in print!Launching a newspaper in 2014 might seemincongruous with developments over thepast decade and a half. Universities havesteadily grown their online presence andshifted focus away from print publications.Some universities, like Queen’s in 2010, discontinued their community newspapersall together.

Four years later, we have decided tobring back the Gazette in recognition of theimportant role print publications still playin the digital age. Through research and anecdotal evidence, we learned that manystaff and faculty members value the tangi‑ble experience of picking up a newspaperand reading about the work happening atthe university and the accomplishments oftheir colleagues. They also want a forum toshare their ideas and views about the uni‑versity and post‑secondary education moregenerally.

The re‑created Gazette seeks to build onthe solid reputation it earned and the senseof community it fostered during its 41 yearsof publication. Many readers will be famil‑iar with regular sections including CampusNews, Forum, For the Record and Researchat Queen’s. We added new features such asphoto essays, Lives Lived and Beyond theBlackboard, stories that explore studentlearning experiences outside of the class‑room. We have tied the content togetherwith a visually appealing design.

The newspaper is one aspect of the ongoing revamp of internal communica‑tions as we begin to integrate a number ofcommunications vehicles. As you may havenoticed, the twice‑weekly e‑Queen’s emailto all staff and faculty is now known as theQueen’s Gazette Today. There’s more to itthan a name change, though. Instead of adigest of headlines, the Queen’s Gazette Today is a curated email of stories, eventsand job postings that gives readers a quicklook at what’s happening at Queen’s. Wehave improved the visual appeal and readability of the email by introducing photos and reducing the text.

The Queen’s News Centre, which will be redesigned and renamed the Queen’s Gazette this fall, will continue to be the source of daily updates from the university. The re‑designedMyQueensU, the university’s intranet, will re‑launch in the coming weeks as the one‑stop shop for Queen’s information andwill also include a feed of news stories.

We hope that the newspaper and othercommunications vehicles will worktogether to inform, engage and inspire faculty, staff and students. We want to hearfrom you on whether we are achieving thisgoal and ways that we can improve.

We hope you enjoy the first issue of the Gazette.

Gift exhibition before it opens to the public.

Bader gift enhances Agnes’s collections BY MARK KERR, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre will serve as aricher and more in‑depth resource for students, fac‑ulty and the regional cultural community with thedonation of 68 paintings from the personal collection of Alfred (Sc’45, Arts’46, MSc’47, LLD’86) and Isabel(LLD’07) Bader.

The paintings join more than 130 works includingtwo Rembrandts that the Baders have donated to theArt Centre since 1967.

“We are thrilled to receive this transformative gift,and honoured to be entrusted by the Baders with itscare and interpretation,” says Jan Allen (Artsci’87,BFA’90, MA’92), Director of the Art Centre. “As visitorswill discover, the quality of the works is truly outstand‑ing. We are very excited to have the opportunity towork with such an amazing collection, and eager toshare it with our immediate community and with

students, researchers and audiences around the globe.”The 68 paintings span a time period of 1610‑1710

and represent 49 different artists. Dr. Bader’s passionfor paintings from this period led him to start collect‑ing in 1951. His collection grew dramatically over sev‑eral decades.

Dr. Bader has taken great care researching theworks by Dutch and Flemish artists of the baroqueera. The resulting collection offers insight into evolv‑ing painting techniques and helps shed light on thepolitical, religious and philosophical underpinnings of society at that time.

The Bader Collection supports experiential learn‑ing opportunities for students and helps advance re‑search and scholarship in art history. Queen’s is one ofthe few universities in the world that gives studentsthe chance to examine high quality original works ofart in a campus setting supported by conservators andspecialists in baroque art.

An exhibition highlighting a number of paintingsfrom the recent gift will run at the Agnes EtheringtonArt Centre until June 1.

Justin Reekie (Artsci’14) enjoysperforming in theatre productions,Allison Williams (Artsci’15) enjoysdrawing and painting, and PhilipLloyd (ConEd’13) plays waterpolo. But their disparate extracur‑ricular activities don’t keep themembers of the Alma Mater Soci‑ety (AMS) executive from sharinga common vision for Queen’s, notto mention a respect for one an‑other that they believe will servethem well during their term.

“I am so grateful to have bothPhilip and Justin by my sidethrough this journey and I’m ready to get started,” says Ms. Williams,AMS President and CEO.

The AMS executive wants tochallenge each other and really seewhat they can do to improve the

student experience on campus. “One thing I am particularly

excited for is working on thisyear’s Homecoming,” says Mr.Lloyd, AMS Vice‑President(Univ ersity Affairs). “It is one ofthose unique opportunities that allows both students and alumnito interact and engage with theQueen’s community. I want to en‑sure that this year is the best yet.”

The new executive gives a lot ofcredit to their campaign team forhelping them win the election.

“When we found out we won it was more than just a win for the three of us,” says Mr.Reekie, AMS Vice‑President (Operations). “It was a win for our team and volunteers. Thosepeople put their lives on hold forus and we are forever grateful fortheir contributions.”

Securing the future of a stadiumsteeped in history BY CRAIG LEROUX, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

With nearly a century of history behind it, GeorgeRichardson Memorial Stadium may soon undergo animportant revitalization if a fundraising campaign toraise $25 million is successful.

“Richardson Stadium is an enduring symbol of theuniversity’s legendary spirit and pride,” says TomHarris, Vice‑Principal (Advancement). “It has longbeen a fixture at Queen’s and the time has come togive it new life and ensure it remains an importantvenue for the coming decades.”

The stadium is steeped in history. Originally lo‑cated on what is now Tindall Field, it played host tothe 10th Grey Cup game in 1922 that saw the Gaelsdefeat the Edmonton Elks 13‑1. In 1938, as war loomedin Europe, it was the venue for a significant foreignpolicy speech by American President Franklin D.Roosevelt as he pledged American aid should Canadacome under threat of attack.

In 1971, the original stadium was torn down and re‑ built in its current location on West Campus, incorpo‑ rating some parts from the original structure. Last year, after an engineer’s report declared sections of the seating unsafe, temporary bleachers were brought in and the university doubled its efforts to find philan‑

thropic support for the revitalization of the stadium.Earlier this year, a pledge of $10 million from

alumni Stu and Kim Lang helped kick off the publicphase of the campaign for the stadium. A $5 millionpledge from the Richardson Foundation followed inApril.

“The dream of a revitalized stadium will only berealized through philanthropy, and we are very grate‑ful for the remarkable pledges from the Langs andthe Richardsons,” says Vice‑Principal Harris. “As webegin the next phase of our campaign, we hope theirgenerosity will inspire others to support the project.”

Richardson Stadium is one of the priorities of theQueen’s Initiative Campaign. Three new outdoor turffields have already been constructed as part of thecampaign: Tindall and Nixon Fields on main campusand the West Campus Field. These fields support var‑sity sports, including football, field hockey, lacrosse,rugby and soccer and intramural activities. Commu‑nity groups use these new fields heavily, with manyfield teams holding practices and games on all threethroughout the playing season.

The university has committed to consulting closelywith area neighbours, city officials and the broadercommunity as fundraising moves forward and spe‑cific plans for the stadium’s revitalization begin to develop.

Queen’s law students recently wonthe Canadian rounds of the PhilipC. Jessup International Law MootCourt Competition, the largest andmost competitive law moot in theworld.

The Queen’s team – oralistsEmily Evangelista (Law’15),Stephanie Hodge (Law’15), SeanMitra (Law’15) and Lisa Scheulder‑man (Law’15), researcher Anasta‑sia‑Maria Hountalas (Law’15) andstudent advisor Amélie Goudreau(Law’14) – beat out teams repre‑senting nearly every law school in Canada. Queen’s scored anim pressive 6‑0 sweep in everyround of the moot that requiresstudents to master dozens of intri‑

cate issues pertaining to currentcontroversies in international law.

This victory continues a recenttrend of impressive performancesby Queen’s at the competition. Lastyear, Queen’s placed second inCanada, the law school’s bestshowing in 20 years.

“The team’s goal was to developexcellent advocacy skills, whichthey did. The results are simply awelcome confirmation,” says DarrylRobinson, the Queen’s Law facultymember who coached the team.

The teams were given a wide‑ranging international law issuebetw een two fictional countries,the State of Amalea and the Re‑public of Ritania. The two partieshave gone to the InternationalCourt of Justice to resolve a num‑ber of differences that have arisen

between them as a result of activi‑ties in waterway separating thetwo territories.

“The key to the team’s successwas the variety of talent eachmember possesses,” says Mr. Mitra. “We all bring somethingdifferent to the team and thatreally helped when w e got to thedifferent stages of the process fromwriting and researching to dealingwith different issues and givingconstructive criticism.”

Ms. Scheulderman says partici‑pating in the international lawmoot was the most valuable thingshe has done in law school.

“There’s the substantive ele‑ment of learning about interna‑tional law, but I think the mostvaluable thing has been the advo‑cacy skills,” she says. “Professor

Robinson is a very experienced advocate and he taught us somevery important tips and tricks forboth written and oral advocacy.The one‑on‑one coaching is reallyimportant and it’s not somethingyou can get in a lecture setting.”

Ms. Hodge says attending thecompetitions had as much impactas the months of preparation.

“I was surprised by how much I learned just being at the competi‑tions. By doing so many rounds,we could see what did and didn’twork and adjust accordingly. Ithink we all improved so muchduring the competitions,” she says.

The Queen’s students travelledto Washington for the internationalrounds of the Jessup. Studentsfrom 550 law schools in more than80 countries took part in the event.

Balanced budget passedThe Board of Trustees approvedthe university’s budget for 2014-15at its May 2 meeting. The $483-million operating budget was developed over the past year asshared service and academicunits presented their individualbudget plans to the Provost’sA dvisory Committee on theBudget (PACB).

“The university will once again have a balanced budget in 2014-15, but many financial challenges remain,” says Alan Harrison, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic). “The pen-sion solvency deficit is the mostsignificant financial risk on the horizon in 2015-16, and our de-ferred maintenance backlog of$243 million and inflationary cost pressures make it challenging to operate in this time of static or declining government grants and constraints on tuition fees.”

The university’s pension solvency deficit, which was estimated at $292 million as of Aug. 31, 2013, could require the university to make large annual payments to pay down that deficit beginning in 2015-16 and the university will begin planning for that eventuality.

The budget was preparedunder the ac tivity-based budgetmodel, which helps align thebudget planning process with the university’s strategic priorities.

“Financial sustainability is one of the key drivers in the university’s strategic framework, and it is integral to advancing our mission as the research-intensive university with a transformative student learning experience,” adds Harrison. “We were able to maintain the budgets of shared services constant in 2014-15 relative to 2013-2014 we are continuing to look for opportunities to contain costs across the institution.”

With the 2014-15 budget approved, the process of plan-ning for the 2015-16 budget will begin shortly. The shared service units will be first to develop their budget plans for review by the PACB, which will make budget allocation recommendations to the Provost. Once the shared service budgets are set, the process will then turn to the faculties and schools in the fall.

Searching for history and roots in the Bader Collection

David de Witt explainsa work during theopening reception forthe Bader Collection

Gift exhibition at theAgnes Etherington ArtCentre on April 26.

David de Witt (MA ’93, PhD’00) is intimately familiar with the works of art Alfred and Isabel Bader have donated to the Agnes EtheringtonArt Centre. Dr. de Witt, the Bader Curator of European Art at the university’s art gallery, has produced two extensive catalogues on theBader Collection. He has also curated an exhibition highlighting the Baders’ most recent gift of 68 paintings, which continues at the ArtCentre until June 1. Dr. de Witt met with Mark Kerr, Senior Communications Officer, just days before the Bader Collection Gift exhibitionopened to discuss the artwork, his interactions with Dr. Bader, and the impact original art can have on the student learning experience.

What do you like aboutresearching and workingwith the Bader Collection?

I enjoy discovering that a work isas good as I thought it was, andalso discovering that the work isin fact by a significant artist. I findit exciting when I can take theartist’s ideas and intentions anddraw connections to why thework is painted so passionatelyand with such conviction. I likemaking sense of what motivatedthe artist to achieve at a high level.

What interests you in theworks of Dutch artists fromthe baroque era?

Dutch artists were working inworkshops. They had the widerpopulation as a market so the artis not as elite as it often was in Europe at the time. With thatworkshop tradition, you get alarge of number of different people doing things quite differ‑ently. It is interesting for me to see larger social, political and religious issues play out amongartists and see their different approaches.

Also personally, it’s somethingof a search for my roots. Growingup in Canada as someone of Dutchbackground, I went looking forwhat it was to be Dutch, andknowledge of Dutch history, thingsI really hadn’t grown up with. AndRembrandt was a great artist; it’snot hard to admire his work and towant to know more about how itwas produced and the impact ithad in its own period.

What has it been likeworking with Alfred Bader?

Typically, if we had a lot of workahead of us or a project on the go,we would be calling every day orusually a few times a week aboutthings that would come up. Alfredwas working all of the time. Heliked to see things happen andmove projects forward. I can ap‑preciate how his chemical empiremoved ahead so well, from my experience of working with him. It was certainly inspiring and, in asense, serious work keeping upwith Alfred Bader. As someonewho came to art history somewhatas an outsider, he has educatedhimself extremely well.

Do you have a favouritework from the recent gift?

I am very proud that the WillemDrost work “Self‑portrait as St.John the Evangelist” is part of thegift and the collection. It is a workby an artist whom we did not yethave. That was a bit of a surprisebecause the Baders thought theyowned two works by this masterbut research by another Queen’s

alumnus, Jonathan Bikker(MA’93), who is now at theRijksmuseum in Amsterdam,showed that both of those workswere not by Drost. So suddenlythere was no Willem Drost in thecollection, and that presented achallenge to Alfred and me to finda work that would fit. This workcame up at an auction and I didhave to persuade Alfred of thework’s merits. He had a chance tolive with it and grew to admirethe work as well.

How will the gift and thecollection impact the studentlearning experience atQueen’s?

Students may not know it rightaway, but having a chance to basetheir studies, comments and re‑sponses on direct study of a workof art puts them in a separateleague. They may only appreciateit more fully once they leaveQueen’s and look for opportuni‑ties in museums or as scholars.They are able to make more astutecomments after having seen theworks and knowing what the realdifferences are from one work toanother. Just dealing with imagesin reproductions can make youvery productive but it’s also haz‑ardous: not as reliable.

Award-winningprofessors still learningfrom studentsEach year, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) gives two professors theFrank Knox Award for their outstanding commitment to teachingex cellence. Named for the highly esteemed economics professorwho taught at Queen’s for 40 years, the Frank Knox Award serves asa reminder of the high-quality teaching by professors at Queen’s.

This year’s award recipients, Clarke Mackey (Film and Media) and Robert Morrison (English), sat down with Rosie Hales,C ommunications Officer, to talk about the award, Queen’s students,and the value of an education in the humanities.

How did it feel to win the Frank KnoxTeaching Award?

Clarke Mackey: I must say that I was pleasantly sur‑prised because sometimes I worry that it will be hardto connect with my students because of our genera‑tional gap. It didn’t matter to me whether I won; itwas just great to be nominated. The fact that thisaward is based on who students believe to be themost dedicated means everything to me and I’m glad that students feel they are getting somethingmeaningful out of our time together.Robert Morrison: This is my third Frank Knox Teach‑ing Award but each one has felt just as good as theothers. It’s like listening to “Hey Jude.” It feels fantas‑tic whether it’s your first time or 50th time listening toit. To be nominated means that I’m still doing my joband I was very happy to know that. The process, fromnomination to award, is an avalanche of work for thestudents, especially when they have so many othercommitments. I really applaud Queen’s students –they are wonderful in a whole bunch of ways.

How have Queen’s students changed overthe years?

CM: In my 25 years at Queen’s, I’ve found the students here to be decent, curious, smart and goodto each other and their professors. It’s a really posi‑tive working atmosphere. RM: I have found Queen’s students wonderful fromthe day I arrived 11 years ago. My admiration for stu‑dents here is very high; they’re just top‑notch people.

Do you think students respond differently tothe humanities now than when you started?

CM: I think we have to do a little work on explainingto people that it’s enormously helpful to have a hu‑manities education. The humanities give you thechance to think critically, be creative, and communi‑cate effectively in different ways. You gain a sense ofethics and sense of the larger world which makesyou a better decision maker and independentworker.

RM: I think that a humanities degree is applicableeverywhere. In regards to English literature, I al‑ways talk about how John Keats relates to today,because John Keats does relate to today. He strug‑gled with issues like health, relationships, debt anddeath – as many people today do. An education inthe humanities exposes you to things that are partof yourself that you didn’t know were there.

What do you hope your future at Queen’sbrings for you?

CM: Hanging around with 22‑year‑olds and keep‑ing up with them is very stimulating for me andteaches me an enormous amount about the world.I learn a lot from my students. I hope I still havesome useful things to tell them so they can learnfrom me, too. RM: A prof I had at the University of Lethbridge inmy first year changed my life. I remember himtelling me that my job was to go into the class‑room and aim to do the same for others. I hope Ican do this for Queen’s students.

Mr. Kar‑Fai Gee’s paper was ti‑tled “All the Time in the World:An Examination of Time Prefer‑ences Using Monetary Delay Dis‑count Rate.” He was supervisedby Professor Steven Lehrer and isnow working for Finance Canada.Mr. Richards, who was supervisedby Professor Edwin Neave, titledhis paper “Financial Stability un‑der Heterogeneous Expectations.”He currently works at the Bank of Canada.

Blending Ancient Humour with modern teachingBY R. DREW GRIFFITH

One August day in 2011 I was sitting in my office basking in theglow of a just‑finished sabbaticalwhen the head of my departmentcame to say the Faculty of Artsand Science was hoping to interestme in a program to redesign certain large introductory coursesinto a “blended” format, a term Ijust then heard for the first time.

After some reflection, I agreedto join the project, provided weadapted my Ancient Humourcourse. Though a second‑yearcourse, it has no prerequisite, andso is introductory in nature, andthough it had never had morethan 400 students in any givenyear, I was sure there was poten‑tial for further growth.

Arts and Science providedthree sorts of human resources, as well as monetary assistance, tohelp with the redesign. Monthlyround‑table discussions chairedby Associate Dean Brenda Raven‑scroft let professors in widelyvarying departments (biology,film, math, psychology, etc.) sharetheir experiences and strategieswith blended learning. Each pro‑fessor was paired with a profes‑sional course‑designer (in my caseRick Nigol). I also received muchtechnical assistance with Moodleand PowerPoint, and invaluablehelp in getting copyright permis‑sion for slides from librarian MarkSwartz. All participants were paid

an overload stipend that soundedvery generous, though in retro‑spect I hate to guess my finalhourly wage!

In my case the redesign took ayear of dedicated labour, largelybecause I had to replace my usual“narrative” teaching‑style with anapproach that is both, of course,much more interactive, but alsomore “visually oriented,”which required substantially rethinkingthe material.

The resulting course keeps thetextbook, the six multiple‑choicetests (now worth only 50 per centof the mark), and a couple of lec‑tures to the whole class. Every‑thing else is different. Most of thelectures have been replaced byweekly PowerPoint slideshowsnarrated by myself, which the students access online. Eachslideshow both reviews the week’smaterial and sets out two assign‑ments, which ask the students invarious ways to compare aspectsof ancient humour to contempo‑rary pop culture. Each weekgroups of 40 students get togetherwith a TA to do these assignmentstogether in subgroupings of eight.(We use both undergrad and gradstudent TAs, and give them a sub‑stantial manual to guide themstep‑by‑step through the course.)These sessions – in the second iter‑ation of the blended version in2013 there were 17 different groupstotaling 680 students – account forthe other half of the course‑mark.

In addition to the normal University Survey of StudentAssessment of T eaching (USAT)questionnaires, we survey stu‑dents each year using the Class‑room Survey of Student Engage‑ment (CLASSE). Unsurprisingly,they report being far more en‑gaged now that they actively par‑ticipate as opposed to passivelylistening to my lectures. Not onlyare the TAs crucial to deliveringthe redesigned course, but, beingmuch closer in age to the studentsthan I, they “get” the cultural ref‑erences of their own generation,which has also greatly increasedthe level of student engagement.

Nearly three years have passedsince that August day in 2011, andwe are looking forward to thethird blended offering of AncientHumour this coming fall. It is notjust the students who have bene‑fitted from the course’s transfor‑mation. I have come to see a sub‑ject I thought I knew well frommany unexpected angles, andhave learned more about 21st century humour than I wouldhave thought possible. My students now say I’m “relatable” –another term I’ve recently heardfor the first time.

With convocation just around the corner, we look back to June 1976 when Queen’s granted Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson an honorary de-gree. He returned the favour by performing for the graduating class.

Thirty-eight years later, Queen’s will confer an honorary degree on another Canadian jazz great, Holly Cole, on Friday, June 6 at 2:30 pm. Thesinger is an active philanthropist who has performed benefit concerts formany organizations. The other honorary degree recipients at this year’sspring convocation ceremonies include Regina Rosen, Bernard Langer,Carolyn Acker, William Macdonald Evans, Robert Prichard, Ronald Lee,V ilayanur Ramachandran, Carlos Varela Cerezo, and Anne Marie Bonkalo.

RememberingBen WhitneyHusband, father, well-respected director at Queen’s School of Business, baseball fanatic. Born in Frobisher Bay, Nunavut, in 1972 and grew up in Seeley’s Bay; died on Saturday, January 25 in Kingston.

Ben Whitney (Artsci’95) was the master of cere‑monies for our lives at the Centre for InternationalManagement and Queen’s School of Business (QSB).Whether it was holiday lunches, welcoming cere‑monies, gala dinners or goodbye parties, he was atthe front of the room, holding the microphone andcracking everyone up with his trademark humour.

In a tough meeting, Ben had a knack for breakingthe tension and keeping the day light. He was a prac‑tical joker, frequently changing our homepages orprank calling us doing impressions of different peo‑ple around QSB.

Ben could make us laugh one minute and amazeus with his talent the next. He had an impressiveability to get the job done. He was a passionate, hard‑working individual who was committed to makingQSB the best business school. In his leadership roleswith Queen’s Executive Education, full‑time MBAand more recently the Master of International Busi‑ness program, Ben was service‑focused, which is amust in QSB. He would always do his absolute bestto meet the needs of staff, faculty and students.

He had the beautiful ability to connect with any‑one. Coming from a broadcast journalism back‑

ground, Ben was inquisitive and genuinely interestedin learning more about you. His warm, funny andprofessional personality also transferred across cul‑tures. He made every effort to perfect cultural greet‑ings. He was more comfortable with some than oth‑ers. The double or triple kiss from European andLatin counterparts was a little too touchy feely for hiscomfort zone, but he still did it.

The well‑being of students was Ben’s top priority.He went above and beyond to give students an ex‑ceptional Queen’s experience. On one occasion, aprospective student visited campus on a rainy day.Ben got in a cab with the student and drove aroundwith him to make sure he got to see the campus.

Ben’s heart of gold was always on display, espe‑cially when it came to his family. Day in and day out,he would talk about the importance of his family. Hewould share funny stories and proud moments. Weall knew that the second his wife Christie or sonsBenjamin or Ethan needed him, he would be there.

After growing up in the small rural community ofSeeley’s Bay, Ben went on to touch people around theworld judging by the condolence notes that pouredin from every corner of the Earth. Ben’s impact athome and abroad, sense of humour, and love for hisfamily will not be forgotten.

Jim Banting (Artsci’93, PhD’97)has returned to campus aspresident and CEO of P ARTEQ In‑novations, the organization hecredits for helping to launch hiscareer in business development 15 years ago.

“It feels like a homecoming,and it also represents an impor‑tant new phase of my career,”says Dr. Banting, who co‑foundedthe Queen’s spin‑off companyVaxis Therapeutics in the late‑1990s. “I am interested in applyingthe skills I have learned in orderto continue the mandate ofPARTEQ in the commercializationof the leading‑edge research thatgoes on at Queen’s.”

PARTEQ worked with Dr. Bant‑ing and the other co‑founders toestablish a spin‑off company thatcombined technologies from dif‑ferent Queen’s researchers.PARTEQ also offered support inthe form of mentorship and initialbusiness planning.

Dr. Banting says his early expe‑rience with PARTEQ will informhis work now that he is on theother side of the boardroom.

“I can certainly understand allthe things we would want to bemindful of when we are providingour services to our customers, thescientists and inventors at theuniv ersity,” he says. “We want toensure they understand PARTEQ’srole in the process for commercial‑izing their technologies.”

Over the past 15 years as a busi‑ness development professional inthe life sciences sector, Dr. Bantingworked on transactions and dealsinvolving a wide range of tech‑nologies. He relished the opportu‑nity to apply his scientific knowl‑edge in a business setting. He alsoenjoyed working with large, cross‑functional teams to close newbusiness deals.

“Closing a deal is always an interesting process because theproblems the working groupsneeded to solve are different everytime,” he says. “We had to be cre‑ative and collaborative to mergebusiness, science and technology‑related issues into a business con‑tract. It was an absolutely greatway to earn a living.”

Dr. Banting is taking that samecollaborative approach as head ofPARTEQ. He intends to ask a lotof questions and find out, in termsof commercialization and entre‑preneurship at Queen’s, what isworking well and what could beimproved. He wants to take that

information and work with thePARTEQ staff, board of directorsand other stakeholders to developan updated strategic plan.

“I want us to define the strate‑gies PARTEQ will use to continueproviding commercialization services to university researchersin a way that is efficient but pro‑vides for the optimal chance for areturn,” he says.

Originally from the Torontoarea, Dr. Banting earned his undergraduate degree and PhD at Queen’s, the latter in the Department of Pharmacology andToxicology under the supervisionof Dr. Michael Adams. He marriedand started his family while livingin Kingston before moving toMontreal and then on to the Wash‑ington, D.C., area.

Dr. Banting is happy to returnto Canada for what he considershis dream job.

“A lot of people make the moveto the U.S. and never have thechance to come back,” he says.“So I feel fortunate to have theopportunity to w ork with theQueen’s researchers and the outstanding staff and board of directors at PARTEQ. I look forward to digging in to this new role and moving Queen’s

technologies forward.”

Dick Zoutman is concerned that 40 per cent ofinfection control practitioners in Canadian hospitalsdon’t believe their facility is sufficiently clean.

QuestioninghospitalcleanlinessDick Zoutman (Biomedical and Molec‑ular Sciences) has found that nearly 40per cent of infection control practition‑ers do not believe their hospital is suffi‑ciently clean.

The study examined how the work‑ing relationship between Infection Pre‑vention and Control (IPAC) teams andEnvironmental Services (EVS) teamsimpacted antibiotic‑resistant organism(AROs) rates. AROs, such as nosoco‑mial methicillin‑resistant Staphylococ‑cus aureus (MRSA) infection, can bespread from a healthcare practitioner toa patient through means as simple aslifting the patient onto a bed.

“It is a source of concern for me that40 per cent of infection control practi‑tioners believed their hospital wasn’tclean enough for infection controlneeds,” says Dr. Zoutman. “I also thinkthat it’s important to note that a goodworking relationship between IPACand EVS results in reduced infections.”

Evergreensrestrict Arctic tundraresponses to climatechangeThe impact of climate change on the Arctic is aquestion of increasing urgency for researchers.New findings indicate that current predictionsof vegetation change that will occur as theArctic w arms could only be part of the story.There are other key players that have beenoverlooked.

Using experimental greenhouses located atthe Daring Lake Research Station in the North‑west Territories, Tara Zamin (former PhD student, Biology), co‑author Paul Grogan (Biology) and co‑author Donie Bret‑Harte(University of Alaska Fairbanks) demonstratedthat climate change impacted the vegetationmuch differently than has been observed atother Arctic sites, leading to more conservativepredictions for tundra change. They are thefirst scientists to carefully measure not onlyabove but also below‑ground growth re‑sponses of individual plants, thereby allowingthem to comprehensively assess how eachArctic species is being affected.

“It’s the turtle and the hare of the Arctictundra in the ongoing race to adapt to a chang‑ing climate,”says Dr. Grogan. “Deciduousshrubs are the hare, and have been rapidly increasing in more fertile Arctic sites, leadingto predictions that the tundra could become abirch or willow shrubland, which would feedback to increased warming. Evergreen shrubsare the turtle – slow, but well adapted to theinfertile soils typical of Arctic tundra. At oursite, they are presently in the lead.”

Hugh Horton and Cathleen Crudden have developed a process that will help bind organic compounds to metal surfaces.

‘Sticky’ process reaches patent stageCathleen Crudden (Chemistry) and Hugh Horton(Chemistry), along with students, postdoctoral fel‑lows and other collaborators, have developed a newprocess that allows organic compounds to bind tometal surfaces. This cutting‑edge technology is nowbeing patented and commercialized by PARTEQ andGreenCentre Canada.

“Imagine pouring vegetable oil onto a metal sur‑face and expecting it to stay,” says Dr. Horton. “Wehave created a bond through a chemical absorptionprocess that would allow that to happen.”

The first example of the formation of organicmonolayers (single molecule‑thick coatings) on met‑als was published about 30 years ago and ignitedhuge interest in the scientific community. The tech‑nique forms the basis for a wide range of biosensingapplications using modified metal surfaces. How‑

ever, these coatings lack robustness and are sensitiveeven when exposed to air, greatly limiting their ap‑plications and making the technique expensive.

Drs. Crudden and Horton are the first in theworld to develop a viable alternative to this initialprocess. In their strategy, the bond between the metaland the organic coating occurs through carbon in‑stead of sulfur, which gives much greater strengthand resistance to oxidation.

Common, everyday uses of this technology couldinclude applying organic coatings to automotive sur‑faces that would protect them from corrosion and de‑crease friction. The use of these coatings to improvecommercial biosensors for medical diagnostics is al‑ready underway.

Monica Stewart and StephanieSimpson are both well‑acquaintedwith the challenges that come withsettling into a new city and a newcountry.

Many years ago, Ms. Stewart,now the coordinator of faculty re‑cruitment and support programs atQueen’s, moved from Germany toKingston to study at Queen’s. Sheended up staying and marrying aCanadian, and eventually foundwork in the human services sectorwith the Social Planning Council.

Ms. Simpson, an advisor in theHuman Rights Office, is the daugh‑ter of Jamaican parents who bothstruggled to find work in theirfields in Canada. They perseveredand finally landed good positions –her father in printing/publishingand her mother in nursing.

“I have a lot of empathy fornewcomers to Kingston. I’ve feltwhat many of them have felt – Iknow how incredibly hard it can be to find work and settle into anew place,” says Ms. Stewart.

Since settling in Kingston them‑selves, both Ms. Stewart and Ms.Simpson have been integral com‑munity players in developingsupport services for newcomers, particularly through the KEYSCommunity Employment Centrewhere they have both served aschairs in the past. Now, the pair iscontinuing to share their knowl‑edge, and personal experience and

professional expertise, to serveboth Queen’s and the greater com‑munity as members of the councilfor the Kingston Immigration Partnership (KIP).

KIP launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Kingston Com‑munity Health Centres, KEYS, andthe Kingston Economic Develop‑ment Corporation with the goal ofstarting a conversation in the com‑munity around immigration andhow to better welcome and servethe needs of newcomers.

Queen’s has been involved inthe partnership since day onethrough Ms. Stewart, who servedon the initial steering committee forKIP. Earlier this year, however, theuniversity renewed its dedicationto the partnership, committing topositions on the KIP Council (Ms.Stewart and Ms. Simpson) and toreporting annually on institutionalactivities related to KIP’s StrategicPlan, which includes areas such asemployment; education, trainingand language; settlement; healthand wellness; and housing, trans‑portation and family services.

“Being the largest employer inthe community, Queen’s plays animportant role in this partnershipand I am so pleased that we haveMs. Stewart and Ms. Simpson providing guidance and expertiseon how we can better serve new‑comers’ needs,” says PrincipalDaniel Woolf.

Ms. Simpson says from a humanrights and equity standpoint, involvement in KIP allows the

university to continue ensuringthere aren’t barriers for newcomers looking to work at the university.Through the KIP network, Queen’s

becomes more aware of whatpeople are experiencing in the community and what can be donedifferently.

“Queen’s has always been inter‑ested in attracting and retaining thebest, staying competitive. At thesame time, we want it to be a di‑verse and welcoming place, awareof the needs and challenges new‑comers face,” says Ms. Simpson.

Since its inception, KIP has beenbusy creating various initiatives tosupport immigrants, including jobfairs, mentorship programs, an employer advisory group, an an‑nual multicultural arts festival, andeducation sessions on women’shealth and mental health.

“If you’re new to the city, you of‑ten don’t have the contacts and net‑work that help you settle into your

new life more smoothly,” saysMichael Harris, Chair of KIP. “WithKIP, we want to create a far‑reachingdialogue with partners across thecity so we can provide the services

newcomers need to succeed andthrive in the community. Queen’s

plays a critical role in our effortsand we’re fortunate to have theuniv ersity’s active participation.”

Rethinking humanities in the digital ageBY MARK KERR, SENIORCOMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

How does technology influencethe study of traditional arts andhumanities disciplines, such as his‑tory and literary studies? And con‑versely, how can the skills of criti‑cal analysis used by humanitiesscholars help us better understandcontemporary digital culture?

Those are the big‑picture ques‑tions students will tackle this sum‑mer during the inaugural DigitalHumanities Field School at theBader International Study Centre(BISC).

“Up until this point, under‑graduate students have had onlylimited access to the emergingfield of digital humanities. Thefield school puts Queen’s ahead ofthe curve in terms of expandingthe field to undergraduate stu‑dents,” says Shannon Smith,course director and an adjunct as‑sistant professor of English Litera‑ture at BISC. “The field school will

equip undergraduate studentswith digital literacy skills they can use during their own research,which ultimately supports the university’s commitment to undergraduate research.”

Dr. Smith says the idea for thefield school originated severalyears ago during a course she wasleading on the cultural history ofthe Olympics. She asked studentsto use newspaper archives to findhistorical representations ofOlympic events. She soon realizedthat even though the studentswere comfortable with computersand technology, they were not digitally literate.

“I needed to provide them with not just the fundamentals ofsearching an archive but with acritical view of that experienceinformed by a humanities ap‑ proach,” Dr. Smith says. “Iwanted them to question how the archive was constructed andhow the archive mediates theexperience and changes how

they experienced material.”One of the two 3.0 credit

courses in the field school will dealdirectly with that issue, askingstudents to ev aluate digital re‑sources using the skills of criticalanalysis native to humanities disci‑plines. The course will also chal‑lenge students to understand theidentity of the “user” that has beenpopularized with advancements intechnology. The field study com‑ponent of this course will requirestudents to host the BISC’s firstTHATCamp, an open “unconfer‑ence” meeting focused on humani‑ties and technology.

The second 3.0 credit course in the field school offers studentsmore hands‑on experience work‑ing on scholarly digitalizationprojects. Chris Jones, a professor at the University of Canterbury inChristchurch, New Zealand, willinvolve the students in his projectto digitize a 1615 King James Bible.The students will visit the churchthat houses the Bible with Dr.

Jones and develop strategies forrepresenting the object in a digitalformat. Additionally, the studentswill work with a digital curator atthe British Library to explore theissues and problems that ariseduring the digitization process.

“The two courses marry thetheoretical with the concrete,” saysDr. Smith, “and the students willacquire quantifiable skills that theycan transfer to other research projects or future employment opportunities.”

Two students from the fieldstudies course will get the chanceto apply those skills right away asstudent assistants in a Queen’s li‑brary on the Kingston campus.The digital humanities student as‑sistants will undertake projects inthe Jordan Special Collections andMusic Library using the knowl‑edge they gained from the fieldschool. They will present theirprojects as part of the annual Inquiry@Queen’s research confer‑ence in March 2015.

“The proposed Centre forDigital and Print Culture at Douglas Library is envisioned as a hub of interdisciplinary scholar‑ship at Queen’s. I foresee studentswho attend the field school con‑tributing to this initiative andshaping the future of humanitiesand technological culture atQueen’s,” says Martha Whitehead,University Librarian.

The program’s assistant lec‑turer, Emily Murphy, a PhD can‑didate in the Department of Eng‑lish at Queen’s, has created a blog(dhbisc.queensu.ac.uk) for thefield school. In addition to provid‑ing information about the fieldschool program, the blog works tohighlight some of the digital hu‑manities research taking place atQueen’s. Dr. Smith invites mem‑bers of the Queen’s community tosubmit posts to the blog and par‑ticipate in the discussion.

The five‑week field schooltakes place from June 23 until July 29.

Alumni flex adaptability muscle in China BY WANDA PRAAMSMA, COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Alumni Sarah Cheng (Artsci’13) and Stephanie Rudyk(Artsci’13) surprised even themselves in how muchthey could accomplish in just a few months.

They moved to Shanghai last August to develop an

after‑school peer mentorship program for migrant children and by early October, they had laid thegroundwork for an initial 14 high school volunteersand 28 migrant children to participate in the program,called Students Responding to Students (SRS). Sincethen, they’ve expanded their program three times,now accommodating more than 70 students with the help of nearly 40 volunteer mentors from five international schools.

“Despite some early challenges navigating culturaldifferences there hasn’t been one door closed on usand our ideas,” says Ms. Rudyk, who majored inpolitical studies with a minor in Global Dev elopmentStudies (DEVS) at Queen’s. “In China, there’s a lack of experience with community service and volunteerwork, and in many ways this has worked in ourfavour. We’ve had a lot of space to try things and do what we want. There’s a lot of trust.”

The pair received funding for their project throughthe Pathy Family Fellowship Community LeadershipProgram, offered for the past several years through theQueen’s University International Centre. SRS’s maingoal is to help less advantaged migrant children livingon the western outskirts of China’s largest city.

“These migrant children face many inequalities interms of poor living conditions, and overcrowded andunderfunded schools. But still they come to SRS full ofjoy, and they really look forward to being with theirbig buddies, their mentors. It’s been amazing to see therelationships and the project as a whole develop,” saysMs. Cheng, who majored in psychology and DEVS atQueen’s.

Ms. Rudyk and Ms. Cheng organized SRS to runout of the Kites Community Centre in Xujing neigh‑bourhood, but since they started last fall, they’veadded programming in a nearby migrant school aswell. In both locations, the mentors work with childrenon academic activities – reading and writing – but alsocrafts, music, stories and games. Much of the curricu‑lum they’ve developed is infused with teaching valuessuch as respect, tolerance, gratefulness, honesty andresponsibility.

And while the project is pushing the children’s lim‑its, it has also pushed Ms. Rudyk and Ms. Cheng into

unknown territory, encouraging them to grow and testthemselves in new ways.

“I thought I was a flexible person before but this experience has made me more flexible. It’s also mademe more daring,” says Ms. Cheng.

While their formal project ends this spring aftereight months, the pair hopes to extend their fundinguntil August, in order to ensure sustainability by pass‑ing on the project to partnering schools. Ms. Cheng isalso planning a summer camp for migrant children inJuly and August. After a few months at home, Ms.Rudyk plans to return to Shanghai to pursue a master’s in Chinese politics and economy at ShanghaiJiao Tong University, and will likely play a consultingrole with SRS.

Both say they are really grateful for the Pathy fel‑lowship and the freedom it’s given them to pursuesuch a rewarding and interesting project.

New Master of Finance program across-cultural experienceA new Master of Finance program launching this fallby Queen’s School of Business (QSB) will give stu-dents the best of two worlds. Studying in Beijing withprofessors from both Queen’s and Renmin University,students earn a Queen’s degree while gaining valu-able international experience in the heart of China’sfinancial sector.

“The Master of Finance-Beijing program is aunique opportunity for Canadian and Chinese students alike,” says Wei Wang, Assistant Professor of Finance, QSB, and the program’s director. “The one-year program is taught in English and students will belearning from international experts from bothQueen’s and Renmin’s Hanqing Advanced Institute ofEconomics and Finance, while at the same time creat-ing a global network with their fellow classmates.”

Dr. Wang says it’s a golden time for students togain this kind of bilateral experience. With Canadaand China as major trading partners, and China un-dergoing significant financial reform over the nextfew years, students in the Queen’s-Renmin programwill boost their chances at jobs at home and abroad.

The program is modelled on Queen’s popular Mas-ter of Finance program offered in Toronto and thecurriculum consists of 10 courses, five taught by Ren-min faculty and five taught by Queen’s faculty. Stu-dents are based in Beijing but have the option totravel to Canada for one of the Queen’s-led courses. Patient approach pays off for GibsonBY MARK KERR, SENIORCOMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Queen’s Gaels hockey goaltenderKevin Bailie (Artsci’17), describesBrett Gibson’s coaching style ashonest and upfront. As it turns out,Mr. Gibson is just as forthrightwhen assessing his own develop‑ment as a head coach over the pastnine seasons at Queen’s.

“I apologize when I see alumnifrom my first couple of years ofcoaching,” says Mr. Gibson. “I wasyoung and enthusiastic and Ithought I could build a winnerright away. That’s not possiblebecause it’ s a process.”

The coach’s more patient ap‑proach is starting to have the de‑sired effect. The Gaels wereranked in the top 10 nationally thispast season for the first time since1982. This year’s squad tied theprogram record of 17 victories in a

season and swept the Ottawa Gee‑Gees in the first round of theplayoffs. The Gaels pushed theirsecond‑round opponent, the Car‑leton Ravens, to a decisive Game 3but lost that contest by a narrow2‑0 margin.

As an acknowledgment of thatsuccessful season, Mr. Gibson re‑ceived the Father George KehoeMemorial Award for the coach ofthe year in Canadian Interuniver‑sity Sport (CIS) men’s hockey. Heis the first Queen’s coach to winthe award.

“The award means manythings to me. First, some day I willlook at the trophy and rememberwhat a privilege it was to coachthis group of kids,” he says. “Sec‑ond, it’s a reminder of how far wehave come in nine years. It’s reallya credit to my coaching staff andthe alumni.”

Mr. Gibson says he has worked

hard to change the culture aroundthe team since taking over thereins from former NHL great Kirk Muller in 2006. He has en‑couraged his players to strive forexcellence both in the classroomand on the ice.

“We were not expected to winin the past but now that’s chang‑ing. I had to push to get there, andI was not nice at times, but nowwe do expect to win,” he says.“Now I can offer recruits an out‑standing Queen’s education and achance at winning an Ontario University Athletics champi‑onship. I truly believe we can win that title.”

That’s not to say Mr. Gibson isan authoritarian ruler over theteam. He sees the team as a part‑nership, not a dictatorship, whereplayers can offer their feedbackand he’s willing to listen.

Mr. Bailie says the team has

responded well to Mr. Gibson’sapproach.

“Brett is calm and structured.

He’s well respected in the dressingroom, and we never panic if weare down because of him,” saysMr. Bailie, who won the ClareDrake Award as CIS rookie of theyear.

Mr. Gibson uses similar peoplemanagement skills in his businesscareer as a nursing home adminis‑trator in his hometown ofGananoque. He operates one facil‑ity with his mother and his wifeand sister manage the other. It’sthat family support that has al‑lowed him to balance both busi‑ness and hockey commitments.

Mr. Gibson admitted thehockey side of things can be quitedemanding. Canadian universityhockey coaches are often called onto fill more roles than their coun‑terparts in the junior or profes‑sional ranks who have more re‑sources.

“I’m everything: equipmentguy, trainer, psychologist, generalmanager, coach, mentor, friend.That’s the hard part sometimes,”he says.

Mr. Gibson’s passion for coach‑ing far outweighs the downside of administrative tasks.

“When the players come to theteam, a lot of them are 20 yearsold, which is still really young.They are still figuring out wherethey want to get to,” he says. “Atthe end, we are graduating themand sending them to professionalhockey or out into the workworld. I love seeing that.”

As for his own future, Mr. Gibson says he aspires to move up the coaching ranks, but he is in no rush to get there, especiallyconsidering the success last sea‑son.

“For now I want to reap the rewards of the program’s suc‑cess,” he says. “I am not leavingQueen’s for the time being.”

Leadership lessons from a leader in his fieldBY SHELLEY PLEITER, QUEEN’SSCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Julian Barling,Queen’s School ofBusiness profes‑sor in Organiza‑tional Behaviour,has made thestudy of leader‑ship his life’s

work. Now he’s written a book,The Science of Leadership: Lessonsfrom Research for OrganizationalLeaders (Oxford University Press),to demystify the research on leadership, and make the knowl‑edge gained from it accessible to a wider audience.

There’s likely no one betterqualified for the task. The BordenChair of Leadership, Queen’s Re‑search Chair, and Fellow of theRoyal Society of Canada has alsobeen awarded fellowships in sev‑eral other international organiza‑tions. He reads hundreds of re‑search studies on leadership eachyear and has contributed a wealthof his own papers on the subject.He earned a PhD in psychologyfrom University of the Witwater‑srand in South Africa, has receivedmany major research grants andawards, including the National

Post’s Leaders in Business Educa‑tion Award in 2002. He has alsobeen on the editorial boards ofsome of the leading academic jour‑nals in organizational behaviour.

Dr. Barling says the book hasbeen a labour of love. “It tries toconvey what we know from behav‑ioural science research on leader‑ship in a way that is accessible andinteresting to curious and moti‑vated leaders,” he says. “It’s de‑signed not to terrify them with allthese awesome theories, but ratherto have the opposite effect. Afraj Gill (Com’15) took his periodof self‑discovery in high school tothe extreme. He served on studentcouncil, volunteered with numerouscharities, started a non‑profit organ‑ization and participated in his localair cadet program as a pilot, allwhile achieving a high academicstandard that helped earn him aChancellor’s Scholarship to Queen’s.

“I was at an experimental stagein my life and I went really hard,”says Mr. Gill, a native of Surrey,B.C. “I always wanted to exposemyself to as many things as possi‑ble because I wanted to figure outthe most efficient and scalable wayof making a positive impact onhumanity .”

Mr. Gill’s home province recog‑nized his work last year, makinghim the youngest recipient of itsCommunity Achievement Award,

the second highest civilian honourfor public service in B.C. Mr. Gill,who was unable to attend theaward ceremony last year, acceptedthe award on April 29.

Of his many volunteer activities,Mr. Gill took a particular interestwith the Progressive InterculturalCommunity Services Society givenhis background as an immigrant toCanada. The non‑profit organizationprovides programs and services tonew immigrants as well as seniors,farm workers, women and youth.

Mr. Gill and his family facedmany challenges when they emi‑grated from India in 2000. Mr. Gillwas eight years old at the time,spoke only a bit of English andcouldn’t write the language. Hiswell‑educated parents struggled tofind work in their fields. Eventuallythey did – his dad as a socialworker and his mom as a teacher —and their persistence is somethingMr. Gill still carries with him.

“My parents made a lot of sacri‑fices, and it taught me the impor‑tance of incorporating resilience and

determination into everyday life,” hesays. “If you want to make a positiveimpact on society, you have to go outof your way to push yourself reallyhard by making sustained sacrifices.I know it sounds obvious, but it’shard to do when you have so muchgoing on in your life.”

Mr. Gill is now focused on mak‑ing a difference through entrepre‑neurship. He has worked on twostart‑up companies. While one hasnot panned out, he has not allowedthe failure to deter him. In fact, hewould like to see failure be more accepted in the university environ‑ment.

“The only way we can foster in‑novation in universities is if wedon’t punish students in the eventof failure. Students might be moreapt to work on start‑ups if theyknew they weren’t going to be pun‑ished if they failed.

“I know that’s easier said thandone because the grading system isat the core of our education system.But maybe there’s a way the entre‑preneurial model could be incorpo‑

rated and I think the Summer Innovation Institute at Queen’s is a great start.”

Mr. Gill has put a couple of hisstart‑ups on the shelf for now in or‑der to take an internship position atGoogle’s global headquarters inSilicon V alley this summer. He islooking forward to gaining a betterunderstanding of what drivesGoogle’s innovation and productdevelopment so that he can applythe lessons to his own life and en‑trepreneurial endeavours.

Down the road, Mr. Gill hopesto combine his entrepreneurial zealwith community service. He citesthe humanitarian work of Mi‑crosoft founder Bill Gates and hiswife, Melinda, as an example of applying entrepreneurial skills tosolve global health issues.

“Because my family’s back‑ground is social work and non‑profit organizations, that’s wheremy passion has always been andit’s something I will always have inmind – a life without service just isn’t worth it.”Afraj Gill accepted B.C.’s second highest civilian honour for public service.

Students voice community’s desirefor public library branchBY MARK KERR, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

For students to gain a deeper understanding of socialjustice issues, adjunct professor Melanie Bedore(MPA’05, PhD’10), knew her upper‑year geographyseminar would have to involve more than just lec‑tures, assigned readings and class discussions.

She decided to assign a class research project that would examine the issue of library accessibilityin Rideau Heights, an economically vulnerable community located in the north end of Kingston.

“I wanted to give the students a research projectthat would make the complex theories discussed inclass both real and applicable,” says Dr. Bedore,whose doctoral research focused on food security inthat area of the city.

The students shared their final written report withthe Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) boardand staff members, as well as with city councillors.They hope their work can inform public discussionas KFPL and the City of Kingston plan to developsome form of public library facility for the commu‑nity over the next several years.

“I believe the students appreciated the opportu‑nity to make a difference in a community that doesn’toften have a voice,” says Dr. Bedore. “The studentswere coming up to me very excited saying, ‘we needto get this information out there.’”

Through a focus group and other research, thestudents found that Rideau Heights residents are excited about the prospect of a public library branchin their community. The closest branch, Kingscourt,is up to 4 km away– a location that is inaccessible for many people because of physical bariers. The

students found that residents of the neighbourhoodlook forward to having a space where children cando their homework and adults can search for jobs orimprove their computer literacy skills.

The students also argued more broadly in their report that access to a public library supports keyideas of social justice: all people need barrier‑free opportunities to pursue their interests, to engage inself‑development and to learn.

Olivia Grier (Artsci’14) says there is real value inthe students’ work.

“I hope the city sees the importance of a library asa place for community engagement. And I also hopethis report adds to the momentum leading up to 2015when a decision about a library in that area is ex‑pected,” she says.

Teaching each otherThe students formed three groups with each one focused on a particular part of the research project.One group looked at applying the theoretical concepts to the situation in Rideau Heights, while another group researched the policy environment related to libraries in Kingston. The third group conducted a focus group in the community wherepeople from all ages and backgrounds shared theirthoughts on library access in Rideau Heights.

This approach to understanding social justice was supported by a newly renovated active learningspace in Ellis Hall. The students tested the relation‑ship between theories and their research findings in a visual way using the whiteboards that cover thewalls of the classroom. The room’s innovative seating

permitted them to move around and work together.When it came time to write the final report, the

students compiled the information collaborativelyand in real time using an online file sharing program.

“What impressed me about the students is thatthey all took ownership of the project and, in a sense,their own learning,” says Dr. Bedore. “They knewthat if they learned something, everyone in the classhad to know about it. Everyone disseminated theirfindings in a communal manner.”

Jacqueline Savoie (Artsci’14), a member of the the‑ory group, says the project helped hone her listeningskills. When the students who conducted the focusgroup returned to class to share their findings, shereally focused her attention on getting informationthey might not have been looking for at the start.

Overall, Ms. Savoie enjoyed the experience andbelieves it will help her prepare for a career in com‑munity development after graduation.

“The project was relevant and real. Going in wehad ideas and hunches but we couldn’t base any realclaims on those. Getting involved in the communityproject and going into the community gave us some‑thing we could use for our arguments.”
