Starting a collection is easier than you may think.

he expression, "One man's junk isanother man's treasure," was nevermore true than in the area of collect-ing. You may be fascinated by dif-

ferent types ol rocks while your best friendis an avid baseball card collector. That'sone of the many fun things about collecting.It reflects your personality and allows youto concentrate on what you're interestedin. Your "treasure" may differ from yourfriend's but you'll both reap the same re-wards-hours of enjoyment and satisfac-tion, pride in your collection and valuableknowledge you can share with others.

Starting a collection is easier tilan youthink. The first step is to decide just whatit is you want to collect. When doing so, besure to ask yourself, "What am I reallyin-terested in?" Don't collect stamps just be-cause your best friends at school are doingit. lf you would rather be collecting erasertops, do it! Don't worry that others maythink it strange or that no one else aroundyou is doing it. Chances are that somebodysomewhere shares your interest. You arenot alone, but even il you were, it doesn'treally matter. Atter all, you might even startsomething new and find yoursell leadingthe way as others start collecting erasertops tool The essential thing is to derivesatisfaction and pleasure from your hobby.

After you have made up your mind as towhat you'd like to collect, start gatheringinformation about it. Where can I find it?What materials if any, will I need to set upmy collection? How much space will I needto display it? How much will it cost? Can I

afford it? lf you cannot answer questions

like lhese to your satisfaction, you may wantto reevaluate your choice and pick some-thing else. For example, if you have limitedspace to work with, collecting large or bulkyitems may not be the best idea; il moneyis a consideration, collecting costly an-tiques would be out ol the question.

As a beginner collectionist it is best tostart off with something that you can obtainlree or at relatively low prices. This will notlessen the value of your collection's per-sonal value because of the effort and in-genuity you may have to put into findingpieces for it. Just think of the satisfactionyou'll feel when, after searching the woodsall day, you find a prize specimen of theleal you needed lor your collection, ormaybe you came up with a novel way ofdisplaying your hat collection. Smalltriumphs like these will make your personaltreasure trove rich in proud memories andself-satisfaction. Soon your collection willseem priceless to you, and you won't wantto part with it for anything.

Acquire pieces for your collection withcare. Avoid falling into the trap of quantityinstead of quality. lt is better to have twoor three perfect pieces or specimens than50 inferior or damaged ones. Every time

you acquire a new "treasure" try to gatherbackground information on it such as his-tory, origin, uses, etc. This detective workcan prove to be just as much fun as col-lecting itself.

Share what you've learned with friends.Chances are they'll be more than inter-ested to know that what they thought wasjust an old tarnished button you found in ajunk shop was actually once a part ol aBritish soldier's uniform during the Revo-lutionary War. Your friends will not only beimpressed by your skill and determinationin piecing together facts as to how it couldhave found its way there, but by yourknowledge of battles fought in your area,also unearthed during your search.

Collecting opens up a whole new world.You can make the past come alive-foryourself and your friends-and add newzest and drama to stale history lessons.Science and biology can take on an addedinterest if you like collecting minerals andinsects. Anything and everything can takeon a fun, lively aspect when seen from acollector's point of view.

The more you know, the more interestingand exciting it will be to continue your col-lection. That's why it's a good idea to learnas much as you can-not only about thespecific objects in your collection but aboutthe general field as well. Being knowl-edgeable about your collection pieces alsomakes it easier to make good deals whenyou are swapping or selling them.

There are several ways to gain infor-mation on your particular field. Visit local

museums, hobby shops, the collections ofmore experienced collectors. Familiarizeyourself with the best by examining andstudying perfect or near-perfect pieces orspecimens. This is the only way you cantruly form the good taste and judgmentneeded to build your own first rate collec-tion.

No matter what you collect, there is al-most sure to be some source in your areathat can help you. lt can be a fellow col-lector or a museum with exhibits pertinentto your field. lf there isn't, you can writeaway to museums or collectors' associa-tions and ask for any booklets, pam-phlets, or other information sources theymay have dealing with your subject.

Books are another good source of infor-mation. Go to your library or book store andsee what they have available. Collectors'clubs are another option. lf there aren't anyin your area, start one yourself. A noticeon the library school bulletin board or asmall ad in the local paper can be yourstarting point. A club is not only a greatway to learn and swap, but also a goodopportuity to make new friends who shareyour interest.

Whether doing it on your own or withfriends, you should develop a system forkeeping records of what you learn and theirsources. Catalogue your collection. Use card in-dexes or a loose-leaf notebook. Type orprint clearly the following information: (1)number of piece; (2) description and dis-tinguishing marks; (3) place and date whenacquired; (4) price paid or swap made, ifany; (5) value (write this in pencil as it maychange with time); (6) history (this can in-clude where it was used, by whom, its pur-pose, environment, etc.); (7) personalremarks.

After you've built up a good collectionand catalogued it, you'll want to display itfor everyone to admire. Before doing sotake a look around and see how other peo-ple have displayed their collections. Notehow pieces were arranged;where they weredisplayed; how important pieces werehighlighted; howthey were labeled, etc. Beguided by what you see but don't be afraidto try new ideas. Remember, this is yourcollection. Let it reflect your personality.

It's all up to you. You can make yourcollection anything you want it to be. Withinterest, enthusiasm, and some hard work,you can turn a pleasant pastime into a chal-lenging and rewarding source of bounty.

As our history OooXs teit us, in 1621 , aftera most bountiful harvest, Governor WilliamBradford, leader of the Pilgrim settlers; pro-claimed that the colony set aside its laborsand give thanks.

There was much to celebrate, but theroad leading up to this great "first thanks-giving" had not been an easy one. Aftertheir arrival in Plymouth during that coldDecember of 1620, the lack of provisions,the cold and disease had taken their toll--with half of the 101 Pilgrims dead. The fu-ture looked bleak for the surviving 51 andthey probably would have also perished,had it not been for their fortunate encounterwith the Wampanoag lndians.

Following their meeting with the lndians,the Pilgrims were assured that they couldsettle in the area, free from harm. A pactwas signed with the chief, Massasoit-marking the beginning of friendly relationsbetween the settlers and the lndians, onethat was to last for years to come.

True to Massasoit's promise, the lndianswere peaceful, Iriendly, and most helpful.One Pilgrim recorded the lollowing; Ihereis now great peace among the lndiansthemselves, and we, lor our part, walk aspeaceably in the woods as in the highwaysof England. We entertain them in ourhomes, and they, as friendly, bestow theirvenison on us.

And, there was one lndian, in particular,who was to be most instrumental in chang-ing the future of the Pilgrims. Tisquantim,whom the settlers came to call Squanto-because he was their guide, teacher, in-terpreter, as well as dear friend.

When still a young brave Squanto hadbeen captured by an English exploring partyand taken to England as a "curiosity." Thereis little information concerning the nineyears he spent in this manner but it is knownthat he was returned to his native shoresin 1614 with Captain John Smith. His free-dom was short-lived, for he was again cap-tured, to be sold as a slave in Spain. Luckilyfor him, he was bought by a kindly groupof friars who treated him kindly and con-

verted him to Christianity. He was finallyable to escape and made his way back toEngland, where he was sent back to Amer-ica with Captain Thomas Derner. He landedat Plymouth about six months before thePilgrims came to those shores.

ln his time away from his homeland hehad been able to learn English, and it wasthis ability that made him particularly help-fulto the Pilgrims as it enabled him to betterexplain the means of survival in the ruggedterrain they had chosen lor their settle-ment. Knowing the lndian customs as hedid, he was also able to give the settlers abetter understanding of their new friendsand thus avoid harmlul mistakes. Realizingthat the settlers would need provisionsagainst the next winter, he showed themhow and where to plant their crops, of whichcorn was to become the most important.

Contrary to many repofis, the lndianswere not merely nomadic tribes. They were,in truth, excellent larmers. Faithfully tillingthe soil, they obtained a great amount oflife-giving food from it. Their farming meth-ods and implements were very primitive,but they farmed and they farmed well.

Recorded accounts of the lndian methodof planting corn seed gave the followingsuggestions: Plant live kernels in one place,then heap up a quantiu of eafth with shellsor fish-then three feet distant, plant asmuch more in succession. With this corn,plant three or four bean seeds. When thebeans grow up, they interlace with the

corn-and they keep the ground free ofweeds.

Corn was an important crop to all thelndian tribes of North, Central, and SouthAmerica. The lndians were able to growjust about every type oI corn known at thattime, including popcorn. Not only did theyknow how to grow it, but they also knewvarious ways of utilizing it in their cook-ery-hominy, succotash, mush, corn-bread, corncakes, tortillas, etc. This know-how they passed on to the settlers.

The Pilgrims could not have found betterteachers when it came to the growing ofcorn, as well as other crops that werestrange and unknown to them-such assquash, wild cucumber, and pompion (laterto be called pumpkin). They also learnedhow to manufacture and use sugar andsyrup from the sap of maple trees; wheregood wild berries and fruits could be foundand how they could be used; herbs of thelorest and meadow were pointed out by thelndians, and these were used in medicinalpotions, as well aslorflavoring. The womenlearned to cook many new food combina-tions, including baked beans, planked shad,roasted clams and pemican, to name a few.

Squanto was also instrumental in intro-ducing the settlers to other lndian settle-ments along the rugged coastline and howto develop trade with them. During thesescouting trips along the coast, the settlers

were also shown the best clam beds, andwhere and when the best fishing was to behad. They were taught how to fish and howto trap wild game, as well as how to pre-serve and cook their finds.

That spring and summer under Squan-to's tutelage was one of great explorationand discovery for the Pilgrims. From a des-perate struggling band of people, theyweretranslormed into a thriving and happy com-munity. Despair of the future was changedinto a confident hope for what was to come.Squanto had shown them many valuablethings that would ensure their well-beingduring the next winter and for years to come.

Governor Bradford recorded the follow-ing information: lndian summer came in ablaze of glory, and it was time to bring inthe crops. Our 20 acres of corn, thanks toSquanto, have done well. Forfish and fowl,we have great abundance. Fresh cod inthe summer. Our bay is full of lobsters andaflordeth variety of other fish. . . . All thespingtime the earth sendeth forth very goodsallet herbs, strawberries, gooseberries,plums of three sorts.

With their life taking such a drastic changefor the better, it was no wonder that thehearts and souls of the Pilgrims were filledwith thanks as they looked upon the bountyof their first successful harvest. God had,indeed, cast His blessings upon them.

But, being stern, harshly disciplined peo-

ple, they had frowned on all gay holidayobservances (particularly Christmas) asmerely nothing more than pagan corrup-tions of Christianity. Therefore, as gratefulas they were, and as happy as they were-they still wondered if this was a time to becelebrated in gaiety.

Some historians are inclined to believethat they were able to overcome their re-serve in this matter through a bit of en-couragement f rom Squanto. TheWampanoag tribe, like many other lndiantribes, had traditionally celebrated the har-vest with a long feasting period. Thus, itmay have been Squanto's suggestion thatthe settlers celebrate-in the spirit ofthankfulness. One and all, they realized thathad it not been lor his knowledge and help,there would not have been the successfulcrops, and without the needed crops, therewould have been nothing to be thankful for.

However, it was brought about, Gover-nor Bradford decreed that the colony wouldlay aside its work and give thanks in a fes-tive manner. The women who prepared andserved the initial "thanksgiving" feast wereonly five in number, all that remained of the18 adult women who had arrived at Plym-outh the previous year. With the help ofabout a dozen young girls who had alsosurvived, the stouthearted women man-aged to serve what turned out to be his-tory's most famous banquet. With thanksto God, and due thanks to Squanto! *

he West is cattle country. ln the bliz-zard belt cattle cannot survive withoutspecial care. This means doctoring inthe summer and feeding hay in the

winter. Most hay is piled lin huge stacks inthe hay fields. ln the high mountains snowkept us out of the fields. We stored hay ina shed in the barnyard.

Since lcould remember, lwanted to havea cow herd of my own. I wanted goodstock-Herefords with rich red coats andclean white faces. These were builders ofthe beef industry in the western rangelands-big, gentle cattle able to stand therigors of long winters-with a litfle help, ofcourse.

When the opportunity came I bought tworegistered brood cows. We brought themhome and put them in a small pasture. Thenext morning I went out to look at my pur-chases. One cow ambled over to where I

was. She gave me a friendly greeting byswabbing my sleeve with her long raspytongue. The other cow ran to the far cornerof the pasture. When I walked in her di-rection she crashed through the fence andstampeded across the sagebrush hill. ln-stead of being gentle, the potential motherof my herd was as wild as a TexasLonghorn in open range days. The onlyway she could be handled was from horse-

back, and even then she tip-toed aroundlike she was walking on eggs.

My plans for being in the cattle businesshad dreams of me standing at the edge ofa meadow filled with contented cows. ln-stead I was only catching glimpses of halfmy cow herd as she ran through the talltimber-as hard to handle as a bar of softsoap in the shower stall. And to complicatelife the wild cow gave birth to a beautifulfemale calflreat foundation stock exceptshe was as wild as her mother. But, cometo think of it, I was a little wild myself-especially when it came to relating to God.I liked the wide open spaces and didn'twant to be owned by anyone.

ln late fall, we worked the skiddish cattlein with the civilized ones and managed toget them into the corral. lt was weaningtime. The five-hundred pound calves wouldbe separated from their mothers. They werebig enough to be on their own, and theirmother's next calf would not have an olderbrother or sister sharing their necessarysupply of mother's milk.

Snow had covered the summer range.Even the spring, where the cattle wateredin summer, was buried under six-foot snowdrifts. The water trickled out in a smallstream fifty yards away.

For a week the calves were kept penned.

All, except one, eagerly waited for the hayI brought each day. That one, carrying mybrand, kept on the far side of the pole cor-ral, not looking for anything except a wayto escape. The day the pen was openedthe wild calf ran to the far side of the field.She walked the fence wanting to get backto the summer range. ln away I didn't blameher. I had spent four winters forty milesaway in town. I had to board there-that'swhere the high school was. I knew what itwas to want to get back to the summerrange. I knew what it was to run free-bemy own boss--do my own thingr-rcr at leastI thought I knew.

Winter came. Snow kept the livestocknear the barnyard. We added a grain sup-plement to the ration of hay. The wild onewould quit the bunch until I left. She didn'tknow that she needed to belong to a herdand that she needed the care of the owner.Rebels and loners in our mountain wilder-ness could not survive the winter.

Where we lived, even the deer movedto the lower valleys. But this unmanage-able calf wanted to escape to the highermountains!

The question came, how could ltame awild calf? The answer was obvious. I hadto change lear into trust and hatred into

affection. But in order to do this I had torope the wild calf,

A blizzard struck. The coming yearlingswere huddled together. I left the barndooropen and they went inside for shelter. ltwas then that I lassoed the wild calf. Shepitched and fought when the rope tightenedaround her neck. She stood on her hindlegs and flung herself to the floor. For aninstant I thought of my own freedom andhow l'd not wanted to be tied by God orman. I could have let her go, but she wouldhave been wilder than ever. I put a halteron her head and tied the lead rope. Shestood trembling with fright. When ltouchedher she bawled for freedom. But a wild calfisn't helped with freedom, and maybe lwasthe same way.

The next three days I spent my sparetime with the heifer. I talked to her gently."l know what it is to be frightened," I said."That's why most things are wild, they justdon't understand." I massaged the tensemuscles on her shoulders until mine ached."You've got to belong." I could have beenspeaking to myself. "You've got someoneyou can trust."

I carried water to her in a bucket. Thefirst day she would not touch it until I movedaway. I offered her ground grain but shewould have nothing to do with it until I forceda handful into her mouth. She had to tasteit as she attempted to spit it out. By thesecond day she timidly ate choice morselsout of my hand and drank water while I

stood beside her.The third morning I took the halter off her

white face and allowed her to go free. Sheran into the meadow. She did not stop withthe other coming yearlings, but disap-peared into the trees behind the hayshed.

At five o'clock the calves had gatheredtor their evening meal, but the timid onewas still missing. I walked through thesnowy woods. Perhaps she had walkedacross the pasture fence where the snowhad drifted it under.

Tracks led toward the watering place nearthe buried spring. Footprints showed onthe hard snowdrift that covered the springitself. That was where I found the heifer.The warmth of the spring had melted thesnow from the underside leaving only ashallow canopy over the ice cave below.

The calf had broken through the crust andwas buried in the cavern by the spring.

I hurried to the barn for a shovel and ahalter. Then I started operation rescue."Don't be a dumb-bell," I said as I carvedsteps to the bottom of the pit. "You don'thave to run away any more."

She trembled from the cold and madean unsuccessful attempt to climb out of thecave. Had I not found her, by morning shemight have frozen to death. "See what hap-pens to wild calves," I said. And I knew ithappened to people too. "Come on, tryagain."

She tested the snow with one foot andthen another. As I tugEed on the rope sheclimbed to the top of the snow. I led her tothe shed and removed the halter.

After I filled the mangers with hay I

climbed out of the hayshed. The calvesjostled one another for the choicest bits ofhay. All were crowded up to the manger-except one. Her white face brushed againstmy arm and her long, rough tongue reachedout to carress me. And I understood, for I

was once a wild calf. *
