Rev. Collin

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

Look Happy Church Start Up Month!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to get met anything. What you do need to do is look through this Newsheet and see all of the activities that are starting up this month. You see, September is the month where we shake off the last little bit of the summer slow down and really get moving.

WoW is really going to get going this month. Already tried WoW a few years ago? Come on back! The classes are different and you might learn something. See a committee that looks interesting? Go talk to the chair and see how you can get involved. Ready to do some mission? The food pantry could use volunteers.

If you are unable to physically be there, then pray for these ministries and activities. Lift them up to God.

Waverly Road is hitting September running. Come and join us!

Health Tip: The Basics of Food Safety

Make sure you've got your facts straight when it comes to food safety. The U.S. Food Safety Administration explains: • Foodborne illnesses can be serious, resulting in chronic health problems or, rarely, death. • Never thaw meat on a kitchen counter, as bacteria can multiply rapidly at room temperature. It's also important to marinate meat in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. • While bleach is good for cleaning the kitchen, there's no benefit to using excessive amounts. • Wash all fruit and vegetables with water (never detergent or soap), even if you're going to peel them.

Never rinse raw meat, poultry or fish, which could spread contaminated juices. • Follow microwaving instructions carefully, including allowing food to stand a few minutes after heating. This gives

the food time to finish cooking. • Don't rely on smell as a way to tell if food has gone bad. Some harmful bacteria don't affect the smell or taste of

food. • Always keep cooked food warmed to the appropriate temperature to avoid bacterial growth. Copyright © 2016 HealthDay.

Psalm 78 offers a song about God’s glorious deeds” and “the wonders” God has done. It stresses that God is continually and forever faithful to the people God has chosen. This is true, the psalmist writes, even though God’s people forget. Miracle after miracle is recounted, God’s presence and care throughout history are described, and the people still ask, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?”

We live in divisive times. Our experience of political, social, or religious division can make our lives, our communities, and our world feel like a wilderness. The news reports of violent acts seem only to increase. We watch millions displaced by war, and hear of women and children battered and abused. We listen as messages of fear and hate, often based on race and ethnicity, grow louder and louder. Weapons crowd our streets, and tools created for destruction increase in their capacity each day. As people of God, we might be tempted to ask, “Can God spread a table in this wilderness?”

However, we also know what the psalmist knew—that in our wilderness God not only can but does spread a table of justice, reconciliation, transformation, unity, and peace. By participating in the Peace & Global Witness Offering this World Communion Sunday, we connect and add out support to Presbyterian ministries that witness to Christ as the Prince of Peace. God spreads a table of justice, with the support of Presbyterian mission co-workers, for women in the Congo abused by warring factions, a table of reconciliation for Presbyterians and their neighbors engaged in interracial conversations. God spreads a table of transformation where tools built for destruction become water pumps that give life.

Giving to the Peace & Global Witness Offering is one way we come to God’s table of peace. Twenty-five percent of this offering remains with our congregation to build up peace in

our community, 25% expands our witness throughout the region supporting ministries of peace and reconciliation in Presbyterian mid councils, and 50% supports the global witness to Christ’s peace through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and the reconciliation work of Presbyterian World Mission.

Please give generously in gratitude to the God who spreads such a bountiful table of peace.

PRAYER Within the division and violence of our wilderness, you spread a table, O Prince of Peace. May the gifts we share be used to prepare the feast of justice, reconciliation, and peace you offer freely to the world. Amen.

As you know, we take your donations to the bank in order to bring their spirit and intent to life. For your edification and enlightenment, here are some incoming transactions that you may or may not be aware of. Let’s get started!

Meal on Wheels covers our expenses to clean up our kitchen after meals are prepared.

Did you know that we have a cell phone transmission tower in our steeple? That’s right, we receive a regular check from the phone company! Who woulda thunk it?

As with any other accounts, our accounts accrue interest.

We occasionally get checks to cover the use of WRPC for weddings.

We get checks to cover columbarium expenses.

There of course are the holiday and other special offerings, too numerous to mention here.

We get cash donations to cover the purchase of the “These Days” brochures.

To fund mission trips, we will get receipts from fundraisers and other donations.

We will get payments to purchase curriculum such as books, DVD’s etc.

WOW donations are used to cover future WOW costs, primarily food, cooking and cleanup.

We will get occasional checks to cover office supplies and gas for the van.

We will get donations specifically earmarked for future capital improvements.

Don’t forget the Food Pantry! We get memorial and non-memorial checks as well as pledged donations.

That is enough for now; there are more. Although some of the above items are eclipsed by pledged donations, they allow our church to be the vibrant and loving community participant that it is. Thanks!

Bill Butler, Receiving Treasurer

Announcements

From Eileen Butler Heads Up!

Renovation on our church bathrooms is scheduled to begin this week. Bathrooms on the hit list include the men’s and women’s on the 1st and 2nd floors of the education wing, the nursery bathroom, and the men’s and women’s bathrooms off of the Fellowship Hall.

The exact pacing of getting everything done is not guaranteed, so there may be some Sundays when we will have to make do with the handicap-accessible bathroom on the 1st floor education wing and the little tiny bathroom off of the front workroom (if Collin will share).

Your patience would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Eileen Butler on behalf of the Facilities Task Force

From Pastor Collin Don’t forget, WRPC will have a Congregational Meeting on September 18th following Sunday Worship Service. The purpose of the meeting will be to elect the Nominating Committee.
