Manager’s Foreword I am delighted to present this year’s annual report which demonstrates the continued hard work and success of all those involved in making Care & Repair an essential part of the community of East Lothian. I am grateful that we continue to be very well supported and although we have had to make some changes in our service offering through the year, we have maintained our focus in providing a quality service to our clients. Both at a national and local level, it is acknowledged that keeping elderly and vulnerable clients safe within their own homes in the heart of local communities is definitely the way forward. Services that can help to prevent health issues arising or help with early interventions to stop crisis points being reached are essential. Care & Repair sits at the centre of this strategy as an organisation which has been providing this service for over 25 years! Working closely with our partners and customers to provide not only what is needed, but wanted too! East Lothian has an aging population and it is important that we do not lose local organisations such as Care & Repair which can make a real difference in enabling people to choose to stay safely with confidence in their community. e help we offer varies depending on clients’ needs, however we are always at the end of a phone and it is that person centred friendly, helpful voice that does make a difference! It is definitely this voice that I want to hear in the future! Bev Jones Care & Repair Manager ANNUAL REPORT 2014

I felt comfortablewith, they were veryfriendly and made

This has been a very busy year for this part of the service with over£440,000 capital works being completed both for the private sector andEast Lothian Housing Association. We have completed a whole range ofworks from wet floor shower adaptations to ramps, stairlifts and extensions. We offer assistance with repairs and house improvements and can projectmanage works or help to find a reputable contractor. We work closely with East LothianCouncil to promote their Trusted Trader scheme which is an excellent way for clients toreview feedback on contractor’s performance and have the opportunity to make commentthemselves.

Statistics

Case StudyA 45 year old gentleman with MS experienced real difficulty showering and moving aroundhis home in his wheelchair. Though an 80% grant was awarded from East Lothian Council, theclient struggled to fund the balance which jeopardised the project. Fortunately we managedto source charitable funding which allowed the work to proceed.

The work, incorporating a wet floor shower, permanent ramp at the front door and internaldoor widening has significantly improved the gentleman’s independence and safety at home.

Home Safety Service

Gardening Service

Care & Repair were very fortunate tocontinue these two fantastic services into2013. The Home Safety Service offeredsafety checks to identify potential risks andhazards which may result in an accident ifleft unattended and the Gardening Serviceoffered a gardening and befriendingservice to help clients clear or maintaintheir gardens and create new friendshipsand support at the same time.

Both valuable services were very popularand assisted over 100 clients, yet despiteour best efforts, unfortunately they werenot able to continue. The popularity anddemand that exists to help people with asmall level of gardening assistance andthe value of preventing accidents hasproved the need for this assistance.

Very well done to both Jeanie Cole andElaine Hill who made such a differencerunning these services – and hopefullywe will find a way to bring this supportback to the people of East Lothian!

The Small Repairs Service really does make a difference tothe lives of the people it assists. For many, managing to findsomeone who they can trust to come into their home anddo a good job at a reasonable price can be very difficult.Care & Repair offers this unique service to older anddisabled people and for so many, it has now become anessential means of support.

Case StudyAn elderly lady who lives alone requested the provision of a small ramp to allow her to access andpark her mobility scooter under a covered shelter. Our Small Repairs Officer, a joiner to trade, assessed the work and safety aspects and decided this would be feasible. He created a woodenramp and delivered it a week later. Our client called to express her gratitude and to state howperfect the ramp is in assisting her to get in and out, she is delighted with it. With no cost forlabour for the service and the materials costing no more than £20, this is just one example of howwe assist our clients to remain independent at home through the use of a well-loved and trustedservice and for very little outlay.

Lighting the way ....This year we widened the opportunity for clients to receive help. Households withouta security light in-situe could receive a free sensor light fitted at no cost through theSmall Repairs Service. Having a security light helps light the way on a dark night andcan offer a sense of peace of mind around callers to the door. Clients respondedenthusiastically to the offer and in no time all 50 lights were snapped up. Thefeedback has been extremely positive, with the security lights making a tangiblebenefit to the lives of our clients, helping them to feel more safe and secure at home.

A Note from the Chair“The Charitable Trust is truly unique and very special. The only one of its kind in Scotland,it was created to support clients of Care & Repair who need repairs or adaptations to theirhome, but do not have funds to meet the necessary cost. Applications are accepted whereno alternative source can be found. Grants awarded are usually small – most less than £1,000.

In order to meet current demands, every penny we spend each year must be raised by theTrustees. Much of our income comes from small donations made by satisfied clients andtheir families, but we are always seeking out new funding streams. We are very grateful to

all our donors this year, and in particular the efforts of students from Preston Lodge School who for the secondyear in a row fundraised on our behalf. Thank you all!” Gil Gray - Chair
