Retail in Netherlands and Belgium

• In 2010 Belgium retail sales reached €64 billion (€35.2 non-food) retail sales are expected to rise to €65.9 billion in 2011

• In 2011 in NL retail sales are forecasted to reach €85.5 billion (2010 non-food €53.3)

• 2011: Supermarkets in BE Delhaize has 25.9% marketshare, Colruyt has 24.6% and Carrefour 22.7%. Carrefour closed 16 Belgian stores in 2010, but is growing again in 2011.

• Ahold (Albert Heijn) is the largest retailer in NL – 33.5% of the Dutch supermarket share – part of (public) Royal Ahold group which has €29.5 billion turnover. Albert Heijn opened it’s first store in BE in 2011. In NL, Albert Heijn is aiming to increase non-food products.

• Most Dutch supermarkts (ex Albert Heijn) are family owned and part of a buying group.

• Hema is leader in mixed goods and is expanding in NL and BE as well as into Germany

• Private label is a growing market in 2011 with 39% overall market share in BE and 27% in NL (volume), but eg. pet food in BE goes up to 60% but personal health products only 14% in NL

Ecommerce in Benelux

•Net users in the Netherlands shop online more than in any other Western European country but spend less per capita. 82% broadband subscribers in NL.•Dutch online retail and travel sales value 2011: €8 Billion by approx €10 M online shoppers (population of €16m)•Like in other continental european markets, the Benelux countries have limited shop opening hours, so online shopping become more appealing.•Online shopping in NL has grown even faster since the introduction of iDEAL, an online payments system in late 2005•Belgium is moving slower with E-commerce but growing and is forecasted to be worth €1.7 billion in 2011 •1 in 4 online shoppers in BE made first purchase between June 2010-11
