Introduction• RFID stands poised to fundamentally change supply-chain

management, enabling enterprises to realize significant savings to the top and bottom line.

• P & G, which expects to increase after-tax profits by $150 million and realize a working capital increase of $1 billion through adoption of RFID.

Introduction• This paper provides a brief overview of RFID technology with

a focus on how the EPCglobal Network can drive the value of RFID to all parties in the supply chain.

RFID in the Supply Chain 1• One emerging use for the technology is to track valuable

items as they move through physical supply chains.

• Most applications of RFID for tagging and tracking items have been for operations within a single company.

RFID in the Supply Chain 2• To take RFID beyond the confines of a single organization and

create value for the entire supply chain, a few things are needed:1. First, there must be a standardized way of uniquely

identifying items within the supply chain.

2. Second, there must be a standard means of discovering and sharing the data that describes each identified item.

The first requirement is addressed through EPCs.

RFID in the Supply Chain 3• EPCs are essentially the next generation of Universal Product

Codes (UPCs) used in bar, except EPCs have the added benefit of being able to identify products uniquely at the item level.

• The second requirement to extend RFID value across trading partners is a standards-based method to discover and share data about EPCs.

Using the EPCglobal Network to Create Real Value• The following are examples of real-world business problems

that can be solved using the EPCglobal Network:1. Shipping and Receiving2. Product Theft3. Counterfeiting4. Product Recall

How the EPCglobal Network Works

• The registration of this product knowledge by each EPC Information Service into the EPC Discovery Service enables full supply-chain visibility.

The EPCglobal Network and the Evolution of Product Data Sharing• The Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the largest

directories in use today, and handles over billions of queries daily to support Web site lookups and email delivery.

• Some estimates predict that the EPCglobal Network system will need to support hundreds of billions of lookups per day.

• The VeriSign® Advanced Transactional Lookup and Signaling (ATLAS™) infrastructure currently supports multiple VeriSign offerings, including DNS services for .com and .net domains.

Conclusion• Expectations for the efficiencies and cost savings to be gained

from RFID technology and the EPCglobal Network are high—and with good reason.

INTRODUCTION• The case study is representing active research at an

automotive manufacturing plant covering four vehicle programmes with approximately 400 special container types per car line.

• In this particular study, the logistics processes of the entire operation within the manufacturing plant of the OEM are thoroughly investigated to determine the feasibility for use of RFID technologies.

Stillage

THE SUPPLY CHAIN PROCESS SCENARIO• A typical OEM supplier receives the stillages from the

stillage manufacturer so that it can send the automotive parts to the OEM.

• The stillages carrying these parts will be sent to the ‘Cross Docking Centre’ of the OEM by the logistics provider.

• The Cross Docking Centre which is responsible for receiving thousands of these stillages, arriving from possibly hundreds of different suppliers at different times and then sends these stillages to the manufacturing and assembling plants at the OEM.

Process Problem• This business process is problematic for the OEM to maintain

and improve effectively.

Reasons: • One of the reasons for this is the inability to track these

high value stillages in a time efficient and cost effective way. Because the stillages are not always located at their expected storage areas.

• This was put down to many reasons, such as mishandling and misplacement by loaders, truck drivers or warehouse workers, mainly due to the complexity of the process and the number of agents involved.

Page 19: RFID Paper Read Report

Why it need RFID technology• The majority of the processes are manual and there is a

lack of automated mechanisms to verify the deliveries and the stillage handling.

• A typical OEM is losing millions of pounds annually due to the inadequacies of the existing process.

CONCLUSION AND FUTURE WORKS

• The research has investigated some of the ways to track high value stillages within the supply chain of an automotive OEM for the automation of logistics procedures.

• The research output intends to reduce the misplacement and leakage of stillages, which has a significant impact on the quality assurance and management costs of the logistics and manufacturing process.

My Comment

Comment•
