LOOKING TO ADD AN EXOTIC FLAIR

TO YOUR RECORDING MIX?

Maybe one that’s more like an audio collage? One that’s can be affectionately called a beautiful sonic environment?

Well today, I’m going to teach about two ways to accomplish such a feat…

… so let’s compare and contrast Algorithmic and

Convoluted reverb, shall we?

Page 3: Reverb

REVERB IS ANOTHER WAY TO GUIDE ALISTENER’S FOCUS!

Now before we go into the two types of reverb, let’s talk

about the Dry/Wet control.

If we put a reverb in a return track and that parallel effect signal flow…

…the signal flow will be 100% Wet.

Page 4: Reverb

100% Wet

Meaning that, only the reverb’s signal is coming out of that and coming back into the aux track.

(The dry track, or 0%Wet, is controlled by the individual channel

strips)

Front to Back Control

Keep in mind that the wetter a signal is, the further away it seems in the mix.

So in turn, the drier the signal, the closer it will seem to the listener as well.

*Remember, its all about focusing your listener’s attention, okay?

Now let’s talk about those Algorithmic reverbs

• This type of reverb is created from a kind of formula.

• Like a Synthesizer in that way, creating the impression of a space with an algorithm/ mathematical representation

• More opportunities to manipulate the sound of the the space than convoluted

• Won’t sound quite as real because its not a real recording

Here’s an example of a standard Algorithmic reverb plug-in set up

Delays the entire Start of the reverb

Changes locationOf early reflections

Controls size of the space you’re in

Now let’s talk about those Algorithmic reverbs

• This type of reverb is like a sampler.• It’s a recorded sound of a real space

and we are applying it to your DAW.• -Going to sound more like a real

space, because it actually is a recording of a real space.

Impulse responses in very exotics spaces

So try things out and see where it

takes you!

A little trial and error and you never know what your mix could become!

Thanks for reading!

I feel I was able to include the most important aspects of the reverb EQ

facts and figures so that anyone who reads this could easily get more out of their mix. Still trying to figure out

powerpoints but you gotta start somewhere. Yay Coursera!
