EMAN 204 Energy Resources The purpose of the paper is to provide an introduction to the energy supply industry. In addition we will look briefly at the demand side: that is how we use energy. We will investigate both conventional energy sources such as fossil fuel supplied power stations, hydro and nuclear power and then the up and coming renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and

ocean energy. The question of energy conversion - how energy is converted from sources to services - will be addressed. The paper will include a brief look at the differences in energy use patterns between developed and developing countries. The paper will concentrate on the technical issues but also include environmental and economic considerations.
EMAN 301 Fluids and Heat Transfer
Fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena play important roles in many industrial and environmental problems. This paper examines the physics of fluid dynamics – how fluids interact with solids in flow situations - and how this can be used to understand heat transfer by convection. Conduction and radiation heat transfer are also addressed, as well as how it all relates to real applications such as pipe-work, flow measurement devices, pumps, compressors and heat exchangers. This paper is fundamental for further work in the areas of industrial process engineering and building energy efficiency.
EMAN 308 Thermoprocesses 2 This paper covers the topics of gas mixtures, psychrometry, air conditioning, compressed air processes, refrigeration and power cycles, combustion, emissions and instrumentation. The aims of the course are that students should be able to correctly apply the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics and the thermodynamic potentials to the solution of energy problems, be able to carry out quantitative and qualitative analysis of thermodynamic processes, and be aware of the relationships between engineering thermodynamics and the design of energy conversion systems. Running through the paper are a number of themes: increasing theoretical knowledge, using analysis tools, understanding the context of applied thermodynamics, developing professional skills, and appreciating the engineering design limitations of energy conversion systems.
EMAN 401 Measurement, Simulation and Control
Simulation and Control provides an introduction to process simulation and control. In this course, we will discuss control theory and application, instrumentation and equipment selection, dynamic simulation and numerical methods for design, operation and control of industrial processes and energy systems.
EMAN 402 Process Optimisation This course focuses on the practical application of energy management in an industrial context. It specifically deals with how to find the optimum balance between energy efficiency, capital costs and other operations issues. It begins with a review of Thermodynamics followed by topics in pinch analysis, compressors, turbines, steam and water, optimisation methods, and combustion heat exchange. It then finishes with a number of case studies in power generation and processing technology. This course is regarded as both difficult and rewarding. The mathematics are not terribly hard but the challenge is in learning how to apply all of the different concepts to real world situations.
EMAN 404 Advanced Energy Resources
The purpose of the paper is to provide an advanced look at the energy supply industry. In addition we will look briefly at the demand side: that is how we use energy. We will investigate both conventional energy sources such as fossil fuel supplied power stations, hydro and nuclear power and then the up and

coming renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and ocean energy. The question of energy conversion - how energy is converted from sources to services - will be addressed. The paper will include a brief look at the differences in energy use patterns between developed and developing countries. The paper will concentrate on the technical issues but also include environmental and economic considerations.
EMAN 405 Energy Practice This paper teaches the practical skills needed to be a professional energy auditor, including how to obtain and analyse site data, identify areas of possible energy cost savings, communicate this information and successfully implement improvements.
In addition to lectures and tutorials, it incorporates site visits and case studies of real industrial or commercial premises. In the past we have completed audits of a local micro brewery, the Dunedin Art Gallery, several schools, water and waster water treatment plants around Dunedin, coffee and tea factories, and several shops. EMAN 410 Energy Policy This paper explores contemporary issues in the energy sector, focusing on the New Zealand context. Public and private sector perspectives on energy supply, pricing, demand-side management, related policy and emerging technologies are examined. These topics are related back to the overarching issue of sustainable development, to which energy utilisation is fundamentally linked.
The course alternates between normal lectures and seminars given by expert guest speakers. These seminars are open to the public.
