Southern 500 entertainment brings back sounds of 1970’s Joining Darlington

Raceway’s celebration of theearly 1970’s during Labor Dayweekend will be country musicicon Tanya Tucker.

Tucker, a longtime Nashvillerecording artist, will performthe National Anthem live onNBC for the Bojangles’Southern 500 on Sept. 6.

“We are excited to havecountry music icon TanyaTucker perform our NationalAnthem for the Bojangles’Southern 500,” track PresidentChip Wile said. “Tanya Tuckerhas been a mainstay inNashville since the early1970’s. Her rendition of theStar-Spangled Banner will be acan’t-miss for our great racefans.”

For four decades, Tucker’ssultry voice and vivaciousstage presence has helped tomake her one of the mostadmired and respected femalevocalists in the country musicgenre.

Part of that appeal lies inthe fact that her resume con-tains some of the most ground-breaking songs of the format’s

history. Songs like AlexHarvey’s Delta Dawn, DallasFrazier’s What’s Your Mama’sName and David Allan Coe’sWould You Lay With Me (In AField Of Stone) firmly estab-lished Tanya Tucker as anartist from whom you couldalways expect the unexpected.

Fitting into its platform ofcelebrating the early 70’s dur-ing its Labor Day weekendevents, Darlington Racewaywill have 1970’s rock ‘n’ roll

icon Grand Funk Railroad per-form the Bojangles’ Southern500 Pre-Race Concert.

Grand Funk Railroad, known for its No. 1 hits We’reAn American Band and TheLoco-Motion, is one of the top-selling rock bands of the1970’s. Their 1973 album,We’re An American Band, topped out at No. 2 on the U.S.Billboard music charts.

“What better way to cele-brate the 1970’s and our return

to Labor Day weekend than byhaving rock legends GrandFunk Railroad perform ourBojangles’ Southern 500 Pre-Race Concert Presented byCoca-Cola,” DarlingtonRaceway President Chip Wilesaid. “Grand Funk Railroad’shit songs were some of themost memorable from the early70’s. They are an iconic namein rock music and a tremen-dous fit for our celebration.”

Grand Funk Railroad

includes original foundingmembers Don Brewer andbassist Mel Schacher. Joiningthem is singer Max Carl, whois a rock veteran from 38Special, lead guitarist BruceKulick is best known for his 12years with KISS and key-boardist Tim Cashion.

Grand Funk Railroad’sdrummer, Don Brewer, agrees, declaring, “NASCAR andGRAND FUNK on Labor DayWeekend! God Bless America!”

Kaitlyn Bailey is serving as theDarlington Raceway’s “Lady in Black” fora second Southern 500 race, and recent-ly shared her favorite memories of beingthe ambassador for her hometown’s rac-ing heritage with the News and Press.

What was your earliest memoryof the Southern 500 race?

My grandmother and mother wereboth members of the Miss Southern 500pageant committee for many years. Mygrandmother chaperoned the queensduring race weekend each year, and Iremember the stories she would tell meof all the drivers she would get to meetin the process. As a young girl who wasinvolved in pageants myself, I thought itwas so cool that my hometown race has apageant queen to represent theDarlington Southern 500 at Miss SouthCarolina. I always dreamed of being MissSouthern 500 when I was old enough, but since the pageant is no longeraround, representing the track as theLady in Black was the next best thing!

The Southern 500 parade isreturning this year; do you have afavorite memory of the parade?

In 1994 when I was just 3 years old Iwas Tiny Miss Southern 500. I had theopportunity to ride on the float with allof the other winners and had the besttime. I remember my Mom always tellingme that if I won I would be able to ridein the parade. So, every year after, until Iwas too old to compete, I made sure Itried my very best to win so that I couldride in the parade.

What has been your favoritepart of being the Lady in Black?

My favorite part of being the Lady inBlack has been getting to represent myhometown of Darlington. No only havethe people of Darlington grown to showmore and support of the past years, butso have fans all across the U.S. It hasbeen such an honor to work with such anamazing staff at the track. It has been sogreat to be a part of so much positivechange over the past two years atDarlington Raceway. I have enjoyed see-ing the track regain so much supportfrom locals as (track president) ChipWile and his staff has worked diligentlyto bring back the excitement toDarlington Raceway. It has also beenamazing to see how much NASCAR driv-ers appreciate Darlington Raceway. Eachand every driver I have spoken with hasalways said that they look forward totheir time at Darlington because it issuch a challenging track.

What were your most memo-rable moments of the past twoyears?

Over the past two years there havebeen so many memorable moments. Onethat stands out was when Jeff Gordoncame to the track in March of 2014 tomeet some fans and to donate a check of$5,000 to The Lord Cares food bank inDarlington on behalf of his sponsor,AARP. Another one of my favorite memo-ries was only a couple weeks ago, whenKevin Harvick and Ryan Blaney came toSouth Carolina to help promote theBojangles’ Southern 500 return to LaborDay. We traveled to the State House andthe governor’s mansion, and were joinedby many state political figures andBojangles’ CEO, Clifton Rutledge. It wasamazing to see the two drivers and meetGovernor, Nikki Haley. It was also veryrewarding to see such outstanding sup-port from our state representatives, andtheir excitement for the tradition return-ing to Labor Day weekend at DarlingtonRaceway.

Kaitlyn is a 2010 honor gradu-ate of Mayo High school for Math,Science and Technology, andearned a Bachelor’s degree inPolitical Science from theUniversity of South Carolina. What does the future hold for you,Kaitlyn?

I am currently a 2L at CharlestonSchool Law and will be graduating inMay of 2017 with a Juris Doctoratedegree. I am a member of various clubsand organizations throughout theCharleston legal community and plan tocall Charleston home upon graduating.Over the next ten years I see myselfbecoming a successful attorney andpotentially run for a political office onthe state level. Who knows, you may seemy campaign sign on your local streetcorner in a few years.

Who is your favorite racecardriver of all time? Who you think(or hope!) will win this year?

My favorite racecar driver would

have to be Jeff Gordon. I have been afan since I was old enough to name eachcolor of the rainbow. When I was only acouple years old, I would watch theraces every Sunday on television withmy father. I always kept my eye on whatI called, “the rainbow car”. At the time,Jeff Gordon drove the 24 DuPont Carand the paint scheme consisted of anorange hood with 3 arched rainbowstripes of yellow, green, and blue- withthe same pattern as the hood on therear of the car.

As I matured and began to under-stand the sport, I began to appreciateJeff Gordon for his actual driving skillsas he won seven Southern 500 titles. Asmuch as I love so many other drivers, Iwould love to see Jeff top off his lastyear racing with his eighth Southern500 win. With all the nostalgia sur-rounding the track this year, a win herefor Jeff would be another great exampleof how the tradition has returned toDarlington Raceway.

The Southern 500 Parade: star-studded past, bright futureBy Samantha Lyles

Staff [email protected]

On September 5, the DarlingtonPublic Square will once again playhost to luminaries and racing leg-ends with the return of theSouthern 500 Parade. For decades, the parade drew thousands of spec-tators downtown to greet theirfavorite drivers, wave at beautyqueens, dance along with marchingbands, and – on special occasions –say ‘Hey!” to a Hollywood celebrity.

In its heyday of the 1960s, theSouthern 500 Parade laid out thered carpet, and more than a littlemoney, to secure big-name actorsand musicians as parade GrandMarshals. Small town nativesthrilled to the sight of their favoriteTV cowboys shaking hands withlocals, chatting with youngsters, and even goofing around with lawenforcement.

The parade’s earliest celebrityscore was also one of its biggest, inevery sense of the word. Belovedtelevision lawman James Arness, who portrayed Marshal Matt Dillonfor 20 seasons of “Gunsmoke,”wowed crowds with his heroicstature (6’6”) and charmed folks

with his easygoing, sociable nature. When he visited Darlington in1963, Clint Eastwood was a youngactor in the first blush of fame. Ashandsome cowhand Rowdy Yates inTV’s “Rawhide,” Eastwood wasalready making young ladiesswoon, and he turned many headswhile judging the Miss Southern500 beauty pageant. There was one

notable exception: the visiting MissUSA of that year, a Latvian nativewith Broadway ambitions, told alocal newspaper that she had nointerest in the dashing Eastwood, but preferred to focus on her owncareer. Must’ve been a purely pro-fessional smile she flashed in theirphotos together.

James Arness, who portrayed Marshal Matt Dillon for 20 seasons of “Gunsmoke.”

1965 brought a visit from twomore Dodge City denizens whenMilberne Stone (Doc) and KenCurtis (Festus) arrived. Fully cos-tumed and looking like they juststepped off the “Gunsmoke” set,the pair were photographednumerous times joshing withyoung fans, and even pantomimedan arrest scenario with DarlingtonCounty Sheriff John Hatchell.

Western drama stars wereparade favorites, with ClintWalker (“Cheyenne”) visiting in1962, Peter Brown and WilliamSmith (“Laredo”) in 1966, andJames Drury (“The Virginian”) in1970. Handsome actor RoryCalhoun, star of Darlington-cen-tric feature film “Thunder inCarolina,” was also a parade andpageant guest.

Musicians and comedic actorswere also big hits in Darlington.Alan Hale, beloved for this role asThe Skipper on “Gilligan’s Island,”served as parade grand marshal in1967. George “Goober” Lindsay of“The Andy Griffith Show”shucked-and-grinned his waythrough town in 1969, and DonnaDouglas, immortalized in TV syn-dication as dogpatch goddess EllyMay Clampett on “The BeverlyHillbillies,” did the honors in1970.

Other notable parade marshals, pageant judges, and Southern 500race guests included America’sfavorite First Brother, Billy Carter(brother of President JimmyCarter), Christopher George ofWWII desert adventure show “TheRat Patrol,” Buck Owens of long-running country comedy staple“Hee-Haw,” and actor JamesBrolin of “Marcus Welby, M.D.”

As time passed and money for

celebrity appearances dwindled, the tradition of renting a star forthe Southern 500 Parade slippedinto the past, and the paradeceased in the 1980s. When theDarlington Raceway learned thatNASCAR racing would resume itsold Labor Day Weekend tradition,it only made sense to revive theparade and celebrate this welcomenews.
