THE ART OF THE PRIVATE SERVICE RESUME
By Donna Shannon, President, The Personal Touch Career Services Resumes: seems simple enough, doesn’t it? A list of experience, some top key skills, a mention of your education, and then you are good to go, right? Not so. Like poetry, resumes are deceptively simple. Within the span of a few pages, you must convey who you are, what you can do, and where you have done it while sprinkling in the relevant key words to pass the screening procedures. Add in considerations of format and style, these two (or more) pages become even more challenging. Plus, private service has its own unique demands that aren’t present in any other industry. For example, an Estate Manager resume is very similar to the CEO of a top corporation. The entire career must be covered, which could easily be more than 15 or 20 years. All areas of expertise must be shown so that the employers can appreciate just how much this potential employee can do for them. Often times, a detailed personal summary or profile is included to give the employers and agencies insight into who you are as a person, serving as the biography or executive summary to go beyond the facts and stats of your past employment or education. That being said, there are some tactics that are universal regardless of industry. While the resume samples in this book follow a fairly standard placement of information and sections, they can easily be adjusted to highlight different key factors in different ways. Your most important information:
1. Who you are 2. What you can do 3. Where you’ve done it 4. Bonus: How does all of this apply to their needs – especially if you are transitioning from a different
industry. Additional Items to consider:
1. Most agencies will request a picture – it is acceptable to imbed a high quality picture on the resume. Even if it is not a professional headshot, you can improve the image quality by paying attention to lighting, backgrounds, and picture resolution.
2. Whatever is most important should be listed on the first page.
If you just graduated from a well-recognized private service school, this may prompt placing the Education section ahead of the Skills area.
3. Keep the formatting agency-friendly.
Complex formatting makes it more difficult for agencies to incorporate their own style or branding onto the resumes before they send them to potential employers.
4. Keep in mind your personal branding – how does your personality and beliefs make you ideal for this
industry? “Your personal brand should represent the value you are able to consistently deliver to those whom you are serving.” – Glenn Llopis, Forbes

Professional Profile: I believe in giving people credit and lifting them up – whether they are my staff members, vendors or my principals.
Sharing this positive attitude is the key to helping people succeed in life. This is how I knew I had a genuine service
heart, one of the most critical attributes for anyone in the private service industry.

STYLISH BLOCKS RESUME- USE WITH CAUTION
While this particular resume has a modern and beautiful design, it is primarily built with tables and text boxes. For many application systems, this can cause problems when uploading the data, as computers interpret the data in a very different way than humans read it. This is a great option when you can send the PDF via email directly to an employer or the principals’ company or family office.
