Basics For Beginning Astrology

Retrograde motion of a planet involves two points where the planet willstation and change the direction of its motion.

One point (P1) is where the planet stops moving forward and begins tomove backwards through the zodiac. The second point (P2) when theplanet begins to move forward again through the zodiac.

The retrograde period begins as soon as a planet, in forward motion passesthe point where it will begin to move forward again.

For example:

Theretrogradeperiod forMercurylasted from 13Jan 2008until 10 Mar2008 andactivated thedegrees between 08 Aquarius and 24 Aquarius.

On Jan 13, Mercury passed 08 Aquarius 19, the Second Station Degree, where it would station an move direct after the retrograde period. Thisbegins the effects of the retrograde period.

On 28 Jan 2008, Mercury got to the First Station Degree, 23 Aquarius 53,Mercury began its On 18 Feb 2008, Mercury slowed to station at theSecond Station Degree (08 Aquarius 19) and began to move forward onceagain.

On 10 Mar 2008, Mercury moved out of the area of the retrograde.

Astronomical Explanation of Retrograde

Terminology

InferiorWhen an inner planet (Mercury or Venus) first passes between theEarth and the Sun and the planet begins retrograde movement. Thesecond conjunction marking the end of the full retrograde period hasthe inner planet going direct. During an inferior conjunction, theplanet is combust.

SuperiorWhen a planet is on the far side of the Sun from Earth moving direct. The point when a planet is farthest from the Earth. At the SuperiorConjunction a planet is also combust and cannot be seen.

Greatest ElongationIs the pointwhere the planetis the farthestdistance alongthe ecliptic (inthe zodiac) fromthe sun. ForMercury this is28 degrees, forVenus it is 48degrees.Greatest EasternElongation

A planettraveling between the Superior Conjunctions toward thegreatest Eastern Elongation is always Direct. An inner planetappears in the evening sky.(Sullivan)

Greatest Western ElongationAn inner planet appears in the morning sky.(Sullivan)

Elongation for Outer Planets is called Aphelion and Perihelion

Mars to Pluto

The cycle begins when the planet is in a superior conjunction with the sun. This is the fastest apparent motion (from earth) of the planet in its cycle.

When the planet is square the sun (Sun is three signs ahead in thezodiac), the planet appears to slow down. When an outer planet is conjunct the sun, it is at its furthest pointfrom Earth. When an outer planet is in opposition to the Sun, it is at its closestpoint to the Earth, traveling on the same side of the Sun as the Earthis.

During the time when a planet is retrograde, it will always make anopposition to the Sun. The retrograde period for these planets is roughlythe time from the first trine, through the opposition to the second trine.

Interpretations

Mercury retrograde is time to examine elements of transitionalchange before active period.Good time to re-connect

On Retrograde Interpretations

It is important to check the placement of the retrograde planet, theareas of life it rules, the applying aspects, and receptions. 1Retrograde indicates a return to the previous situation.1In natal charts, retrograde planets can indicate a repeated pattern inthe person's life.1It is a big debility (-5) when judging the strength of a significator.1Retrograde can indicate slowness or in a quick and unexpected way. 1Lilly found Retrogradation a positive testimony when assessingquestions involving something returning - such as someone from along trip, missing animals or people etc.Lilly found Retrogradation a negative in cases where an illness mightreturn, a traveler being impeded by some unfortunate circumstance. 1In a natal chart, a retrograde planet in the first house can indicate ashortened life.1Olivia Barclay: When the slower moving of the two planets isretrograde, there can be sudden, unexpected problems during theretrograde period, but when both planets are retrograde, then thingshappen slowly, or fraught with delays.1James Wilson quote Placidus as saying that retrograde planets cancall illness. His theory was that planets nearer the earth, in perigeedisrupt the atmosphere.1Vivian Robson: retrograde planet is weaker than one that is directand usually promises more evil or good than it performs.Vivian Robson: Retrogradation weakens both good and evil planetsalike, and does not make a malefic planet more evil, as is sometimesstated.

Vivian Robson: A planet that is stationary is always of very greatimportance and its influence in a map is thereby greatly accentuated.Vivian Robson: When within 8° 30’ of the Sun a planet is said to be“combust”, and this was considered a weak and unfortunate positionby the ancients, though less harmful to Mercury than to the otherbodies.

Note that Venus and Mercury are both combust duringretrograde periods.Other planets are in opposition during retrograde periods

Retrograde transits for change

A retrograde period is the time where we can most easily make change inhow we use a specific planet's energy. It is a good time to create new habits.2

One notices dissatisfaction with our habitual use of planet's energy asthe planet enters the retrograde zone. This is the degree of theSecond Station where the planet stations and returns to directmotion. 2"During the retrograde period, there is an opportunity to examinewhat we need, want or are missing." This is from the first station orlast degree of the retrograde period. When the planet goes direct, we can easily take action to to build newhabits or ways of doing things.2

This starts at the Second Station Degree continuing through theentire retrograde period to the degree of the first station. 2

Scientific Prejudice: It's not easy when an individual, nomatter how distinguished, challenges the status quo, thecommonly held assumptions. This is one of the worsthurdles in science today - for controversial results theanswer should be "How could that happen?" rather thandestruction of the career of the scientist. Here we examine afew cases where the ostracized scientist was ultimatelyproved correct after years of hardship.
