FROM MY HOUSE
TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be imple-
menting a vocations promotion initiative entitled “Called
by Name.” This Program, which has been recommended by
the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Vocations, invites men, 16
years of age or older, to consider a vocation as a priest.
Until now, the Archdiocese has relied primarily on the par-
ish priests and Catholic high school priests to recommend
young men for the priesthood. Looking back on my own
vocation, it was my school priest who asked me if I had
ever considered the possibility of becoming a priest. Many
priests would have had a similar experience, that is, a priest
reaching out and asking the vocation question. With this
new initiative, in addition to the priests still asking the
question, the laity will be asked to identify young men
whom they think would “make a good priest.”
Next weekend you will be encouraged to consider
who in our midst might serve well as a priest and to submit
their names to me. There is belief that there are many good
prospective priests simply waiting to be asked. Upon re-
ceiving the names from our parishioners, I will be asking
some parishioners to review the names submitted and make
recommendations to me. I will then send a letter to those
recommended to me, letting them know the good news that
someone has perceived that they possess the qualities
needed in future priests and perhaps they might have a vo-
cation to the sacred priesthood. After my letter is sent, a
follow-up telephone call will be made to see if the young
man has any questions or interest in the possibility of pur-
suing a call to the priesthood. Eventually, names will be
sent to Father Stephen DeLacy, Director of Vocations to
the Diocesan Priesthood and then after some additional dis-
cernment, one of our auxiliary Bishops will call our young
men to see if they might be interested in hearing more
about a vocation to the priesthood.
Realizing that this Initiative is going out across the
Archdiocese, I am personally excited and I believe that
Called By Name has great potential in calling forth voca-
tions to the priesthood both here at St. Richard and
throughout the Archdiocese. Recognizing the great need for
priests to serve our Church, and believing that there are
indeed men being called by God here within our midst, I
thank our parishioners for doing their part in assisting in the
calling forth of men to serve as priests!
God Love Ya!

Prayer for Veterans Help us, dear God, to see your face
in every Veteran we encounter.
Guide us as we imagine new ways
to support Veterans and their families.
Bring healing and peace to all who have been wounded
physically, mentally and spiritually during wartime.
Help us bring your saving grace
to heal the invisible wounds of war.
We ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
(prayer obtained from Archdiocese of Washington DC website)
The annual observance of Veterans Day in the United States on November 11th has it roots in the the armistice that ended World War I hostilities in 1918. The armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed thereafter that November 11 be observed as "Armistice Day." In 1954, Congress passed legislation that renamed the federal
holiday "Veterans Day," in recognition of the service of veterans of all U.S. Wars
Servants of Church and Country
Each year on November 11, we observe Veterans Day and remember all those who have served our country in times of war. Among those veterans are our military chaplains. Five military chaplains, all of them Catholics, have received the Medal of Honor since the Civil War. Two of them are on the path to sainthood as their stories of bravery have touched people the world over. Their example inspires a new generation of men to be chaplains as well. Four Catholic military chaplains have also been recognized for bravery in the line of duty withUnited States Navy ships named in their honor. In 2013, the USCCB Media Blog featured a series of posts about past, current and future chaplains, plus the extraordinary history of Catholics priests as Medal of Honor recipients. (information obtained
from USCCB website.)
For all those who have served in the military and their families, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE
• Why is it difficult for me to give all that I have? • When is less actually more?
WE
THANK
YOU!
A Word from
Pope Francis
We need to take up an an-
cient lesson, found in dif-
ferent religious traditions
and also in the Bible. It is
the conviction that “less is more.” A constant flood of
new consumer goods can baffle the heart and prevent
us from cherishing each thing and each moment. To
be serenely present to each reality, however small it
may be, opens us to much greater horizons of under-
standing and personal fulfilment. Christian spiritual-
ity proposes a growth marked by moderation and the
capacity to be happy with little. It is a return to that
simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate the
small things, to be grateful for the opportunities
which life affords us, to be spiritually detached from
what we possess, and not to succumb to sadness for
what we lack.
