Descendants of William Salisbury of Swansea

I - William Salisbury, the first of this line who came to America from England. He was born in Wales, doubtless in Denbighshire, son of John Salisbury of Llanrhaidr. Wales, 14th Generation. He disposed on May 12, I656 that he was 34 years of age, and if this be true he was born in 1622. He was in Dor¬ chester as early as 1648. He was for a time herdsman of the town cattle. He settled in Milton, formally nart of Dorchester and he signed the agreement regarding the parsonage land May 18, 1664* He removed to Swansea, Mass* as early as 1671* being the first of the name in the town.

A list of the men of Swansea, eight soldiers recorded at Plymouth, includes the name of WILLIAM and JOHN Salisbury. They vrere the first victims of King Phillips war. Both were buried June 24, 1675- John was doubtless the unmar¬ ried son of William.

William married Sussannah, who was admitted to full communion at the Dorchester church. May 7> 1677* and was dismissed to the Milton church Sept. 18, 1681.

"Among the Salisbury families of New England times was a worthy progenitor who bore the name of David, or of Stephan, as some of his descendants have thought, who was recorded to have lived in Gloucester, Rhode Island in 1757; and in Conneticut in 1605, and to have died in Uttica, New York. Although his personal record, as afforded by his descendants is meager, the authenticity of the family genealogy is beyond question.

The family of this Salisbury progenitor emanating from Massachusetts, com¬ prised five sons: (l) John, who was born in Gloucester on July 15, 1757 and died in Canandaigua, New York, on Feb, 18, 1837; the father of a large family. (2) Mamaduke, who was married and resided in Gloucester. (3) Vail, who was a member of the Gloucester Grenadiers in 1792, and spent his life in his native town. (4) William, w j. JOHN SALISBURY: The oldest son, John Salisbury, was married twice, and in 1802 migrated from Gloucester to Canandaigua, taking with him all his family except his two eldest sons, Hiram and John. He married his first- wife, Freelove Herendeen, in Smithfield, R, I, on Dec. 10, 1777; and his second wife, Mary Dean, in Gloucester, on Nov. 2, 1796, Freelove Herendeen was born in Smithfield on No\« 8, 1759? and died in Gloucester on April 26;, 1796, the mother of seven children.

"Chancy Salisbury, a highly respected resident of Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio, who was bom on the farm on which he lives, where he has 78 acres of valuable land, is one of the oldest agriculturists of this section. His birth took place March 10, 1830, and he is a son of WILLIAM and Sylvia (Attrill) Salisbury,

Both parents of Mr, Salisbury were born in New York State, WILLIAM SALISBURY came to Bath Tov/nship in 1827, where he remained a year, assisting settlers to clear their land and begin its cultivation.. He found the country so desirable that he decided to establish here a home of his own and made the long journey back to his native place in order to marry. The young couple bravely started in a be¬ lated April snow storm, but the snow melted before they had covered the distance and they completed the journey to their new home in a wagon.

WILLIAM SALISBURY built a modest log house on his land, having bought 75 acres of the present farm, and then began its clearing and subsequent improvement. At a later date he bought 45 acres on the opposite side of the road. He and his wife lived on this farm during the remainder of their lives, dying honored and esteemed in their community, William Salisbury's death took place April 8, 1868, His wife died Feb, 24, 1867* They had seven children, the three survivors now being JOHN, residing in Wisconsin, aged 79 years; Chancy, who has reached his 77th year; and William, residing in California, who is aged 71 years. Those deceased are Olive, who was the wife of Joseph Manly; Peter, Mary, and Russell,

"WILLIAM S, SALISBURY is numbered among the prominent agriculturists of •Richland County, which has been his home from the time cf his nativity, and he is the owner of a fine landed estate in Willow Township, being a member ox’ one of the honored pioneer families cf that section of the county,

  • He is the son of John Salisbury, who was one of the early settlers cf Willow township and who was born in Summit County, Ohio, May 11, 1828, being reared to the sturdy discipline of the farm and. receiving a common school educa¬ tion.

March 14, 1850, was solemnized the marriage of John Salisbury and Rosanna Willey, the latter having likewise been bom in Summit County May 10, 1828. They remained in that county until 1856 when they came tc Wisconsin and located in Richland County.

Mr. Salisbury purchased land in the southeast quarter of section 35, Township, and there erected his primitive log house in the forest, after

which he set himself vigorously to the task of reclaiming a farm in the midst cf the sylvan wilds. In 1864 he bought land in the southwest quarter of the same section, the same having been entered from the government by Henry Cushman„ He removed to this farm, taking up his abode in the log house which had been erected by Mr. Cushman. In 1883 he erected the substantial frame residence which new adorns the homestead. He attained to distinctive success as a farmer and stock grower, being a man of energy, good judgment and progressive ideas. In 1365 he went forth in defence of the Union, having been a member cf Company D, Eleventh Wisconsin Infantry, in which he was enrolled in February of that year. He pro¬ ceeded to Montgomery, Alabama, and in the following June was taken ill and placed in a hospital. As soon as he had sufficiently recovered he was granted a furlough and returned home, receiving his honorable discharge at Madison, Wisconsin, September 29, 1865, and thereafter passing some time in Ohio recuperating his health. Mr, Salisbury now makes his home with his son, our subject; his wife having died Dec, 10, 1897.

William S. Salisbury, whose name initiates this review, was born on the homestead farm, in Willow township, July 9, 1365, and. he was reared to manhcoc in this township where he has been continuously identified with agricultural pursuits from his youth to the present, his educational advantages having been those afforded in the public schools or his native county.

He is the owner of 80 acres of well improved and most arable land and in addition to general farming and stock growing, he is also prominently identified with the cheese manufacturing industry, in which connection Richland County has gained a high reputation. For about nine years past he was a member of the co¬ operative company organized for the prosecution of this line of enterprise, and in 3.903 hs established a cheese factory of his own, having since conducted and been the owner of the same, and being recognized as one of the leading manufacturers cf high grade American cheese in this section of the state.

He is a citizen, loyal and liberal; is a reliable and enterprising business man, and takes a deep interest in all that tends to conserve the advancement and material and civic prosperity of his native county. In politics he is aligned with the Republican party and he and his wife are members of the Congregational church. November 17, 1897 Mr, Salisbury was united in marriage to Miss Ada L. Hatch, daugnesr of Lester M. Hatch, of whom individual mention is made in this publication. They have two children: Velma Ethel, and Beulah Mabel.”
