    THE COUNTRY

According to the most recent UNDP report, Honduras is ranked 106th

out of 169 countries withcomparable data in the United Nations Human Development Index. The economy relies on anarrow range of exports, notably bananas and coffee, making it vulnerable to natural disastersand shifts in global commodity prices. Honduras is an extraordinarily beautiful country, yet itremains a difficult place for many to live and is considered one of the least developed and leastsecure countries in Central America.

In recent years, Honduras has been hit hard by tropical storms and hurricanes. Hurricane Mitchdevastated the country in 1998, leaving 5,000 people dead, 70 percent of crops destroyed, anddamage estimated in the billions, setting back development by decades. Endemic poverty, chronic unemployment, and the prospects offered by drug trafficking have contributed to acrime wave conducted mainly by youth gangs known as "maras."

Natural disasters have piled their effects on top of malnutrition, inadequate housing, andwidespread disease. More than one third of Honduran infants are malnourished. HIV/AIDSprevalence among adults is 1.8 percent, the second highest in Latin America. Each day, nineHonduran children lose one parent to AIDS. Some 18 percent of the population has no accessto basic health services, while 16 percent lack access to safe water. While populations areevenly divided between rural and urban areas, poverty is not. About 74 percent of the countryspoor people (86 percent of the extremely poor) live in rural areas areas where Living Water

    International works.

    OUR WORK IN HONDURAS

Since beginning operations in Honduras in 1997, Living Water has completed more than 300water projects along the north central coast of the country. Living Water International is aregistered NGO in Honduras with an established team of trained nationals implementing watersolutions for communities in need. Headquartered in La Cieba, Living Water Honduras (knownin-country as Agua Viva Internacional) also rehabilitates broken-down wells. In the Northernregion of Honduras, villages have reported an almost immediate 75 percent reduction inillnesses after well completion. Each year, new wells are drilled in Honduras by Living Watermission teams. In 2012, Living Water plans to lead 50 mission trips to Honduras, with hopes of

    increasing production in the future.

    GENERAL INFORMATION

A LWI Honduras team member commented, Because of the beds of rocks, we thought this project was not going to be possible, but just when we thought it was over, God stepped in and open the way for this communitys new water source. He is the God ofthe impossible, praise His name! When the team arrived, community members were utilizing a river located half of a kilometeraway from the community to meet all of their water needs. Because of this, fami lies were suffering from malaria, diarrhea andsevere dehydration among other preventable water related illnesses. The LWI Honduras team was pleased to learn of thecommunitys use of a pour flush toilet as this will help prevent further spread of disease in the area. During the teams s tay, ladiesprepared food for the team, while the community men assisted with the water project, security and materials. Most communitymembers earn a living working in small stores or by working in the fields. The younger generation are now acquiring jobs in Saba.

The nearest school is located half of a kilometer away from the community whose students, teachers and administrative personnelall have access to the new, safe water source.

    TESTIMONY

The LWI Honduras team had an opportunity to meet with thirty-five year old community member and teacher, Varlos Guardado, who stated, The team encouraged the community people to pray for their water source and that God will be glorified. The heal thand hygiene team did a wonderful job working in the school with the students reinforcing good habits to practice. We are grateful forour new water source. It will help improve the physical health in the community. A special thanks to the organization and thecollaborators who came and planted this seed. God bless them!

    HYGIENE EDUCATION

During the hygiene education, the LWI Honduras team addresses: Hand washing, how to properly transport and store water, disease transmission and prevention, how to maintain proper care of the pump, as well as signs and symptoms of dehydration andhow to make Oral Rehydration Solution. All of these lessons are taught in a participatory method to help community membersdiscover ways to improve their hygiene and sanitation choices, and implement community driven solutions.

    EVANGELISM

The community people were receptive and attentive to the Gospel that was being shared. They were happy to know that Jesus diedfor their sins and know he would like to live in their hearts. Many of them responded to the call. We pray that the purposes of Godwill be done in their lives.
