Timezone changes best practices

Purpose

The purpose of this w iki document is to make the timezone related issues are address ed w ith respect to an SAP sys tem. This document explains the diff erent levels of timezone that is set in the SAP

system.

Overview

 At times its needed to adjust the SAP servers timezone w hen there is a daylight savings DST sw itch. During this time sw itch there needs to proper procedure follow ed to c orrect the timezones. SAP sys

and OS (Operating system) should be the same to avoid time differences and errors.

System  Logic

The timezone is set at different levels of an SAP system.

1. Operating Sy stem Time [CPU Clock Settings]

2. Time zone at Client [Transa ction Code STZAC]

3. User time zone [Transa ction Code SU01/SU3]

Changing the sys tem time zone on SAP system should not have any influence on existing data, because the times/dates on database ar e stored w ith a certain time stamp and these are not influenced by

the time zone changes. The sequence and the chronological order of the document will remain the same. In the transaction STZAC you do have the f ollowing tw o time zone input fields:

System Time Zone

User's Default Time Zone

How to check the timezone at different levels

Login to SAP system client

Run the repor t from Tcode SA38 -> TZCUSTHELP

Run the repor t from Tcode SA38 -> RSDBTIME

Run this fu nction module in SE37 -> TZ_SYSTEM_GET_TZONE

Run this repor t fr om Tocde SA 38 -> TZONECHECK

Recommendation

If you w ould like to update your system w ith the newes t time zone data, then I w ould recommend to check note 198411 regularly.

Don't change the settings in STZAC w hen the users are c onnected to the system

The 'System Time Zone' w ill be automatically changed for all clients but for the 'User's Default Time Zone' setting you have to start the transaction STZAC in each specific c lient.

We alw ays r ecommend a dow ntime during the sw itch fr om daylight saving time to winter time to avoid issues during the s o called "double hour".In this period the time does not run constantly and w e

cannot guarantee that the softw are can handle the situation if a point of time comes up tw ice.

One possibility to avoid the dow ntime is the system time setting UTC. Then no daylight saving time sw itch is perf ormed at all and so no dow ntime is needed.
