil engineering.

3. Examples of RFID Utilization in Civil Engineering

• In construction field, RFID technology was used for– stakes for displaying buried objects such as pipes and cables– supervising construction workers at tunnel sites in 1990’s.

• However, due to the high cost, the RFID was not utilized as expected then.

• As AutoID Center was founded at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999, RFID technology started to gain interests among industry people.

• Since 2003, much more attention has been paid to RFID and a number of trials have been made in construction related fields.
