Campfire ban, watering restrictions & Step 3 Campfire ban Effective at noon today, June 30, campfires, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the provinc. This prohibition will remain in effect until noon on Oct. 15, or until the order is rescinded. The BC Wildfire Service takes these extreme heat conditions seriously. Additional precautions are being undertaken throughout the province, including fire warden pa- trols, fixed-wing aircraft patrols and an active enforcement presence. Wildfire preven- tion is a shared responsibility. Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable and divert critical resources away from lightning-caused fires. Also prohibited: use of fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, binary exploding targets, tiki and similar kinds of torches, chimin- eas. In Merritt, all small confined fire permits are rescinded until the fire ban ends. Increased watering restrictions in City of Merritt Effective today Wednesday, June 30, the City of Merritt has increased watering restrictions, prohibiting use of sprinkler systems more than 2 days a week. Residents with even numbered house- holds will be allowed to water on Monday and Friday, residents with odd numbered houses will be allowed on Tuesday and Saturday. Within this, automatic irrigation systems are allowed and encouraged between midnight and 4am. Manual sprinklers are permitted between 6am and 8am, and between 7pm and 10pm. Hand-watering with a controlled flow nozzle can be done at any time. The City will also be increasing Bylaw patrols to support reduced watering and provide information regarding watering. Residents who are using sprinklers outside the permitted hours and refuse to turn them off when requested will be ticketed. Step 3 of restart plan on July 1, end of state of emergency The emergency will be lifted on June 30 at 11:59pm. During Step 3, businesses will gradually transition to new "communicable disease plans", with guidelines for these plans released by WorkSafeBC on June 28. These plans will continue to include physi- cal barriers at many business and retail settings. Capacity limits, formal health screen- ing tests and directional arrows, and other physical distancing measures will no lon- ger be required. However, they may still be used during this transition period. There is 'return to normal' for: gatherings (fairs, festivals and trade shows, with commu- nicable disease plans); Canada-wide recreational travel; normal hours for liquor service at restaurants, bars and pubs with table limits & no socializing between tables; sports and exercise facil- ities, with communicable disease plans; and mask wearing recommended (but no longer mandatory) in indoor public spaces for all people 12 and older who are not yet fully vaccinated.
