    1 Introduction

This guide explains how to install and set up AVEVA Review on a workstation running the

    Microsoft Windows operating systems.

This guide assumes the user is familiar with the concepts of folder/file hierarchies for storing

data on disks and with basic Windows terminology and commands. If the user is not, it will

also need to refer to the operating system documentation while the user does the

    installation.

    1.1 Document Conventions

In this document, {installpath} means 'the path name where Review 12.2 is installed'.

So, for example, if the user has installed the copy of Review in C:\AVEVA\Review12.2, then

    the sentence:

"As an example, if you want to run Review with the stab.rvm provided in

    {installpath}\models"

    should be read as

"As an example, if you want to run Review with the stab.rvm provided in

    C:\AVEVA\Review12.2\models "

    2.1.1 Graphics Cards

Review uses the OpenGL standard for its 3D graphics. For best results, a high performance

3D graphics card with an overlay plane is strongly recommended. It is also possible to run

with a lower standard of 3D performance on some 2D graphics cards.

Due to the continually and rapidly changing availability of hardware accelerated OpenGL

Graphics Cards, an up to date list of supported graphics cards cannot be included in this

    document.

However, the AVEVA Web site includes a current list of both tested and supported graphics

cards available. Please contact the support centre for details.

Other graphics cards that fully support the OpenGL standard should also work, but AVEVA

cannot offer assistance in configuring these. The user may also find some problems, for

example when picking items or using some of the special texturing functionality.

A card with overlay planes is strongly recommended: in this case, Review should be set up

    using the menu option:

Tools > Options > Preferences > Feedback Rendering

Tick the check box for Enable Overlay Planes

If overlay planes are not enabled, functions such as locator handles will use XOR graphicsinstead of Overlay Planes, with a loss of performance and quality.

Many graphics cards support dual displays: these should pose no particular problem if set

up in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions.

    2.1.2 Hardware Dependent Differences

Stereo graphics are available only with appropriate graphics cards and displays.Stereo images will appear to flicker if the display is not capable of 120 Hz refresh. Seenote below about driver set-up.

Multi-screen display features are available only with the nVidia FX3000G GraphicsCard. The cards should be set up in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions.

    2.1.3 Graphics Card Driver Set-up

The latest advice on graphics card driver set-up is also on the AVEVA web-site.

There are particular points to note when running Review, especially with stereo graphics.

The Stereo option requires suitable graphics hardware and correct driver settings, which

vary between manufacturers. It has been designed to work on suitable nVidia graphics

cards and uses Quad Buffering. Some other graphics cards claim to be Stereo compatible

but fail to work correctly with Review. Cards shown on AVEVA's web page as supporting

    Stereo have been tested.

For stereo graphics using the nVidia driver, the settings required are:

Network TCP/IP Protocol and related components.

    Other CD /DVD drive

    2-3 button Scroll mouse

    SpaceNavigator input device

Open GL Settings > Additional Open GL Properties menu.

Enable Stereo on Open GL - use on-board DIN connector

Enable Overlay in Open GL - color indexed overlays (8bpp)

Failure to set these options correctly could result in Stereo graphics failing to work or the

    Stereooption being greyed-out.

2.2 Software and Conf igurat ions

Supported Operating System (refer to Hardware).

Microsoft DirectX Version 9C (Runtime) (supplied separately on the DVD).

    AVEVA Licensing System

MS Office Professional 2003 or 2007.

    Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.

Adobe Reader 8 or above to view PDF files exported from Review.

Updated versions of the Microsoft components above may become available from time to

time. Review should continue to work with these: please refer to the AVEVA support web-

    site for the latest recommendations.

    2.3 Language Support

Review can in general support any character set supported by PDMS. By default, PDMS

projects can use any language whose characters are contained within the Latin-1 character

set. However, it can also support other character sets: at the time of writing these are:

    Latin-2 Latin-Cyrillic

Far Eastern (Chinese, Japanese & Korean)

PDMS projects need to be set up correctly to work with character sets other than Latin-1.

For details, please refer to the AVEVA Software Installation Guide.

Please note that the PDMS Export function will by default export data for Review in the

correct format only for Latin-1. For other languages, it is necessary to use the command

EXPORT ENCODING UTFEight to set Unicode (UTF-8) encoding. For details, please refer

to the AVEVA DESIGN Reference Manual - Utilities.

4.2 Using Review from a Command Prompt WindowIn a Command Prompt window, run the batch file Review.bat in {installpath} with the

    appropriate arguments e.g:

    {installpath}\review -m {ins tallpath}\models\stab.rvm

(The user may copy Review.batelsewhere on the file system, as long as it lies in the PATH,

because the installation directory {installpath}\review12.2is stored inside Review.bat).

Review.bat sets up all the environment variables needed by the Review program. It does

this by calling {installpath}\review_evars.bat, which sets up the following environment

    variables:

    4.3 Accessing Remote Data

Review can access remote data through ODBC using AVEVA's QUERY product. The user

6 Configure Review for Network Access

Applications that run across a local network require the proper permission to do so and as

such authorisation must be added on the client machine to grant such permission.

Note: Changing security policies requires administrative privileges on the machine being

    configured.

    6.1 How Policies are Evaluated

.NET assemblies may be digitally signed with a key which can be used to evaluate its

authenticity and discover its point of origin (e.g. AVEVA).

AVEVA Review makes use of this signing and comprises of two keys:

AVEVA (Component is produced by AVEVA)

Infragistics (A third party suite of rich UI controls used by Review)

Using these keys, security policies can be added to authorise any assembly signed with a

particular key to have unrestricted access to local resources (network, disk, etc.).

This means that no matter where the product is installed, as long as it is correctly signed it

will be authorised to run across the network.

    6.2 Configure Database Access
