FEBRUARY 2013 Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World Q7: The Questions Jesus Asked Lent 2013 Worship Series Why do you worry? Do you want to be made well? Who do you say that I am? I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of questions for God. Questions about the injustices in the world, questions about the heart shattering quality of life, questions about purpose and calling, the list goes on… Most people I know have a pretty important and heartfelt list of questions for God, and are consistently seeking answers, or responses, to those questions. But, what about the questions that Jesus asks? The New Testament bears witness to a Savior who saved the world and asked questions. He asked questions of the crowds around him, of his disciples, and of God. Jesus engaged the people around him through poignant questions. And the response that is given to Jesus’ questions is significant. During Lent, our worship series in all four services will be Q7: The Questions Jesus Asks. We’ll choose a few of the many questions (like the three listed above) by Jesus and explore the questions in our sermons. Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World

Q7: The Questions Jesus AskedLent 2013 Worship Series

Why do you worry? Do you want to be made well?

Who do you say that I am?

I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of questions for God. Questions about the injustices in the world, questions about the heart shattering quality of life, questions about purpose and calling, the list goes on… Most people I know have a pretty important and heartfelt list of questions for God, and are consistently seeking answers, or responses, to those questions. But, what about the questions that Jesus asks? The New Testament bears witness to a Savior who saved the world and asked questions. He asked questions of the crowds around him, of his disciples, and of God. Jesus

engaged the people around him through poignant questions. And the response that is given to Jesus’ questions is significant. During Lent, our worship series in all four services will be Q7: The Questions Jesus Asks. We’ll choose a few of the many questions (like the three listed above) by Jesus and explore the questions in our sermons. I am sometimes asked, “What is the most exciting program of FUMCT?”

“our Go Plan!”I proudly answer!

By “Go”ing outward, we remember that we exist not for ourselves but for others. By giving ourselves in service to others, we learn more about the nature of God’s love and care. our GO Plan challenges each of us to develop our individual Acts 1:8 Strategy of being a witness here in Tuscaloosa, outside the city, and around the world.

our Global Impact Celebration(GIC) helps us to learn about the great work being done outside our doors and celebrate with deeply-committed missionaries. God is at work everywhere. By being involved in missions, we join God in the great work of making disciples and transforming the world.

I encourage you to mark your calendars and attend as much of our Global Impact Celebration as possible. (see pg. 2)

I remember Jim Goodwin, a long-term Methodist missionary to Bolivia, telling the story of one of his churches dedicating a new worship arbor. The people were excited. At the end of the service everyone went outside and joined hands while circling the church. They were about to pray and sing when one of the students came running, saying, “Brother Jim, Brother Jim! We can’t sing facing the church! You told us we excite for the world, not for ourselves!” She was right. Jim then led the people in turning outward, turning their backs to the church, singing and praying their dedication to the world.

The GIC helps me to remember that we sing Christ to the world! I will be here! I hope you will say, “Count me in, too!”

Lent 2013 Small Group StudyTHE WAYour Lent small group study for this year is adam Hamilton’s newest book, “the Way.” using historical background, archaeological findings, and stories of the faith, this book retraces the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his min-istry, including the people he loved, the enemies he made, the parables he taught, and the roads that he traveled. the book is accompanied by short video lectures filmed in the Holy Land. there is also a 40-day devotional guide which accompanies the study.

There will be several sessions of “The Way” offered on Wednesday nights. Sunday school classes are welcome to use the curriculum if you choose. You might even want to lead a small group of friends—perhaps in your home. This is a wonderful study authored by one of the leading pastors and Christian writers in the nation. We hope that everyone will find a group and participate in the study during Lent.

There will be a group leader training session on Sunday, February 10 at 12:15 pm following worship. Curricu-lum will be given out at that time. Contact Chere Flanagan if your class wants to participate or if you would like to lead a group. Ash Wednesday worship is on February 13. Classes and groups studying “The Way” will begin the week of February 17. It is a six week study.

Children’s Ministry Architects Coming Back to FUMCT Mark your calendars for February 17-18, 2013! Children’s Ministry Architects will be back to guide us through a series of three very important meetings. During this energetic, positive process, we will craft four critical docu-ments that will serve as a new foundation for our children’s Ministry Program: 1. The children’s ministry mission statement. 2. Measurable goals with benchmarks. 3. A statement of values. 4. An organizational chart. All sessions will be in the Artos classroom and are as follows: • sunday, February 17: Session 1: 12:15–4:00 p.m. (Lunch will be served) Session 2: 5:00–8:00 p.m. • Monday, February 18: Session 3: 9:00-12:00 p.m. It is vital that we have input from parents (mothers and fathers, grandparents, too) who represent all areas of our children’s ministry: sunday school teachers, Kiddie Kollege parents, VBs volunteers, souled out parents, Wednes-day night participants, WoW hosts & leaders, and parents with all different age children from birth through 5th grade. We hope you will be able to attend all three of these gatherings. We want all of our church families to be a part of this exciting opportunity to help take our children’s ministry from good to great!

DivorceCare Starting February 10Find healing for the hurt of sepa-ration and divorce. Divorcecare is a friendly, caring group of peo-ple who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most dif-ficult experiences. It is seminars and support groups who are led by people who understand what you are going through and want to help. You’ll gain access to valuable Divorcecare resources to help you deal with the pain of the past and look forward to rebuilding your life. AcolytesOur Children Serving in Worship

When I was growing up, being an Acolyte was a big deal! Whether we were bringing in the Light of Christ or helping take up the offering or we were pre-senting the gifts that we bring to God, we knew that our job in worship was an important one. Why else would they make us where these funny robes?!

It is still the same today! Acolytes are not only a vital compo-nent of our Traditional worship service, but most importantly, our Acolyte ministry gives our children a real and tangible way to serve our church and participate in the worship of God. aND…we NEED more acolytes! If your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader would like to help serve in worship as an Acolyte, please do not hesitate to give me a call or send me an email! We will get them trained and placed in the rotation!

Faithfully,

James Seay, Director of Music & Worship, [email protected]
