19th – 22nd  September, 2012 - Towards Health Equity

Background

Millions of years ago it is said that all the lands of our mother earth were joined together, butwith the sands of time, the earth evolved, a phenomenon known as the continental drift, divided the lands of our earth into continents, mostly separated by water.

Fast forwarding through history, geographical distances were gravely increased as mendivided themselves according to color, belief and race. Torn apart by centuries of war andviolence, men stand divided.

Over the Years, it has not been an anecdote in history, but rather the core, that responsiblephysicians saved the day.

The physicians are the superheroes of all time, starting from Hippocrates, not Batman orSuperman nor Spiderman. Medical students are the loyal sidekicks, who are equallycontributing in saving the world before bed time.

IFMSA is by far the best example as to how medical students are contributing in the savingthe world.

The members of the Asia-pacific region, gets to meet each other at the MMs and AMs everyyear, but exclusively during the APRMs. Hundreds of medical students meets at the APRMto obtain valuable medical knowledge, meet new friends, and promote culturalunderstanding between member nations.

This time, the APRM will be held in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The revolutionary city, where blood was shed for the freedom to speak in its mother-tongue, which today marks 21st

February, International Mother Language Day.

Bangladesh Medical Students' Society will host the APRM 2012 at BRAC-CDM, Savar.

This year's theme of the regional meeting will be 'Towards Health Equity.'

Bangladesh is a developing country. As a hardworking nation, the country is in the phasewhere it is on all limbs for development. Due to its ample labor force, Bangladesh isindustrializing at a rapid rate. As any other developed country that came out of the darknessof being a developing country, Bangladesh is cladding itself with industrialization.

Bangladesh was born in the year of 1971, after a bloody and gruesome nine months offighting, being decapitated, raped and tortured. The whole nation rebelled and won its own

independence. A hardworking and a diligent nation, Bangladeshis have not only proven tobe brave and patriotic but a hardworking nation striving to make a better country, a betterBangladesh.

Along with the wind of change that brought industrialization, improvement in the health caresector has been ostensible in this region. A delta in category, Bangladesh is poised with a lotof diseases which still exist, due to insufficient improvement in the healthcare system.

Due to the population blast since its inception, Bangladesh, suffers from a wide spectrum ofdiseases such as diarrhea, tuberculosis, leprosy etc. Though ostensible in the healthcaresystem, control and treatment for infectious diseases has leaped sky high, such as discoveryof Oral Rehydration Therapy, other fields such as a universal model for reducing MMR.

Project Proposal - IFMSA Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting 2012

The condition, though unwanted, gives a wide spectrum of choice for students to work andenhance their experience and skills on community health, reproductive health, and runresearches on combating infectious diseases.

A famous Asian philosopher once said “So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminatethe whole earth.”

Come, let us unite and together build a better future for our great nation that is Asia.

Illuminate Asia!

19th – 22nd  September, 2012 - Towards Health Equity

Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society (BMSS)

The medical students of Bangladesh, dreamed of a nation free of sickness. We realize that

we can do more for people. But there was always a lack of networking among the medicalstudents of Bangladesh. Through formal organization, we can be networked and benefit notonly our communities but also ourselves. It is for this reason that we establish theBangladesh Medical Students’ Society.

The Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society is dedicated to the improvement of health careand health care delivery system as well as medical education, so that health care maybecome more personal and holistic in a world of increasing technology and efficiency. Wedefine health as a positive, dynamic state of physical, mental and social well-being, andtherefore, believe that health care should be oriented toward the achievement of health andnot solely a treatment of disease.

As a developing country we believe that access to health care is a right, not a privilege. Thisimplies equal access to equally standards of health care regardless of economic status, political beliefs, cultural background, geographic position, race, creed, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity, physical handicap, mental handicap orinstitutionalization for criminal, medical or psychiatric reasons. Since resources are limited, they should be allocated so that they equitably promote the public health; and thus toupgrade the integrity of the medical education for the betterment of the country. In allaspects of its function, this society will emphasize integrity, equality, ethics and competencefor medical students in the world.

Objectives

Provide an arena for medical students, to convey their voice to all levels of thegovernment and other relevant stakeholders in the medical educational area.

Give medical students a ground to take initiatives for building a betterBANGLADESH.

Provide a link between medical students from different medical colleges andinternational organizations, for cultural exchange and bridging cooperation betweenthem.

The Society will be a platform for medical students to discuss, formulate policies andconduct workshop on community health, global health, education and science.

The Society will play the role of a medium for professional development of medicalstudents, by involving them in international and national training programs.
