Rev. Eric and Matt on the Great Salt Flats in Utah as they travelled cross country. Often, when the Apostle Paul would show up in a new city he would greet them with a salutation such as, “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” He would then spend the next couple of months trying to con- vince people who lived in the city to welcome him, or at the very least, give him a listen in- stead of casting stones at him. This sounds hor- rific, but thankfully I wouldn’t know. Danville Congregational Church, as I greet you today, I have to say that Matt and I have been extended such an extravagant welcome! Even before our arrival we had Facebook messages and emails inviting us to coffee and dinner. When we finally parked our cars after the 3,700 mile journey, you greeted us with a welcome BBQ for children and families hosted by the search committee. When I arrived in my office that first day, your staff welcomed me with a smile and willingness to help in any capacity possible. On my first Sunday, I was greeted by all of you with so much warmth and enthusiasm. In the weeks that have followed, many of you have called, emailed, or have stopped in just to say ‘hi.’ In the next few days, weeks, and months ahead I know that we will be entering a period of tran- sition—a time of the “already and not yet.” Dur- ing this time, know that as your new Associate Minister I am also one of your pastors. What does this mean, you might ask? While I do have a particular focus with our children, youth and families, if you find yourself in need of a pastoral presence or in need of pastoral care, please do not hesitate to call the church office or send me an email at [email protected]. Through- out this interim period, I will be working closely with Bob Hardy, our Moderator, Kristina Kelchner and Bill Armstrong, our Vice Moderators, and church Council, so that we may move forward together and follow the Spirit’s call. Beloved, it is my belief that God has brought us together to partner in ministry so that we may offer a place of peace and hope. So, now, let us do just that—let us join together and continue with the work we have been called to do. Thanks be to God! Grace and Peace, September 2015

Our Vision

At Danville Congregational Church we welcome you to a progressive spiritual community that is open and affirming, celebrates differences, and encourages alternate views. We explore the Bible with curiosity and enthusiasm, taking it seriously but not literally. Taking Christ’s call passionately to love our neighbor, we extend our faith into action for the betterment of all. Wherever you are on life’s journey, we offer you a place of peace and hope.

September 2015 3

In September, the rhythm of the summer starts to fade and a sense of change is in the air; our sights set on the school year and the holidays, not far off. I know: “how could he say such a thing”? But, there are many of us that have been through both minor and major transitions this summer and are glad that September is here as an opportunity to be more settled and focused.

My family was one of those that have just recently completed an adventurous home sale in order to move all the way to Danville. For some reason it was more difficult than expected, adding to the other transitions and changes that have occurred at DCC this summer. But we move ever forward as God calls us to be in greater service.

Next month’s focus is a sight of optimistic high hopes, excitement and support of our beloved church family to serve as a place of respite, support, love and nurturing on our busy path of life.

In September we will have guest Senior UCC Pastors to fill the pulpit and guide us on our journey with God. September 27 will be Rev. Eric’s turn at the helm. A committee is forming to help discern and hire our Interim Minister; please let me know if you are interested in joining the team.

We again give thanks for the love and energy that Rev. Laura and Rev. Anton brought to the DCC con-gregation and we’ll miss them. We look forward to-gether along with the great leadership of our congregation, Rev. Eric, and all the faith we can muster because with God, all is well and all will be well. Blessings in peace,

Dear DCC Friends,

Henza and I would like to thank you for the many phones calls, emails, cards and personal conversa-tions during these last weeks. You have been “the balm in Gilead” that we sing of so often in worship. We depart from Danville with memories of wonderful people who care deeply about their church and about each other. There are many memories of how our lives were touched by yours.

May Christ’s peace accompany you on your separate and collective journeys.

In His name,

Anton and Henza

All-Church Family Picnic Sunday, September 6

The Church Family Commission is delighted to an-nounce that we are planning an all-church family pic-nic/BBQ following church service on Sunday, September 6, right here at our DCC campus. Church Family will organize the main dish and we’ll ask for potluck on appetizers, salads, and desserts, so get out your favorite recipes to practice!! If you’d like to help organize in some way please contact Joyce Klassen.

Choir Returns!

First Rehearsal September 10

First Sunday

September 13

No auditions required, just the desire to sing! For more information, contact Julie Herndon.

Come Ring Handbells With Us! Rehearsals Begin September 13

Playing bells is FUN! If you can read music, we’ll teach you all you need to know about handbells! We play for Sunday services, and currently rehearse on Sunday nights from 5:45–7:30 PM. We are also ex-panding the handbell ministry to play out in the com-munity.

Talk to the director, Mary Deauclaire, or any of the current handbell ringers if you’d like to know more. Or maybe you just want to check us out . . . if so, we’ll invite you to a rehearsal!

From the Worship Commission

Choir robes will be cleaned in preparation of the choir’s return to worship on September 13. Note that choir practice is scheduled to resume on September 10. Auditions are not required to join the choir, only a sincere desire to sing and have fun with the joyful members of the DCC music team.

Handbell Choir rehearsals are also going to start on September 13. A workshop is being planned and it’s being described as a terrific learning opportunity for bell ringers old and new.

We are researching purchasing a new music light for the Organ Console.

Please note that the baptismal font will be a perma-nent fixture in the sanctuary.

We would like to remind everyone that Sunday ver-bal announcements are to be kept to only two. It will be on a first-come, first-served guideline. Should you need to make a verbal announcement, please send a request to either Diane Hardy or myself. The re-quest needs to be received by the Friday prior to Sunday service. This only refers to the verbal an-nouncements; the bulletin will continue to publish other church announcements.

The next few months will be busy and we will need everyone’s cooperation and patience.

Blessings,

Polly Smith and Diane Hardy

Big Thanks to Our Work Day Volunteers!

Have you noticed some attractive improvements around the church? Buildings and Grounds had a week of work, starting with painting the fire hydrant and sprinkler valves before putting rocks around that

area, the flagpole area, the empty bed at the far end of the parking lot, and chips all around Kairos and Koinonia. During this work week plants were trimmed, including the grape vines in Dayspring’s playground area. Most of that work was done on Monday when the temperature was 102 degrees, so a huge thanks to the work crew: Dee Brook, Brett Clark, Alice Donovan, Bob Donovan, Judy Halden, Dave Halseth, and Walt Torgersen. Later that week Brett built a planter box in the Dayspring playground area and Walt repaired blinds and many toys for the pre-school. A huge thank you goes to all these dedicated volunteers—give them a word of thanks when you see them!

What Is the DCC Prayer Team?

The DCC Prayer Team is a group of individuals who carry concern and compassion for those in need of spiritual support and who commit to taking those concerns to God in prayer.

Begun in 2002, there are currently 40 individuals participating in this quiet ministry. We each pray whenever and however we wish. We pray over health issues, grief, concerns, gratitude and joy.

If you have a prayer request, you may send it to [email protected], or you may give it to Pastor Eric or any of the deacons. Prayer requests are sent out to the team via email as soon as possi-ble after they are received. All requests for prayer are confidential unless offered during Sunday wor-ship or permission to share information has been given.

If you would like to join the Prayer Team or if you have questions or suggestions, please let me know. It is truly an honor to be a part of this ministry of caring and concern.

Friday Lunchtime Book Study: Laudato Si’ – On the Care of

Our Common Home, by Pope Francis

Study Begins September 11

A lunchtime book study of Laudato Si’ – On the Care of Our Common Home, by Pope Francis will begin on Septem-ber 11. In his second encycli-cal, Pope Francis draws all Christians into a dialogue with every person on the planet about our common home. We as human beings are united by the concern for

our planet, and every living thing that dwells on it, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Pope Francis’ letter joins the body of the Church’s social and moral teaching, draws on the best scientific re-search, providing the foundation for the ethical and spiritual itinerary that follows. Laudato Si’ outlines: The current state of our common home The Gospel message as seen through creation The human causes of the ecological crisis Ecology and the common good Pope Francis’ call to action for each of us

The book is available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Please bring your lunch if you like. The study will take place each Friday from 12-1 PM, beginning September 11 for 6 weeks, in the Library.

Did you know? All Circle members are welcome to help with cleanup after Fellowship Time for your Circle’s Sunday (even if your main task was being a greeter or usher). Many hands make light work!

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. – Ecclesiastes 4:9

Men’s Lunch Gathering September 24 – October 29

The men of DCC have been meeting for breakfast or lunch for fellowship and discussion since spring 2006, almost 10 years ago. The group changes as peo-ple come and go, and for many these gatherings have been very meaningful and thought-provoking.

This year we will have our first series starting September 24 at noon and con-tinuing for 6 Thursdays through Octo-

ber 29. We will be meeting at the Brass Door, 2154 San Ramon Valley Blvd, San Ramon, CA 94583, in the Executive Room. Please note the change of venue. All men of the church are welcome for a time to get to know each other and discuss topics relevant to our religious life.

Before each meeting we send out an email reminder including a proposed topic, relevant readings, and some questions to consider; if you would like to be added to the address list and are not there already, please let Dave Hill know.

Faith Journeys Recommended Read for September: The New Jim Crow

by Michelle Alexander

Once in a great while a book comes along that changes the way we see the world and helps to fuel a nationwide social movement. The New Jim Crow is such a book. Praised by Harvard Law professor Lani Guinier as “brave and bold,” this book directly challenges the notion that the election of Barack Obama signals a new era of colorblindness. With dazzling candor, legal scholar Michelle Alexander argues that “we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.” By targeting black men through the War on Drugs and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control—relegating millions to a permanent second-class status—even as it formally adheres to the principle of colorblindness. In the words of Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP, this book is a “call to action.”

Called “stunning” by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Levering Lewis, “invaluable” by the Daily Kos, “explosive” by Kirkus, and “profoundly necessary” by the Miami Herald, this updated and revised paperback edition of The New Jim Crow, now with a foreword by Cornel West, is a must-read for all people of conscience.

We are looking for writers to contribute interviews for the Member Spotlight. Each month we will focus on an individual or a couple from our congregation and share their lives and achievements. This could be a great way for a budding journalist to get expe-rience, or for a longtime writer to give back to our church community. Please contact the office if inter-ested!

Well-Prepared Students Head

Back to School Many thanks to all of the generous donors who provided 35 new backpacks stuffed with school supplies and nine gift cards for back-to-school clothes and shoes, all for children of homeless, formerly-homeless, and at-risk families who are participating in SHELTER, Inc. and Contra Costa Interfaith Housing programs. The first 13 backpacks were for SHELTER, Inc. kids going to school in Brentwood, where back-to-school day was a very early July 28. We also provided backpacks for another 14 SHELTER, Inc. students going back to school in other parts of Contra Costa County in late August. All of our SHELTER, Inc. kids this year are children of military veterans who have struggled with homelessness and found help with SHELTER, Inc. via a federally-funded program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families. We wish them all well in school this year.

Another eight backpacks stuffed with school supplies and a donation for Homework Club supplies went to Contra Costa Interfaith Housing (CCIH), who provided this e-news thank-you message:

“Thanks to the outpouring of support from donors and volunteers, low-income and formerly homeless students are ready to start the school year. More than 165 students received backpacks loaded with school supplies, prepping students for academic success. These essential resources, paired with afterschool Homework Club help, give students the confidence they need to tackle the school year. Thank you for making this happen!”

Speaking of Homework Club, CCIH is always on the lookout for volunteer after-school tutors to help their students with their homework. If you would like to give this a try, contact Carol Gilliland or Doug Leich at DCC, or Gloria Bertolozzi (925-448-2004) at CCIH.

As Dayspring Preschool’s fifth school year and sum-mer session came to a close, we again had to say farewell to many wonderful children and their fami-lies who will be moving on to elementary schools. It is always difficult to see them leave!

We were especially touched by the thank you note we received from one of those families, who moved here in 2013 from China and enrolled their 3 year old daughter. She spoke no English, and was under-standably distraught for the first few days! In no time, the staff had calmed her and won her trust. Two years later, she is completely ready for success in Kindergarten and beyond. The mother wrote, “We are honestly so blessed to have found Dayspring and so thankful Dayspring accepted [our daughter]. Thank you for taking such loving care of [our daugh-ter]. I can see her growth. She start to make friends. And she always love to go to school. English is not my first language, but even in Chinese, words can't express how grateful we are.”

Luckily, many Dayspring families will return with their younger children in the years to come, and they continue to refer their friends and neighbors to us. We are also blessed to welcome so many new young friends and their families to our exceptional commu-nity every year. Once again, we are virtually fully-enrolled, with only a few programs available and a wait list for almost every classroom! Many, many thanks to all of the DCC friends who work so hard, all year, to keep our facilities bright and beautiful, and help with Dayspring events. We love you!

The school year began with two Orientation meet-ings on Monday, August 24 (one for preschool fami-lies, one for pre-K families). Parents learned about Dayspring policies and procedures from Janice in Kairos Hall, while the children were introduced to their new classrooms, teachers, and classmates, and enjoyed a fun activity and craft project. Many weren’t ready to leave when their parents were!

Visit the Dayspring website at www.dayspringpre-school.org for more information!
