JOHN J. GRANGE,Sheriff.
Sydenham, Owen Sound,2Sth November^ 1854.
Sir,—I am in receipt of your letter of the 8th inst. ; in reply beg to inform
you that the return required, shewing the number of persons committed to the
gaols, during the last ten years, up to the 31st December, 1853, does not apply to
this county, in consequence, only having been set apart as an independent countyon the very day the order is required, viz : 31st December, 1853.
You will receive the desired information from the Sheriff's Return, County of
Wellington, County of Grey being one of the United Counties, Wellington and Greyup to the above dates.
I have the honor to be. Sir,
Your most obedient servant.
W. B. Lindsay, Esq., &c., &c., &c.Quebec.
GEORGE SNIDER.
Port Sarnia, 15th January, 1855.
Sir,—In answer to the circular issued by the Legislative Assembly in Novem-ber last, requiring from the Sheriffs of Upper Canada a return in detail, shewing the
number of persons committed to goals under their care, for the last ten years, end-ing the 3Lst of December, 1853. To which I would beg leave to state that there
were no prisoners committed to the goal in the County of Lambton. The return required will appear in the accounts rendered by Kent and Essex,
as this County was united with these Counties during that period.
I have the honor to be. Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
W. B. Lindsay,
Clerk of Assembly,
Quebec.
J. FLINTOFT,Sheriff.
51
Toronto Goal, 21th December^ 1854.
Sir,—I beg leave to acknowledge receipt from you, of a printed circular re-
quiring a detailed statement of the number of prisoners committed to the goal of
the United Counties, for the ten j^ears ending 31st December, 1853, " distinguishing
the number committed for misdemeanor, and on civil process; showing also the
number convicted of crime, distinguishing the crime of which they have been con-
victed, and showing also the number of males and the number of females in each
class." In reply allow me respectfully to remark, that such a voluminous return
will require an immense amount of extra labour, and be attended with no little dif-
ficulty, in consequence of the want of proper records from which to compile
it, and also from the fact that the goal government has been changed into different
hands, during the period for which the return is required It will therefore benecessary for me to employ additional assistance to enable me to perform the labour
attendant on it. I therefore desire to know if any, and what provision has beenmade for the payment of those whom it may be requisite for me to employ to get the
work done. An answer to the above at your earliest convenience is respectfully
requested byYour most obedient servant,
GEORGE L. ALLEN.William B. Jarvis, Esquire,
Sheriff, U. C. .Y, and Peel.
Sheriff's Office, Toronto,24^^ January^ 1855.
Sir,—^I beg leave to enclose the accompanying letter from Mr. Allen the goaler
of the United Counties of York and Peel.
Mr. Allan's duties require the whole of his time, and it would be unjust to com-
pel him to make out the returns asked for, without placing in his power the meansof paying for the labour required.
You will be pleased to inform me upon what fund Mr. Allan may draw for the
necessary funds. I would respectfully report that £25 would be a reasonable amount
to be paid for the labour required to be performed.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
W. B. JARVIS,Sheriff.
W, B. Lindsay, Esquire,
Clerk of Assembly.

Quebec, 10/^ March, 1855.
Sir,—In compliance with your requisition, I now send you the return of pri-
eoTiers committed to the Toronto Goal, for the ten years ending 1853. This return
has been transmitted to me since my arrival in Quebec.
The goaler has been constantly employed upon its construction since the order
was transmitted to him by me, when not employed in his other duties, and has had
to employ as I understand some assistance in its compilation. As he has been put
to much labour and some expense, I trust that he may receive a small remuneration,
and beg to suggest that twenty five pounds should be allowed him for the services
so performed.
You will observe that he has had to record the proceeding of 11,918 different
entries, and at one half penny for each search and record, the amount would be
£24 16 7.
I have the honor to be. Sir,
Your obedient servant.
W. B. JARVIS,Sheriff.
W. B. Lindsay, Esq,,
Clerk of Assembly.
