Key findings for the years 1992 to 1999

The total income from the retail trade in motor vehicles and accessories, excluding Value Added Tax (VAT), increased from R35 396,1 million in 1992 to R65 644,5 million in 1999, which reflected an average annual growth rate of 9,2% during this period.

The average annual growth rate of 9,2% in the total income from the retail trade in motor vehicles and accessories, between 1992 and 1999, was due to the average annual growth rates of 11,8%, 10,6%, 7,0% and 6,5% reflected by the income from the sales of used vehicles, the income from the sales of new vehicles, other trading income and workshop income respectively.

The contribution of income from the sales of new vehicles to the total motor trading income increased from 34,7% in 1992 to 38,0% in 1999, while the contribution of the income from sales of used vehicles to the total motor trading income, increased from 18,7% in 1992 to 22,1% in 1999.

Notes

Prior to January 2000, Stats SA collected and published information on retail trade in motor vehicles including Value Added Tax (VAT). Due to users' needs, specifically compilers of National Accounts, Stats SA has overhauled and re-designed the retail trade in motor vehicles questionnaire. As from January 2000, Stats SA collects information regarding motor trade sales excluding VAT. In order to provide users with a continuous time series, Stats SA has calculated retail trade in motor vehicles excluding VAT for the period January 1992 to December 1999 which is published in this statistical release.

Introduction

The retail trade in motor vehicles survey is a monthly survey covering a sample of private enterprises (firms) operating in the motor trade industry in South Africa. The results of the survey are used to compile estimates of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its components, which are used to develop and monitor government policy. These statistics are also used by the private sector in analysis of comparative business and industry performance.

Purpose of the survey

The information on retail trade in motor vehicles, including VAT, which was previously published in the monthly statistical release P6343.2 entitled Retail trade in motor vehicles and accessories, was divided by 1,10 for the period January 1992 to March 1993 and 1,14 for the period April 1993 to December 1999 in order to exclude VAT from the motor trading income (cf. figure 2) and is published in this statistical release.
