Editor’s GREETING

2015 has past so quickly that if it had gone any faster it would have overlapped into the new year that we have just begun. I hope that your holidays were filled with joy and great celebra-tions with family and friends.

As I reflect on the past 12 months and look forward to spring I am filled with positive energy. I enjoy the little bit of down time when

the weather is cold to read, watch a favorite movie for maybe the 12th time or enjoy a bowl of one of my homemade soups or a cup of tea with a friend. It is a good time to organize my house and gather “stuff ” for the garage sale. I have no idea where all this “stuff ” comes from but I am sure that it will be a treasure to a shopper.

This year my mission is to make an effort to get our neighbors to communicate and get to know each other. I will continue to walk the neighborhood with my girlfriends (I am the one with the straw hat) and shouting out a hello if I see you outside.

I try to make this newsletter as inviting and interesting as possible. Donna and I are always looking for stories or information that may be of interest to you. I am proud to announce that Chad McNett from the DeKalb Police Department will be a featured writer beginning this issue. If you have any stories to share please submit them to me for consideration. A picture is worth a thousand words so email me a picture. A sunset, a flower, a bird…..include a little sentence why it is special. A snowman picture would be nice if Mother Nature will provide us the opportunity.

Enough babble from me, just sit back and enjoy this issue. I wish you a healthy, prosperous 2016.

Neighborhood NOTIFICATIONS

2015 Year in ReviewYour elected board has spent hours of their personal time to make sure that BRM is the best that it can be. Our property manager, Dan Pavelich has kept on top of all adminis-trative needs and is a true asset to our HOA.

Below is a list of some of the accomplishments in the past year: - Rill Project- Ponds, Inc. repaired/reconstructed over 300 feet of rill. This project not only increased the flow of water but looks beauti-ful with the river rocks. The HOA had sufficient funds in the reserve account which allowed payment in full for this first step of the rill project.

- Delinquent Fees - Through legal action the HOA has been success-ful and progress has been made in their efforts to collect delinquent fees from non-paying members.

- Budget - Our annual assessments have remained level for the past four years while maintaining a balanced budget. The 2016 budget is a balanced budget.

- Tree Maintenance - A number of distressed/troubled trees were removed and for the first time since planting the ash and oak trees were treated and fertilized. In spring we have four trees scheduled to be planted.

- Construction - Two new homes have been built, one by D. Dor-rance Custom Homes and the other by Sean Kelly Custom Homes, Inc.

- Real Estate - There have been 14 houses sold in 2015. We are proud to welcome our new neighbors.

“It’s a privilege to serve on the HOA Board and live in this commu-nity. We thank all the members for their continued support of our activities.”

Best regards from your HOA Board,Scot Spier, Jeff Thunder, Marshall Dirks, Alexandra Dailey, Dan Steimel, Ralph Tompkins and Rick Madsen.

2016 HOA AssessmentsThank you to all that have paid their 2015 assess-ments in a timely manner. The first installment of the HOA dues was due on January 1, 2016. All homeowners should have received their coupon booklets. Contact Dan Pavelich If you have not received your booklet or would like to set up auto withdrawal. Payments are due the first of January, April, July and October.

Be on the Lookout...Help keep our community beautiful and safe! If you witness a viola-tion of the HOA Rules, which are available on our website, you are encouraged to contact our property manager, Dan Pavelich. If you see any suspicious individuals or see questionable activity, please do not hesitate to call the DeKalb Police Department.

Stepping up to END HUNGER

Feed’em Soup, now located at 251 East Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, is a local non-profit organization dedicated to help struggling neighbors provide healthy fresh meals

for their families.

Those wishing to learn more, volunteer or donate can visit www.FeedEmSoup.org or contact Derek Gibbs, Executive Director at e: DGibbs@FeedEmSoup,org or P: 815-310-0903. For CLOSET infor-mation contact Derek Gibbs.

GROCERY CO-OPFeed’em Soup is proud to now offer a grocery co-op as both a service

to our community and a fundraiser for our organization! How it works is simple - we purchase items in BULK from a national restaurant supply company and have them delivered right to our door. Then we pack your basket full of fresh produce, breads, pastas, rice, spices, herbs and other items! You subscribe online and then on your designated day pick it up right HERE and SAVE!

Get your baskets home and create delicious dinners for your family! This is a great way to eat more fruits and veggies at affordable prices and save time at the grocery store. Proceeds are put toward our mis-sion of feeding those in need!

Are you interested in helping organize a Bridges of Rivermist food drive?

Hunger is not just during the holiday season it affects all ages every day. DeKalb and our surrounding com-munities are fortunate enough to have resources for our local com-munity in need. These resources also make it easier for us to do our part in sharing with those less fortunate.

COMMUNITY PASTA AND CAKE MIX DRIVE

April 2nd and April 4thHunger is year round. Once the holiday celebrations are gone we forget. Alexandra has arranged to have a boxed pasta and cake mix drive to benefit Feed’em Soup. These are items that can be put to good use at their diner. Simply put your donation on your front porch before noon on Saturday, April 2nd or bring with you to the Open Board Meeting on April 4th. If you have questions email Al-exandra Dailey at [email protected] and put BRM April Food Drive in the subject line.

Bridges of Rivermist REVIEW 7Winter 2016

DeKalb POLICE BEATHappy 2016 from all of us at the DeKalb Police Department! As your neighbors and community partners, we appreciate the opportunity to reach out to you whenever we can. With the New Year upon us, it is a good time to reflect on recent events and think about things to come. Our police department has been very active in the community this past year. We have enjoyed

spending time with people from all walks of life at various picnics, school events, community festivals, and other activities around DeKalb. It is always a pleasure to meet people as we’re out and about.

Most recently, we participated in a couple different programs for children during the month of December. We partnered with our Fire Department friends to play basketball against the staff at Clinton Rosette and Huntley Middle Schools in a Toys for Tots fundraiser. We are happy to say we raised lots of money for that program, but lost the game. There’s always next year! Our second Christmas program is the Heroes and Helpers program at Target. The children are the Heroes and the police are their Helpers. This year we raised enough money to invite 75 children out to Target so they could shop with a cop. This is one of our favorite events of the year. Smiles are every-where, Santa stops by, cookies and treats are overflowing. It’s a great way to spend time with some deserving kids and their families.

As we look forward, we want to remind you of some ways you can be a good neighbor. These things are easy to do and can really make a difference. • If you live near a senior citizen, take time out to call or check on that person throughout the year, but especially during the harsh winter months. They will appreciate the company and may need assistance from time to time. • If you see something suspicious, say something. Call the police! Too often we talk ourselves out of getting involved in a situation because we think it’s none of our business. You may see strange vehicles in your neighborhood, solicitors going door to door without permits, delivery drivers that look out of place, anything that doesn’t seem right. If you see something that you feel isn’t right, call us. You can use our iWatchDeKalb app on your smart phone to report things anonymously too. Find it in the Apple Store or Google Play. It’s free!• If you are having a package delivered and you won’t be home, con-sider having it delivered to a trusted neighbor’s house. You can then retrieve the package later. Or have it delivered to your back door. This will make you less of a target for theft by opportunists who may see that package sitting on your front step all day.• Unused medications – In case you did not know, we now have a drop box in our lobby at 700 W. Lincoln Highway where you can deposit old, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Help keep these products out of the landfills and out of the hands of kids and other adults who shouldn’t have them. Use this drop box 24/7, when it’s convenient for you! No liquids or sharps please.

We look forward to our next article where we will talk about scams and topics that crop up every spring when the weather turns nice. Enjoy the rest of the winter. We look forward to warmer weather.

Your friends and neighbors at the DeKalb Police Department.Chad McNett – Community Relations Officer

Community CONCERNSWhat to Recycle in DeKalb, IL ~ Submitted by: Donna BorthwickPlease place all recyclables in your recycling container before placing them at the curb.METALOnly recycle the accepted metals here: Keep all other metals out of the bin. They’re not recyclable and ruin the whole batch.Aluminum (i.e.: pop, beer) Steel (i.e.: soups,

vegetables/fruits, sauces) Tin (i.e.: tuna, cat food)

GLASSBefore recycling, Reuse as much as you can as often as you can. All Types and Colors are ACCEPTED!

PAPERThe following common paper items are recyclable:Newspapers, Cardboard** and White paper **Sorry, milk & juice cartons recycling is not yet available in our area of DeKalbYour municipality/hauler may accept other types of paper. PLASTICOnly recycle the accepted numbers you see here: 1 2 3 4 5 6 and 7 Keep all other plastics out of the bin. They’re not recyclable and ruin the whole batch.

More about recycling- Did you know?

Many people assume that pizza box-es are recyclable. In fact, most boxes have recycling symbols on them and are traditionally made from corru-gated cardboard. They are, in and of themselves, recyclable.

However, what make parts of them non-recyclable is the hot, tasty treat that comes inside them, specifi-cally, the grease and cheese from pizza that soil the cardboard. So there you have it, pizza boxes that are tarnished with food, or any paper product that is stained with grease or food, are not recyclable - unless you remove the tainted portions.

What to Do? The easiest remedy for this problem is to cut or tear out the soiled portions of your pizza boxes and trash them. For example, you can tear the top of the box off, recycle that and throw away the bottom part containing the grease. If the entire box is grease-free, the whole box can be recycled with a guilt-free conscience.

Also, our local waste hauler doesn’t accept foamed polystyrene. Foamed polystyrene, sometimes referred to generically by the brand name Styrofoam, is marked as plastic number 6 on items like foam cups and take-out containers. It has gained a notoriously bad envi-ronmental reputation because very few recycling programs accept it and it can sit in a landfill for centuries.

From My Kitchen TO YOURSSubmitted by Alexandra Dailey courtesy of Dina

This is a recipe that is easy, delicious and always a crowd pleaser. It is one of those dishes that you use some of this, some of that and done. Dina my daughter’s mother-in-law makes it every time we have a family gathering. There are never any leftovers to share.

BARI BAKED PASTAPasta Sauce- Use your favorite homemade sauce or a jar1lb. pasta- Any variety will do but Penna is really good. Cook as usual. 6 hardboiled eggs-cut up 1/2 lb. ham diced 1/2 lb. salami diced 1/2 lb. mortadella diced 12oz. bag of shredded mozzarella cheese- You can substitute low fat *Peas (frozen or canned) optional Mix all ingredients in a large bowl then pour into baking pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until completely warmed and cheese has melted. You can sprinkle a little more cheese on top if desired. Enjoy.

Winter Safety SURVIVALWarning to Parents – Stay safe…stay off the ice!!!

The weather has been mild so safety regard-ing ice on the pond is not on our minds. However, the temperature can change in the blink of an eye and bring with it snow and ice. There is no way to know how thick the ice is and how deep the water is underneath. It looks inviting but the risk is too great. If you see someone heading toward the ice

please warn them of the potential danger. We ask our residents, dog walkers and children to avoid injury or worse by staying off the ice. If someone falls in: Call 911 immediately.

As you wait for help to arrive:PREACH- Shout to the victim to encourage them to fight to survive and reassure them that help is on the way. REACH- If you can safely reach the victim from shore, extend an object such as a rope, ladder, or jumper cables to the victim. If the person starts to pull you in, release your grip on the object and start over. THROW- Toss one end of a rope or something that will float to the victim. Have them tie the rope around themselves before they are too weakened by the cold to grasp it.

NEEDED- Recipes that are family favorites. Email to [email protected] with BRM Recipe in the subject line. Include a brief story about your favorite dish and a picture if available. It may be included in the next issue.

Celebrating Mardi GrasTuesday, February 9th

Technically the season is called Carnival, begins on Janurary 6th with the Feast of the Epiphany. The final celebration day is called Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday”. It is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

Rex, the King of Carni-val, selected the Mardi Gras colors and assigned meaning to them in 1892. Purple Stands for Justice. Green

for faith. Gold for Power.

Home SAFETY SUGGESTIONSTRAVEL SAFELYKeep your travel details private from social media until you are back from your trip. If you are leaving for an extended period of time be sure your neighbor or some responsible individual knows you are gone. Provide them with your contact information in the event that you need to be reached during an emergency. Make arrangements for your mail and newspapers. Last but not least, enjoy your vacation or seasonal getaway.

Reminder: If you have a fire hydrant near your house you may want to keep it free of snow during the winter.

Critter CORNERAs the weather becomes cold and snowy, please continue to pick up your pet waste. There is nothing worse than poop blossoms in snow.

Pet Waste Facts!Dog waste is not only unsightly but unhealthy. Dog waste can transmit bacteria and viruses including, tapeworm, roundworm, E. Coli, Pravo and more. It can attract mice, parasites and other unwanted pests. Feces deposited in yards, sidewalks and fields will likely runoff into nearby ponds, rivers and even

into groundwater. We thank all of our pet owners that have been dili-gent in picking up after their pets. Simply said: PUP, pick up poop.
