Na bẖījai rāgī nāḏī beḏ. Na bẖījai surṯī gi▫ānī jog. Na bẖījai sogī kīṯai roj. Na bẖījai rūpīʼn mālīʼn rang. Na bẖījai ṯirath bẖavi▫ai nang. Na bẖījai ḏāṯīʼn kīṯai punn. Na bẖījai bāhar baiṯẖi▫ā sunn. Na bẖījai bẖeṛ marėh bẖiṛ sūr. Na bẖījai keṯe hovėh ḏẖūṛ. Lekẖā likī▫ai man kai bẖā▫e. Nānak bẖījai sācẖai nā▫e. ||2||

He is not won over by music, songs or the vedas. He is not won over by intuitive wisdom, meditation or Yoga. He is not won over by feeling sad and depressed forever. He is not won over by beauty, wealth and pleasures. He is not won over by wandering naked at sacred shrines. He is not won over by giving donations in charity. He is not won over by living alone in the wilderness. He is not won over by fighting and dying as a warrior in battle. He is not won over by becoming the dust of the masses. The account is written of the loves of the mind. O Nanak, the Lord is won over only by His Name. ||2||

ਏਕ ਰਕਰਸਨੰ ਤ੍ ਸਿਬ ਦੇਿਾ ਦੇਿ ਦੇਿਾ ਤ੍ ਆਤ੍ਮਹ ॥ ਆਤ੍ਮੰ ਸਰੀ ਬਾਸਵਦੇਿਸ੍੍ ਜ ੇਕੋਈ ਜਾਨਰਸ ਭਿੇ ॥

Ėk krisanʼn ṯa sarab ḏevā ḏev ḏevā ṯa āṯmah. Āṯmaʼn sarī bāsavḏaivas▫y je ko▫ī jānas bẖev.

The One Lord is the Divinity of all divinities and he is the Divinity of the soul; if any one knows the mystery of the soul and the Omnipresent Lord.

ਗਾਿਰਹ ਿਾਗ ਭਾਰਤ੍ ਬਹ ੁਬੋਲਰਹ ਇਹ ੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਖੇਲ ॥

Gāvahi rāg bẖāṯ baho bolėh ih manū▫ā kẖelai kẖel.

You sing in so many Ragas and harmonies, and you talk so much, but this mind of yours is only playing a game.

The Opponents Kaal

God assigned Kaal to be the governor of Maya Has power over everything in Maya Has no jurisdiction over Naam, only God himself administers Naam Has 5 guys on his team (his helpers) called the Panj Duth Always in hukam, doing exactly as required

Panj Duths Their job is to give you thoughts They hijack your 5 advisors (eyes, ears, mouth) and use them as they want They cause you to waste your swaas ($capital) in Maya

The Opponents

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧੋ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਰਬਨੁ ਗੁਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਅਫਾਿੁ ॥

Sabẖ jag bāḏẖo kāl ko bin gur kāl afār.

The whole world is bound by death (Kaal) ; without the Guru, death (Kaal) cannot be avoided.

ਇਸੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਚੋਿ ਿਸਰਹ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਿਾ ॥

Is ḏehī anḏar pancẖ cẖor vasėh kām kroḏẖ lobẖ moh ahaʼnkārā.

Within this body dwell the five thieves: sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and egotism.

Pancẖ ḏūṯ racẖ sangaṯ gosat maṯvāro maḏ mā▫i▫o. ||4||

He is entangled in the company and the advice of the five demons, intoxicated by the wine of Maya. ||4||

Mā▫i▫ā mėh kāl ar pancẖ ḏūṯā. ||3||

॥ Cẖiṯ gupaṯ karmėh jān.

The recording scribes of the conscious and the unconscious, Chitr and Gupt, know all actions and karma.

ਆਜੁ ਮੇਿੈ ਮਰਨ ਪਰਗਿੁ ਭਇਆ ਹੈ ਪੇਖੀਅਲੇ ਧਿਮਿਾਓ ॥

Āj merai man pargat bẖa▫i▫ā hai pekẖī▫ale ḏẖaramrā▫o.

Today, it became clear to my mind that the Righteous Judge of Dharma is watching us.

ਧਿਮ ਿਾਇ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਬਰਹ ਸਚਾ ਧਿਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

Ḏẖaram rā▫e no hukam hai bahi sacẖā ḏẖaram bīcẖār.

The Righteous Judge of Dharma, by the Hukam of God's Command, sits and administers True Justice.

Gananṯ savasā bẖaiyān ḏẖarmaʼn.

The Righteous Judge of Dharma is relentless; he counts each and every breath.

The Mind as King

The Mind: –Being a child of God – is supposed to act as a King

–Mind constantly going out the 9 doors and forgets its home

–Kaal + 5 Dhuts – are supposed to be the mind’s servants

–Instead, Kaal + 5 Dhuts are in control constantly distracting the mind, telling it what to do, by preying on the 9 doors

–Atma does the karam of the mind because the mind is too busy in Maya

ਸਗਲ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਅਪਨੈ ਿਸ ਮਾਤ੍ੀ ॥ ਰਗਰਹ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਤ੍ੀ ॥ ਮੁਸਨਹਾਿ ਪੰਚ ਬਿਿਾਿ ੇ॥ ਸੂਨੇ ਨਗਰਿ ਪਿ ੇਿਗਹਾਿ ੇ॥੨॥

Sagal sahelī apnai ras māṯī. Garih apune kī kẖabar na jāṯī. Musanhār pancẖ batvāre. Sūne nagar pare ṯẖag▫hāre. ||2||

All of my companions are intoxicated with their sensory pleasures; they do not know how to guard their own home. The five thieves have plundered them; the thugs descend upon the unguarded village. ||2||

5 Dhuts are Thugs! ਿਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਿੂਪੁ ਜਾਰਤ੍ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਪੰਜੇ ਿਗ ॥ ਏਨੀ ਿਗੀਂ ਜਗੁ ਿਰਗਆ ਰਕਨੈ ਨ ਿਖੀ ਲਜ ॥

Rāj māl rūp jāṯ joban panje ṯẖag. Ėnī ṯẖagīʼn jag ṯẖagi▫ā kinai na rakẖī laj.

Royal power, wealth, beauty, social status and youth are the five thieves. These thieves have plundered the world; no one's honor has been spared.

Ang 1288

ਪੰਚ ਚੋਿ ਰਮਰਲ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਗਿੀਆ ਿਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਰਹਰਿਆ ॥

Pancẖ cẖor mil lāge nagrī▫ā rām nām ḏẖan hiri▫ā.

The five thieves join together and plunder the body-village, stealing the wealth of the Lord's Name.

ਕਹਤ੍ੁ ਕਬੀਿ ਨਿੈ ਘਿ ਮੂਸੇ ਦਸਿੈਂ ਤ੍ਤ੍ੁ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥੨੨॥੭੩॥

Kahaṯ Kabīr navai gẖar mūse ḏasvaiʼn ṯaṯ samā▫ī. ||3||22||73||

Says Kabeer, the nine openings of the body are being plundered; rise up to the Tenth Gate, and discover the true essence. ||3||22||73||

ਮਾਧਿ ੇਰਕਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਭਰਮ ੁ ਐਸਾ ॥ ਜੈਸਾ ਮਾਨੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਤ੍ਸੈਾ ॥੧॥ ਿਹਾਉ ॥ ਨਿਪਰਤ੍ ਏਕ ੁਰਸੰਘਾਸਰਨ ਸੋਇਆ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਭਇਆ ਰਭਖਾਿੀ॥ ਅਛਤ੍ ਿਾਜ ਰਬਛੁਿਤ੍ ਦਖੁੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸ ੋਗਰਤ੍ ਭਈ ਹਮਾਿੀ ॥੨॥

Māḏẖve ki▫ā kahī▫ai bẖaram aisā. Jaisā mānī▫ai ho▫e na ṯaisā. ||1|| rahā▫o. Narpaṯ ek singẖāsan so▫i▫ā supne bẖa▫i▫ā bẖikẖārī. Acẖẖaṯ rāj bicẖẖuraṯ ḏukẖ pā▫i▫ā so gaṯ bẖa▫ī hamārī. ||2||

O Lord, what can I say about such an illusion? Things are not as they seem. ||1||Pause|| It is like the king, who falls asleep upon his throne, and dreams that he is a beggar. His kingdom is intact, but separated from it, he suffers in sorrow. Such is my own condition. ||2||

ਰਜਰਨ ਜਪੁ ਜਰਪਓ ਸਰਤ੍ਗੁਿ ਮਰਤ੍ ਿਾ ਕੇ ॥ ਜਮਕੰਕਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੇਿਕ ਪਗ ਤ੍ਾ ਕੇ ॥

Jin jap japi▫o saṯgur maṯ vā ke. Jamkankar kāl sevak pag ṯā ke.

One who chants the Lord's Chant, attains the Wisdom of the True Guru. The tyrant, the Messenger of Death, becomes a servant at his feet.

ਸਗਲ ਰਸਰਸਰਿ ਕੇ ਪੰਚ ਰਸਕਦਾਿ ॥ ਿਾਮ ਭਗਤ੍ ਕੇ ਪਾਨੀਹਾਿ ॥੧॥ ਿਹਾਉ ॥

Sagal sarisat ke pancẖ sikḏār. Rām bẖagaṯ ke pānīhār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

The five demons are the rulers of the whole world, but they are just water-carriers for the Lord's devotee. ||1||Pause||

ਸੋ ਸੁਿਤ੍ਾਨੁ ਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਿ ਤ੍ਾਨੈ ॥ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤ੍ਾ ਭੀਤ੍ਰਿ ਆਨੈ ॥ ਗਗਨ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਰਹ ਲਸਕਿੁ ਕਿੈ ॥ ਸੋ ਸੁਿਤ੍ਾਨੁ ਛਤ੍ੁ ਰਸਰਿ ਧਿੈ ॥੩॥

So surṯān jo ḏu▫e sar ṯānai. Bāhar jāṯā bẖīṯar ānai. Gagan mandal mėh laskar karai. So surṯān cẖẖaṯar sir ḏẖarai. ||3||

He alone is a sultan and a king, who shoots the two arrows, in his outgoing mind, gathers and assembles his army in the realm of the mind's sky, the Tenth Gate. The canopy of royalty waves over such a sultan. ||3||

Parabẖ ka▫o simrahi sė sarab ke rāje.

Those who remember God are the rulers of all

ਸ ੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਰਜ ਹਉਮ ੈਮਾਿੈ ॥ਗੁਿ ਕ ੈਸਬਰਦ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਿੈ ॥ ਆਰਪ ਤ੍ਿੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤ੍ਾਿੈ ॥੪॥

So jan sācẖā jė ha▫umai mārai. Gur kai sabaḏ pancẖ sangẖāraiĀp ṯarai sagle kul ṯārai. ||4||

Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves. They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||

ਰਸਮਰਿ ਰਸਮਰਿ ਰਸਮਰਿ ਗੁਿੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਸੋਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਜਾਗਾਈ ॥੨੩॥

Simar simar simar gur apunā so▫i▫ā man jāgā▫ī. ||23||

Remembering, remembering, remembering my Guru in meditation, my sleeping mind is awakened. ||23||
