France v. Britain• The French navy in route to invade

Britain was destroyed at the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Spain in 1804.

• With invasion out of the question, Napoleon tried to stop Britain by attacking it’s source of wealth, commerce.

• Napoleon closed European ports to British goods.

• Britain responded by blockading European ports.

• The restriction on trade caused shortages of goods and sent prices up.

• With money to be made, European merchants ignored Napoleon’s decree to not trade with Britain, that they turned to smuggling.

Nationalism• As French armies marched across

Europe they brought with them enlightenment ideas and supported governments that eliminated nobility & other titles.

• Serfdom ended and so did manor dues.

• The Napoleonic Code was spread and barriers to industry and trade fell causing economic growth.

• Nationalism helped the French armies feel pride, but this idea of nationalism was also spread to the nations they conquered.

Spain• In 1808, Napoleon replaced the King

of Spain with his brother Joe.• Napoleon also introduced reforms to

undermine the power of the Catholic Church.

• Spaniards remained loyal to their former king & the Catholic Church.

• The brutal repression of the French forces fueled the fire of Spanish Nationalism.

• By using guerrilla warfare, Spanish patriots kept a large number of French forces in Spain meaning that Napoleon had fewer soldiers to use elsewhere.

• Later, the British sent forces to assist the Spanish with fighting the French.

Russia• In 1812, Napoleon invaded

Russia.• His Grand Army had 600,000

men.• To avoid fighting the French, the

Russians retreated East and destroyed everything along the way(crops & villages)

• This left the French with no supplies to capture.

• Napoleon entered Moscow in September, but by October he knew he couldn’t feed his army and turned for home.

France was 1000 miles.• Only about 100,000

survived the retreat.• Starvation and winter killed

500,000 men.• Napoleon rushed back to

Paris, but his reputation was destroyed.
