President’s Report

Happy new year everyone. 2018 came and went so quick. Already we are at the end of January 2019. What do we do with our time ? As I write this report for Allan, Desiree and I are in Cairo, Egypt. This is truly a remarkable land and I could fill a couple of pages about driving conditions, condition of vehicles, road rules, and travel in general. We have been told that to be a driver in Egypt, you need 3 things. 1. GOOD BRAKES. 2 GOOD HORN. 3. GOOD LUCK - And the last is most important. I know that Dean Pedler would be happy driving here because the place has many, many Peugeot cars and wagons especially for taxis. This we are told is that they have less trouble with the extreme heat in summer and they are very solid cars. Old 126 Fiats are common as well as Ladas from Russia. Built like a tank but not very reliable. Anyway more about those things later. Our AGM has been set and I look forward to catching up with all at the meeting. The format of the election of officers will change this year and we have asked our public officer, Bill Brock to be our returning officer. Events have already been planned and our calendar is starting to fill. So if you are aware of a visiting club or clubs or have an event that our club many be interested in, please contact Kay Sando so that she is made aware. We will need to have a working bee when the weather cools down so that we can put the pavers in place and tidy up the rear of the hall. Hopefully we can set a time at the meeting. Ros now has the member information booklet available to members who have joined recently and if you would like one, please see Ros. All the information will be up on our webpage as well. I look forward to a fun year with you all and may you continue to ENJOY THE DRIVE Regards Warren

Open Day April 7th Our Open Day at the Clubrooms has been set for the 7th April. We will be inviting other

automotive clubs and people who have had dealings with our club to that day to ‘show off’ our new rooms. Keep the weekend free if you are able as there will be many activities happening. Our club will be catering for meals so help would be appreciated with the weekend’s activities.

Rock’n’Roll Run Sat. 16th March Once again the ‘club run’ for the month of March will be in conjunction with the Rock’n’Roll

festival in Renmark. The ‘run’ will leave from the Renmark Hotel on Saturday morning and will travel through the other towns in the Riverland meeting up with other entrants at various points along the way. A Show’n’Shine will then be held along Murray Ave. in Renmark after the run. Times and pick-up points will be detailed in the March Radiator.

Mark this in your calendar to be a part of this weekend.

~~~~~~~~~~ One of the many things no one tells you about agingis that it is such a nice changefrom being young.
November run to Werrimul
In the December Radiator there was a brief report on the Sunday run to Werrimul and lunch at the Hotel. The attendance list for the day was omitted from that magazine, so it has been inserted below.
It was pleasing to see some of the motorcycle group attending this run.
“THE TICKING TIME BOMBS RISKING LIVES ON SA ROADS” -The “Advertiser” 3/11/18 :
This article was certainly evocative enough to give the struggling car industry a boost I’m sure but exaggerates one potential reason for our dreadful road accident history. The facts are that a very small percentage of accidents are the result of mechanical failure (old cars or young) and most are simply human error, lack of proper basic training and dreadful roads( now made more so because of the huge increase in goods, grain etc. ,taken by road and not rail -the optimum choice most logical minds would choose surely?!).
I have become increasingly concerned by the constant “fiddling” with so-called “safety features” in the last decade – many of which only add to the distractions facing modern drivers and cocooning same with a false sense of security. There is no artificial replacement for concentration, awareness of other drivers’ lack of ability (which must be assumed at all times – just in case!)and the realization that there’s no point being in the right legally, if you’re dead!
Yes ,I was lucky enough to begin learning in an era when cars were basic and traffic much lighter admittedly but the principles instilled from the age of 10-11 have helped keep me accident-free for 60 years. I took pride and still do in driving well( in manual transmission cars particularly) out of respect for my vehicle and others around me (hit the wrong pedal- how many times are we going to hear this?!). No GPS, confusing cameras, mobile phones or power steering with which to over-correct and finish on the wrong side of the road( a very likely occurrence if you haven’t been put in that situation to practice it and they don’t – trust me I’ve had a confirming letter from an official Driver Training Safety Officer ) or even, unbelievably, a TV set to distract! Teach ‘em well and teach ‘em young in basic vehicles will always (in my humble opinion) be the recipe for a better long-term outcome. Artificial devices are fun for the computer whiz-kids to develop and play with, but there are some aspects of driving which cannot be delegated.
Have you come across this vehicle ? My son and I had a 1968 HK Brougham ready for restoration when it was stolen from his shed in Rochester. It is Burgundy black vinyl roof, and ivory trim. If any member has come across this vehicle or heard of it please let Malcolm or the authorities know. We believe it may have been moved to SA. Serial no 1220900 Engine no 30744653K1012 Is listed as stolen with Vic police and Vicroads. Thanks. Malcolm Tubb Are you looking for a challenge to fill in your spare time ? For sale, VW Type 34 Karmann Ghia - 1964. Project car. Car is probably 90% complete but is in very rough shape. It has extensive rust and the mechanicals are in unknown condition ( motor is seized) Extremely rare car and has interesting history. The car is saveable by someone confident in doing welded rust repair and panel fabrication. Located in Sydney but could be delivered to the Riverland for a fee. $500
If you are interested see Allan Carthew or see below for details. This car was to be restored but the owners have bought a new challenge and this one has to go. Darryl Carthew | Proprietor M 0412-618-023 E [email protected] www.theclassicfactory.com.au
Historic Motorcycles With no organized runs during December or January there is little to report on the Historic Motorcycle scene, although I am sure many of the bikes were given a run or 3 during the break. Certainly I had mine out a few times when the temperature wasn’t in the 40s!!. The Sellick’s Beach races are on again this year on the 16th – 17th February, and once again the Team Dempsey will be putting in an appearance with a fleet of bikes – I think it is 5 this year ! After the success last year I am sure they will be a force to be contended with again this year. I will be heading for Sellick’s Beach on those days and am looking forward to some exciting racing on the sand. With the All British Day coming up in early February (10th) there will be a display of many British bikes on the Echunga Oval, and this is usually a great display of bikes and cars from the British factories. Our club will be represented again this year by 5 or 6 members who make the annual pilgrimage to this event with their cars. Hopefully it won’t be too hot. The motorcycle feature this year is to be on Heritage racing machines (not our club member Heritage !) Also early in the year (Feb. 22nd – 24th) is the Yorke Peninsula rally, this year to be held in the little town of Coobowie on Lower Yorke Peninsula rather than the usual (for the last few years) site at Pt. Vincent. This is always a great event too with some very different scenery from here and pretty country to ride through. Entries for that close on Feb. 7th if you are interested. Again a few members of our club will be attending that. So we will see you for our first club run of the year on Feb. 3rd . Good and safe riding Allan Carthew
Some people try to turn back their odometers.Not me!I want people to know whyI look this way.I've travelled a long wayand some of the roads weren't paved. First you forget names,Then you forget faces.Then you forget to pull up your zipper...it's worse whenyou forget to pull it down.
