RETAIL PERFORMANCE FLORIDA

Luxury, Jewelry, and Accessories retailers accounted for 20%

of the 50 most efficient firms measured in sales per sq. ft.

The high price of jewelry coupled with the smaller footprints

(2,510 sq. ft. average) contributed to the strong ranking.

Following the Luxury, Jewelry, and Accessories segment,

Casual Dining Restaurants (14%) and Brand Manufacturers

(10%) rounded out the top three in terms of space

efficiency.

A closer look at specific companies profiles show a leading

electronics company recorded the highest sales per sq. ft.

figure over the last twelve months, averaging $5,275.

Convenience Store operator, Murphy USA, also had a strong

efficiency showing, coming in at over $3,700 in sales per sq.

ft. With an average store size of 500 sq. ft., Murphy USA has

the smallest footprint of all the eMarketer tracked retailers.

Another top performer with regard to sales per sq. ft.,

Tiffany & Co. registered at $2,845. The Luxury, Jewelry and

Accessory retailer has a store footprint that averages a 4,100

sq. ft. Sales of luxury goods face headwinds as foreign buyer

traffic has been reduced in the face of a stronger U.S. dollar,

which may cause sales to decline for this retailer.

Those stores experiencing the lowest sales per sq. ft. over

the last year predominantly fell within the Leisure and

Entertainment segment. Movie theatres Carmike Cinemas

(acquired by AMC), Regal Cinemas, Cinemark Theatres,

AMC Theatres and Cineplex Entertainment were in the

bottom 25. Movie theatres are predicted to fair better post-

recession due to rising disposable income, however the

industry competes with the increasingly popular option of

cheaper on-line media sources.

Department store company, Sears Holdings (owner of Sears

and Kmart) continued to experience declining sales and

store closings, putting this company near the bottom of the

list in terms of sales per sq. ft. The company continues to

assess store productivity while focusing on its on-line

business and membership programs.

The National Retail Federation estimates that 2.7 million

jobs are supported by retail in Florida where there are nearly

275,000 retail establishments contributing to 21% of state

GDP. The state’s robust retail base will be supported by

continued annual job growth, which was 3.2% in August

and increases in disposable income.
