The Reverend Dr. Arthur R. White

The Rev. Dr. Arthur R. White was born July 4, 1948, in the segregated South in Roanoke, LA to the late Vandy Mitchell White and Geraldine Joubert. He is the eldest of five children. He was told by elders in the family and others there was a mark on his life. At the age of 16, Arthur rededicated his life to the Lord. He later stepped away from his career pursuit as a Medical Technologists for a mission field assignment as a missionary. He found out Missional assignments are not self chosen but God chosen. In his first year of college, while matriculating at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA he received a notice through a spiritual encounter that his Missional life’s work would be Preaching. In March 1968 this preaching call and assignment was confirmed by the Lord in an unforgettable manner. Every since that day, by the Lord’s own arrangements, he has always had a place to preach. This grace upon him remained following graduation from McNeese and matriculation to Virginia Union School of Theology in Richmond, VA. The Lord always arranged for him a place to preach. While a senior at STVU, Dr. White was called to assume the pastorate of Calvary Baptist Church, Danville, VA. The Lord honored him and humbled him as He gave him the assignment to shepherd His people (Jeremiah 3:15). While in Danville, the mission centeredness, community mindedness, church relatedness to ecclesiastical partnerships in local, state, and national settings would come to define his pastorate. It has strongly undergirded his present assignment as Pastor of The Christ Community Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA for the last 38 years. The Lord has given him opportunities to serve in leading positions at the local, state, and national levels within Baptist denominational life. At these levels, he served memorably as he sought to please God. Consumed by the mission of God given to the church for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ in all the world, Dr. White entered the Doctor of Ministry program at Biblical Seminary in Hatfield, PA. His area of ministry focus for his D. Min project was Missional Leadership. On June 25, 2011, he earned his doctorate degree achieving a lifelong academic pursuit. One of the graces from the Lord in the life of this Preacher was the Lord arranging a meeting between him and Thelma Loretta Wilson who was at that time a student at Virginia Union University. This meeting in 1972 never ended because soon after they were married and have been married for 47 years, with three daughters, two former sons-in-laws and four grandchildren. At present, Dr. Arthur White has been preaching for fifty-one years and pastoring for forty-six and a half years. Dr. White is consumed these days with finishing his course in his present pastorate at Christ Community, helping others to faith and keeping the faith, thanking God for and loving his family more, and patiently waiting for the Chief Shepherd because he wants to receive from the Chief Shepherd the crown of glory (I Peter 5:4).

Kingdomtide”

…”Jesus went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God. He said, The time has come! God’s kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the good news!” Mark 1:14-15 (CEV)

SEASON COLOR: Green, symbolizing growth in Christ and growth in the life of the church.

The season of Kingdomtide is the newest of all of the seasons of the Christian Calendar, dating back to the late 1930’s. Kingdomtide is observed in the autumn period of the year, the time between the ending of Pentecost and the beginning of Advent. The Kingdomtide season gives time to focus our attention to the Eternal Presence of Christ and His kingship, with the parallel emphasis upon man’s stewardship. It also celebrates Christ as King and Sovereign of the world, emphasizing God’s dominion over all of creation. God’s kingdom expresses His Lordship over His people, the world and where man’s challenges are in our daily lives and every area of our existence.

This time of the year is also known as Ordinary Time, which comes from the word “ordinal” which means counted time from the last Sunday in August (August 25) continuing through to Advent – the first Sunday in December (December 1).

From the

You, or the person that you are sitting next to probably knows someone with cancer. In 2016, there were 40,322 new cases of cancer in Virginia alone. That same year, there were 15,027 people who died of cancer. For every 100,000 people in Virginia, 156 died of cancer. As the American Cancer Society continues to study trends in cancer, they are finding that the risk of cancer in African American individuals is higher than in non-Hispanic whites. The most common cancers are prostate, lung and colon cancers in men and breast, lung and colon cancers in women. Colon cancer is highly preventable with regular screening, but statistics show that the screening rate among African Americans is quite low. Take these facts into consideration: 1. There is a higher incidence of colon cancer among African Americans than any other racial group; 2. African Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with young onset colon cancer; 3. African Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage colon cancer; and 4. The death rate from cancer is 17 percent higher in African Americans than in whites. The good news is that the gap of higher incidence and mortality rates among African Americans and whites is beginning to narrow. This is likely due to increased awareness, better health habits and more access to health care (thanks to the Affordable Care Act). Here are some tips to prevent cancer and keep you healthy, regardless of race or ethnicity: Have health insurance. Prevention and ear ly detection is only possible through the par tnership of you, your primary care physician, specialists, and in-network healthcare facilities. Annual check-ups are important. Talk to your doctor about cancer prevention and appropr iate screenings that will detect cancer early. Colonoscopies, mammograms and pap smears are just a few examples of cancer screenings that can save lives. Create healthy lifestyle habits. Maintaining a normal weight, avoiding alcohol, quitting smoking, getting regular exercise, and eating a high-fiber and low-fat diet will prevent chronic conditions like heart disease, hypertension and cancer. Cancer has wreaked havoc with our bodies and with our emotions; but it is so very important to remember what cancer cannot do; cancer is limited. “Cancer cannot cripple love, cannot shatter hope, cannot corral faith, cannot eat away peace and cannot kill friendship, It cannot shut out memories, It cannot silence courage, It cannot invade the soul, It cannot reduce eternal life, It cannot quench the spirit and It cannot lessen the power of resurrection” (author unknown).

Blessings, Stephanie Collins, RN, JD Parish Nurse
