When do SATs take place?

Year 2 teachers are required to

administer the tests during the

month of May. The exact times and

dates are left to schools to decide.

We will ensure children do the

tests in as relaxed an environment

as possible and therefore, will

spread them out over a number of

days or weeks.

The tests are not strictly timed, but

have guidelines for teachers to

follow. The following times are

suggested:

Reading paper 1 and 2: 30 minutes

Maths paper 1: 20 minutes

Maths paper 2: 35 minutes

Spelling: approximately 15 minutes

Punctuation and grammar: two

sections, 10 minutes each.

Children with SEND or EAL

For some children who have special

educational needs or English as an

additional language, it would not

be appropriate for them to sit the

tests, however a teacher assess-

ment judgement will be given. Your

child’s class teacher will talk to you,

if this is the case for your child.

The new reading paper for Year 2

pupils will consist of two separate

papers:

Paper 1: a booklet in which children

read short pieces of text and answer

questions

Paper 2: a longer reading booklet for

which children answer questions in a

separate writing booklet.

There will be a variety of questions

such as multiple choice, matching,

labelling, short and long written

answers.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

Children will sit two separate papers.

Paper 1: a 20-word spelling test

Paper 2: a grammar, punctuation and

vocabulary test . This will involve a

mixture of selecting the right answers

e.g. through multiple choice and

writing short answers.

What are SATs?

Towards the end of Year 2, all children

in England sit SATs (statutory tests

and tasks). These are designed to

measure children’s attainment and to

give an indication of the progress

they have made since they started

school.

In KS1 a teacher assessment is the

main focus. Teachers use their

knowledge of how a child has per-

formed over time in class. Test scores

are used as part of this judgement.

Maths

The new Key Stage 1 maths test will

comprise of two papers.

Paper 1: arithmetic

Paper 2: problem solving and

reasoning

In paper 1 children’s mental calcula-

tions are tested for them to answer

questions involving addition, subtrac-

tion, multiplication and division.

In paper 2 there will be a variety of

question types covering all elements

of maths such as shape and measure,

as well as numerical problem solving.

No resources are allowed.

Writing

Teachers will be asked to make a

judgement on children’s writing. Using

strict guidelines, they will decide

whether children are working below,

at or above expected standards.

Teachers will judge children’s:

Sentence structure

Use of vocabulary

Punctuation

Handwriting

Spelling
