PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) warns individuals of unofficial websites offering assistance in filing for unemployment benefits. These websites request credit card information and charge a fee for providing advice or job services to individuals.

“We ensure our services are secure with your personal information,” said state Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman. “These websites are not associated with South Dakota state government and could put you at risk for identity theft.”

There is no need to share confidential information with a third party or pay a fee to file for unemployment insurance benefits. Claims for unemployment insurance benefits should be filed on the DLR website at www.sd.uiclaims.com or by phone at 605-626-3179.

Unemployment insurance provides temporary financial assistance for people who have lost their jobs, through no fault of their own, until they find employment. South Dakota’s unemployment insurance program is financed by employers through payroll taxes; workers do not contribute to this plan.

Can your business and job seekers find each other? A new tool is available to help make the connection. With the new Resume Upload tool on MoveToMitchell.com, job seekers can provide their resume and indicate fields they are interested in. Resumes that match your business can then be sent directly to you – giving you the chance to find candidates who may not know about your company.

USS South Dakota Crew Visit

Chamber Inaugural Cornhole Tournament

The 2016 Cracker Barrel sessions were held on Monday, February 1st and Friday, February 26th at Mitchell Technical Institute. Senator Mike Vehle and Representatives Tona Rozum and Josh Klumb were available for questions from the public. If you have questions or comments for any of your legislators, you can find their contact information on the South Dakota Legislature website: www.legis.sd.gov.

Hundreds came out to celebrate the dedication of the new Dakota Wesleyan University/Avera Sports & Wellness Complex. Community members were able to tour the facility and learn about what is now possible at the new facility.

The crew of the USS South Dakota, a Virginia Class submarine expected to be completed and commissioned in August of 2018, visited Mitchell and the Corn Palace during their visit to South Dakota. The Mayor welcomed the crew personally and introduced them to the crowd over a breakfast social at the Corn Palace on February 4th.

We had a great turnout of 17 teams for our first Chamber Cornhole Tournament! Everyone had a great time and we were able to hand out cash prizes to winners, several door prizes including 4 sets of bags from Get Pinned and a couple of Mitchell Money prizes to winners of side challenges! The tournament would not have been possible without our sponsors:

New Corn Palace Billboards 5th Annual WingapaloozaNew billboards have gone up on I-90 and along Hwy 37 utilizing some new fun messaging of the World’s Only Corn Palace. Check out some of the finished products!

Big Things Happening Across the State

Mitchell had a great presence at the National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic last month in Kansas City, MO. The Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau along with sixteen partners had great exposure to approximately 29,000 pheasant hunters. Thank you to the 16 partners who teamed up with us for this year’s event. We did our best to position Mitchell as the premier location for phenomenal pheasant hunting and make a grand presence for those hunters choosing their fall hunting destination!

Mitchell is widely recognized for the overwhelming hospitality and the phenomenal hunting. Items donated by Cabela’s, Kelly Inn, Graham Mobile, The Depot Pub and Grill and Boyd’s Gunstocks Inc. for the daily drawing were in high demand and kept people coming back to our booth! Daily winners were from Amboy, IL; Shawnee, KS; & Linwood, KS. Visitors were extremely interested in coming to the Mitchell area to hunt, many with stories to share of past hunts in South Dakota. This was an amazing opportunity to make contact with those that make Mitchell a place to experience and we will be following up with each individual who expressed interest!

National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic is a celebration that focuses on wildlife conservation, upland game bird hunting, sport dogs, wildlife habitat management and restoration. In connection with the event, Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever held seminars on habitat improvement, hunting, shooting sports, wild game cooking, dog training, conservation and more! Next year’s event is planned for February 2017 in Minneapolis, MN.

2016 Partners included: Granite Springs Lodge, Pheasant Country Pheasants Forever, Mike Kuchera’s South Dakota Guide Service, South Dakota Pheasant Country Hunting, Kelly Inn and Suites, Kieffer Pheasant Hunting LLC, Folan Ranch, Rosewood Barn, Hampton Inn, Potter’s Fields Outfitter’s and Lodge, Anderson Kennels, Cabela’s, Ramada Inn and Suites, The Depot Pub and Grill, Graham Mobile and Boyd’s Gun Stocks.

The Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau website attracts an average of 5,000 unique visitors every month and over 65,000 unique visitors annually. For less than a penny per unique visitor, you can reach these prospective visitors and drive them to your website! A unique visitor is a statistic describing a unit of traffic to a Web site, counting each visitor only once in the time frame of the report.

The annual cost to advertise on the homepage of visitmitchell.com is $250. Your investment includes your logo on the homepage of visitmitchell.com with a hyperlink to your website. For more information please contact Jen at the Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau office at 996.6223 or via email at [email protected].

The start of the year has flown by and we could not be more excited about the upcoming tourism season! The Mitchell CVB has attended the American Bus Association trade show in Louisville, KY, National Tour Association trade show in Atlanta, GA, The South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Pierre, SD and attended National Pheasant Fest in Kansas City, MO last month. We have left each of these with great contacts and fun ideas for the upcoming tourism season.

Big things are happening this summer here in our great state as South Dakota will celebrate 100 years of the National Parks Service and 75 years of the completion of Mount Rushmore. Here locally we are excited to showcase the finished renovations at the World’s Only Corn Palace with the addition of the Oscar Howe Art Gallery, the Prehistoric Indian Village will wrap up the 4th stage of a renovation to

the Boehnen Memorial Museum and the Dakota Discovery Museum will continue their great momentum with their monthly family friendly nights at the museum. Guests can also visit our unique specialty shops, ranging from antiques to artwork, souvenirs to western wear, candy to crafts, quilting to gifts.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a broad array of fishing, golf and camping opportunities, including those along the shores of Lake Mitchell.

As you know Mitchell is a perfect stop over with 1,000 hotel rooms and great restaurants located along I-90, and is just four short hours from Mount Rushmore! If we can help your business prepare for the upcoming season, please don’t hesitate to reach out by calling 605-996-6223.
