Scenario 1

• Jay is curious about how fertilizer affects the height of plants. He designs an experiment that uses three different amounts of the same brand of fertilizer on the same kind of plant. He uses 10 grams, 20 grams, and 50 grams of fertilizer with the plants and records the plant height every 3 days for 30 days.

Scenario 2

• Plants need light in order to grow. A gardener conducts an experiment with his tomato plants using different colors of light to see if there is any effect. He plants three beds of plants under different lighting conditions. One bed is exposed to sunlight, while the other two are exposed to green light and blue light, respectively. He waters them each day at the same time with an equal amount of water. At the end of two weeks, he uses a ruler to measure the height of the plants.

Scenario 3• Mike discovered that he has cockroaches living in

his kitchen. He can’t decide if he wants to buy RAID “House and Garden” or RAID “Ultimate Killer”. Both are supposed to be good for killing cockroaches, but one is more expensive than the other. He puts two cockroaches in identical containers that they can’t escape from. One cockroach is sprayed for five seconds with RAID “H & G” and the other one is sprayed for five seconds with RAID “U.K.” The time it takes for the cockroaches to die is timed.
