SILENT REVUEFROM MORN TO MIDNIGHTGERMANY 1920 / 65min. PGDirected by Karl Heinz MartinStarring Ernst Deutsch, Erna Morena, Roma BahnThe rarest of the rare, and truly more Expressionist than any of its compatriots, FROM MORN TO MIDNIGHT—pioneering theatre impresario Karlheinz Martin’s radical, avant-garde forerunner to the road movie. A bank teller (Ernst Deutsch), annoyed by the monotony of his job and family, attempts to woo a glamourous foreigner by absconding with the bank’s money. When she rejects him, he escapes to the big city, disguising himself as a high roller. Unfortunately, the personification of death, which takes the form of actress Roma Bahn in four different roles has other plans for him. “Undercut in every shot by the dash of punk irreverence,” there’s no bigger silent era discovery than this (Michael Atkinson)! - ALICIA FLETCHERFeaturing live piano by Marilyn Lerner. This season of Silent Revue is sponsored by Hollywood Suite, and co-presented by GoetheTO. WE REALLY LIKE HER!CROSSROADSUSA 2002 / 94 minutes PGDirected by Tamra DavisWritten by Shonda RhimesStarring Britney Spears, Zoe Saldana, Taryn ManningFeaturing pre-show Britney karaoke! This is the story of a girl named Lucy. In this truly underrated vehicle for the legendary Miss Britney Spears, former friends Lucy, Kit and Mimi (Spears, Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning) reunite for a last-minute, post-graduation trip to California. While their initial goal is to get the pregnant Mimi to an audition, the trio ends up reconnecting while on the road, making pit-stops for late-night talks, karaoke, snacks and even a little romance. Crossroads and its star did not deserve the blind hate they got back in 2002 (and often still get today). Directed by Tamra Davis (Billy Madison) and written by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy), the film is an ode to the healing power of pop music and friendship that isn’t afraid to confront issues that continue to affect young women including (content warning): sexual assault and rape, body image, internalized misogyny, and parental abuse. DUMPSTER RACCOONA SUMMER OF VERHOEVENSTARSHIP TROOPERSUSA 1997 / 129min. RDirected by Paul VerhoevenStarring Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris, Rue McLanahanWhen Paul Verhoeven was asked to adapt Heinlein’s sci-fi classic, he set about trying to read it - and found the book to be such fascist trash he tossed it across the room. The result is a vicious lampoon of America’s fascist decline and rising militaristic propaganda....that was so spectacularly misread by its audience that it remains praised (and damned) for its “pro-military” slant. See Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards look Very Beautiful In a Specific Nineties Way and do...well, their very best, bless their hearts. Beautiful people! Ugly bugs! The prediction of the pop-up ad! A whole lot of 90s ultra-violence, and one of the Golden Girls as a ruthless military scientist! - ANTHONY OLIVEIRAFeaturing live drag performance by YOVSKA! Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. “Shot in a woozy, unreal, and dryly comedic style that splits the difference between Spike Jonze and Spike Lee, The Last Black Man in San Francisco slows the world down just enough for you to feel it changing,” writes David Ehrlich of Indiewire.

LUCEUSA 2019 / 109min. 14ADirected by Julis OnahStarring Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim RothA married couple is forced to reckon with their idealized image of their son, adopted from war-torn Eritrea, after an alarming discovery by a devoted high school teacher threatens his status as an all-star student.

GDirected by Alex HolmesMaiden is the story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook in charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World in 1989. Tracy’s inspirational dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up. “A taut, gripping documentary about one young woman’s dream...” writes Moira MacDonald of the Seattle Times.

MIDSOMMARUSA 2019 / 147min. 18ADirected by Ari AsterStarring Florence Pugh, Jack ReynorA couple travels to Sweden to visit a rural hometown’s fabled mid-summer festival.
