St. Mary Parish Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017

Adult Servers Needed

Adult Altar Servers are urgently needed to assist with

our funeral Mass celebrations at St. Mary Parish. Adult

men, women and couples are asked to prayerfully

consider sharing this ministry and Corporal Work of

Mercy. Training will be provided. Please call Anne in

the Parish Office at 781/729-0055.

Dear Parishioners,

I don’t think we need to worry

about drought in our area of the

vineyard! Plenty of droplets from

heaven have been blessing our lawns

and gardens these weeks. Why is it we

almost never seem to be happy with the

changing weather we get in New

England? One day may be unbearably

hot and humid and the next we are needing a sweater or jacket.

Each day we wake is another blessing we try to be thankful for

and an opportunity to share friendship and care with others.

Praise God for his love being bestowed upon us bountifully.

Many parishes throughout the archdiocese are using their

internet connections to better communicate with parishioners in

parishes and the wider community. Parishes use not only the

weekly bulletin but also their websites, Facebook accounts,

parish calendars, tweets, podcasts, live local cable broadcasts

and many other media tools to bring the Good News of Jesus

Christ to others. St. Paul is known for using the written word

in his various letters to the early churches explaining the

mysteries and teachings of Christ. Today, our Holy Father

Francis in Rome, Cardinal Sean in Boston and many others

involved in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ use a

variety of methods beyond the printed word on paper to build

community and to share the truths of our faith.

Looking ahead to our future as a parish and pastoral

planning, there is an ongoing need for better communication

with all parishioners. Fewer persons seem to make the time to

attend not only government town planning meetings but also

church planning meetings. How to communicate is always a

challenge. We have all been exposed to the hype about “fake

news” and how that can generate responses and actions

unproductive for the common good. In a similar way, rumors

and inaccurate information can undermine the Good News of

Jesus Christ that a parish is trying to live also.

In order for the parish to better communicate with

parishioners, we are trying to expand our ability to use not only

our online presence but also email to more efficiently share

news with parishioners. If you have not already added an

email address to our parish information, I am asking you to

consider this request. Post office mailings are costly to the

parish. Being good stewards of our resources is a

responsibility we all need to work at. Paper costs, printing

costs, labor costs, postage costs and other miscellaneous costs

all add up. Your email addresses are kept as confidential

information, and this will greatly help us. Please send updates

to Donna Humphrey at [email protected].

Please include Database Update in the subject line.

May the remaining weeks of summer continue to be a

blessing for all in our parish.

Fr. Michael

This Week’s Second Collection

This week’s second collection supports the Catholic

Communication Campaign (CCC). If Jesus Christ were

on earth today, how would he spread his message of

salvation? Wouldn’t he use all communication vehicles

to share the Good News? The CCC believes Jesus

would use as many means as possible (i.e. social media,

podcasts, TV, radio, and print media), and that it why it

supports projects that use the entire array of media tools

available today to evangelize and promote gospel

values. Thank you for your support!

Transfiguration of the Lord

Summertime often affords us the opportunity to take a

break from busy schedules and spend time in favorite

spots at the seashore, or at a campground or maybe even

in a special spot in the city. Those special times and

places may well be moments when we witness the

majesty of God. The disciples in today’s gospel have

gone to one of Jesus’ favorite places and something

extraordinary happens—they see Jesus transfigured and

hear God’s voice, “This is my beloved Son… listen to

him.” Recall a time when you felt God’s presence.

What might God want you to remember from that

experience?

St. Mary Parish Family Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017

What’s Happening...

Adoration of the Most

Blessed Sacrament

When He returned, He found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one

hour?" Mark 14:37

Come and spend the most peaceful hour (or part of an

hour) of your week with Jesus. Each Friday after the 9

AM Mass the Blessed Sacrament is exposed upon the

altar in the Lower Church. The recitation of the Chaplet

of Divine Mercy will take place at 3:00pm, followed by

reposition. Please join us. We are committed to having

at least two persons present at all times of Adoration.

There is a sign-in book in the Gathering Room near the

entrance to the Mary Chapel. If you can commit just

one hour or more, please contact Ursula Koslowski at

781/729-6170 or email: [email protected].

Women’s Summer Bible Study

You are invited to participate in a bible study for women

called: Me, Myself, and Lies: A Thought Closet

Makeover. This bible study book by Jennifer Rothschild

provides a personal study experience that encourages us

to clean out the junk in our minds and replace hidden

negative thoughts with positive truths from God’s word.

According to Rothschild, what we think about often has

a ripple effect on every area of our lives.

Meetings will take place on seven Mondays (July 10

through August 21) from 7:30-9:00pm in the big room

of the Parish Center. Feel free to join us whenever your

summer schedule allows.

Scripture Study Group

at St. Eulalia

The scripture study group will be starting a new segment

on the Book of Psalms, beginning on Thursday,

September 7, and continuing weekly for 11 weeks.

If you have ever noticed how commonly the Psalms are

used in Christian prayer and liturgical life, this would be

a great time to listen to a gifted teacher of Biblical

Salvation History explain the deeper meanings of the

Psalms for us with fellow parishioners. No prior

experience is necessary.

Cost is $35 for lesson materials and contribution toward

DVD set. Please contact Laura McMullin by Sunday,

August 20, if you would like to participate.

Visiting Nurse & Community Health

Hospice Program Bereavement Support Groups—

Drop-in groups are held on the second Sunday of each

month from 4:00pm-5:30pm. The upcoming meetings

will be on August 13, September 10, October 8,

November 12 and December 10. Meetings are held at

37 Broadway in E. Arlington and are open to any adult

who has experienced the death of someone significant.

There is no fee. For information call 781/643-6090

What’s Happening...

Assumption of Our Lady Novena Novena Dates: Aug 6-14 (Feast Day: Aug. 15)

Majestic Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, you received from God the power

and command to crush the head of Satan. Therefore, we humbly beg of you, send forth the

legions of Heaven, that under your command they may seek out all evil spirits, engage

them everywhere in battle, curb their pride, and hurl them back into the pit of hell. “Who is

like unto God?”

With firm confidence we present ourselves before you, our most loving Mother,

afflicted and troubled as we are, and we beg you to let us understand the love you have for

us by granting this petition, if it is according to the Will of God and profitable for our

salvation: (mention your request).

Good and tender Mother, you shall ever be our hope and the object of our love. Mother

of God, send forth the Holy Angels to defend us and drive far from us the cruel foe.

Holy Angels and Archangels, defend and keep us.

OUR COMMUNITY

Today’s Reflection

Today’s celebration only occurs on a Sunday once every six years or so. While we heard the Transfiguration Gospel earlier this year on the Second Sunday of Lent, today the context is different. In the works that resound over Jesus today, we can hear the echo of the words that sounded on the day of our Baptism, when we were counted amount the beloved of God. Let us pray today that we, too, will one day inherit the promise of resurrection and life in the kingdom of heaven.

To All Committee Chairs and

Ministry/Group Leaders

It may be time to start to thinking about reserving space for your meetings, events, celebrations, etc. for next year’s calendar which starts in September. Room/space reservations are taken on a first come/first serve basis. Also, think about updating your member lists. This is particularly helpful when we are getting our files ready for the annual CORI Sunday, when we will be present in the Gathering Room to collect your 2017 forms, a practice mandated by the diocese for staff and volunteers who may come in contact with children or vulnerable adults. Please send any space reservations requests and update to [email protected]. Please send any space reservation requests and updates to [email protected].
