Trashing "River City"? It hasbeen upsetting to see some localsand tourists casting bottles, wrappers,. sacks, and cups about.

The beautiful qualities of"River City" are compromised bythese careless acts. As today'syouth are so attuned to the, environment... why would Ihey notcare for oU,r parking lots, streets, and sidewalks (as well).

We all need to mount a freshnew campaign - elll our trashbins and not our walk ways withjunk. Indeed. many "trash.tag.gel'S" are loose among us. Lets alltum a negative 10 a positive byhelping to keep Ruidoso clean. Its a beautiful city... it's your Gity..Lets keep it ordedy and Glean.

If 'a little child shall lead them' .we'll just follow Robert Temple

No, we're not being facetious; Robert 1;emple Is the11-year-old fiflh-grader who did everything right last weekafter getting Separated from his father and finding himselflost in the rugged countrY near Hale Lake east of RuidosoDowns. .

Because he did everything right, the intensive nighttime search mounted by White Mountain Search &Rescue and other volunteers had a happy ending.Robert's pre-arranged rifle shot signal led the rescuers tohis camp shorUy after midnight on Feb. 19.

It was a miserable night to search, one of continuousrain mixed with sleet, heavy mud and almost Impossiblevisibility. Bul tHe searchers found the youngster in goodshape - dry, well-fed (so was his dog) and happy' he'dld-

c n't have to spend the night In a little tunnel he had dug.Betty Beachum, the field coordinator for the rescue,

had high praise for Robert; she called the boy the "perfectsubjecf' if a search was necessary. He was wearing arain-repellenl jacket, carried food and water, and had hisdog along for company.

Robert had lived if! Ruidosp for only five months, andthe landscape was far different from the country aroundFreeport, La.; where he had spent lots of time hunllngwith his father, Mike. (He and Mike had agreed long agoon how 10 signal if they became separaled - three rifleshots, a pause, Ihen three more shots.)

Whal Robert did partiCUlarly right, when he found hewas losl, was 10 stay pUI. He dug in, built a fire, cookedhimself and his dog Spikel some food, then wailed. ThaI'ssomething for all of us who live In mountainous UncolnCounty to remember. Even a short Sunday afternoon hikethis lime of the year can end tragically. Beachum notedthallhree other searches during the past year ended withIhe recovery of bodies.

Robert's rescue had some other positive resulls, s"jdBea<:hum. Several volunleers who helped i'f tHe searllh(including Robert's dad) have expressed an· Inleresl Injoining ·the search and rescue group.
