Year 2 SATs
When will I know my child’s
results?
Tests are marked by teachers and a
score will be given. This score will be
based on an average of 100. Scores
below 100 will be considered below
average; someway above 100, con-
sidered above average.
These scores will then be used
alongside classroom work for
teachers to give a final judgement
on a child’s attainment.
Children will be judged to either be:
Working towards the expected
standard
Working at the expected
standard
Working at a greater depth of
the expected standard.
You will be informed of how your
child has attained in their school
report in early July.

When do SATs take place?
Year 2 teachers are required to
administer the tests during the
month of May. The exact times and
dates are left to schools to decide.
We will ensure children do the
tests in as relaxed an environment
as possible and therefore, will
spread them out over a number of
days or weeks.
The tests are not strictly timed, but
have guidelines for teachers to
follow. The following times are
suggested:
Reading paper 1 and 2: 30 minutes
Maths paper 1: 20 minutes
Maths paper 2: 35 minutes
Spelling: approximately 15 minutes
Punctuation and grammar: two
sections, 10 minutes each.
Children with SEND or EAL
For some children who have special
educational needs or English as an
additional language, it would not
be appropriate for them to sit the
tests, however a teacher assess-
ment judgement will be given. Your
child’s class teacher will talk to you,
if this is the case for your child.

mixture of selecting the right answers
e.g. through multiple choice and
writing short answers.
What are SATs?
Towards the end of Year 2, all children
in England sit SATs (statutory tests
and tasks). These are designed to
measure children’s attainment and to
give an indication of the progress
they have made since they started
school.
In KS1 a teacher assessment is the
main focus. Teachers use their
knowledge of how a child has per-
formed over time in class. Test scores
are used as part of this judgement.
Maths
The new Key Stage 1 maths test will
comprise of two papers.
Paper 1: arithmetic
Paper 2: problem solving and
reasoning
In paper 1 children’s mental calcula-
tions are tested for them to answer
questions involving addition, subtrac-
tion, multiplication and division.
In paper 2 there will be a variety of
question types covering all elements
of maths such as shape and measure,
as well as numerical problem solving.
No resources are allowed.
Writing
Teachers will be asked to make a
judgement on children’s writing. Using
strict guidelines, they will decide
whether children are working below,
at or above expected standards.
