Teaching Our Tails to Wag
The Summer we moved to Pell City, after a trip to the Animal Shelter with Club 456, we added to our family a cute little terrier mix named Clara (like Laura “with a C”). As
dogs are known to do, she greets us when we enter the house. But, we’ve noticed, she greets us differently. Maybe this is a dog thing. One person may get an over enthusiastic dog jumping up at them and even a bit of a tinkle on the floor. Another just gets barked at. One person may get what amounts to a dog’s shrug of the shoulders, like, “oh, them again”. And then one, we’ll call her Shelly, gets greeted with a wildly wagging tail, a cuddle, and a good growl for anyone who comes near. Oh to be Shelly. Clara doesn’t know this, but some of us not named Shelly would, every once in a while, like to be greeted with a wild tail wag and a dog ready to jump up in our lap. If only Clara could teach her tail to wag when she welcomed everyone into the house. But, she’s not wired for that. People aren’t dogs and can, with a little intention, teach their tails to wag. For instance, those regular in worship get used to seeing, and speaking to, their worship neighbors. They catch up a bit, let the other know when they’re missed, and are genuinely glad to see them in worship. But a guest to their section or worship service may sometimes get, well, our form of a shrug of the shoulders, not intentionally, but they do. As we lead up to Easter, I challenge everyone to teach your greeting tails to wag a little, to notice ones sitting near, to welcome someone with enthusiasm you might not have before, and, maybe even, to invite someone to worship with you next week. Do it because you remember how God welcomed you home.

Because you give, The United Methodist Committee on
Relief, UMCOR, is prepared to act reaching children, families and communities who have experienced devastation

do, it’s something “we” do.

Homeless Breakfast & Laundry Ministry April 7th
Our church is working with Highlands UMC in Birmingham in their homeless ministry. They
provide breakfast daily for the homeless people in the Five Points area, and they also provide laundry facilities for the homeless. We will be cooking breakfast there on Saturday,
April 7th. We are also collecting laundry pods to take to them for use by the homeless. Contact Eric Hicks
at [email protected] if you’d like to help cook and/or serve. Turn in laundry pods at the church office.

Summer Mission Trip Deposit Due June 17-23 our youth are going on a mission trip to Baton Rouge, LA with Revive 225 (a ministry of FUMC of Baton
Rouge) The main area of focus is a three-mile radius around First United Methodist Church, which is located in the heart
of downtown Baton Rouge. Work could include anything from roofing, painting, building ramps, and repairing walls.
All depending on the needs of the homeowner.
Chaperones Needed: As always, a youth trip cannot happen without adults to help chaperone. We need adults with all kinds of different gifts:
bus drivers, road navigators (because let’s be honest, neither of these are Kristi’s gift ), adults who can discipline youth, those who are handy on a construction site, those who
can encourage youth to try something new. Your gifts are vital to making this trip happen! Church, think about and pray
about going on the youth mission trip this year- and if you can’t make it, be on the lookout for someone who you think
would be a great chaperone and encourage them to go!
If you are interested in chaperoning this summer, contact Kristi Edwards in the church office (205)338-3374 or
by email at [email protected].

Following the palm waving processional,
Enchanted Children’s Choir
will be performing in both services.
What an extraordinary 24 hours! We had a blast at EXIT 456 and watching the kids find their identity in Jesus and to grow closer to
one another was amazing.
