Natural Maths: Ensuring Students Do the Thinking. This year our school is continuing to explore ways to improve each student’s mathematical reasoning. During our recent pupil free day staff undertook further training in the use of the ‘Natural Maths’ teaching method, developed by Ann & Johnny Baker.

The ‘Natural Maths’ approach to mathematics teaches children how to undertake a range of computational strategies to solve maths problems and is designed to foster each child’s ability to understand mathematical processes at a very deep level. Rather than being taught how to do “SUMS” in a lock step manner, with little understanding of why a particular process is being used, children are given opportunities to use a wide range of strategies to arrive at solutions and to explain their thinking.

To learn more about the “Natural Maths approach to Teaching”, parents can go to the website http://naturalmaths.com.au Here you can view videos that explain the techniques we will employ to create more numerate students. Students who enjoy maths and are confident in their own abilities to solve mathematical problems.

‘Natural Maths’ based lessons consist of three parts.

1. The introductory Task: This is a time for students to practise mental computational routines (whole class)

2. The Main Task: When children engage with a problematised situation, game or investigation (groups, pairs or individually.

3. The Reflection Task: Here children share and extend their thinking and formalise learning as a community of learners.

The Secret Code.

The ‘Natural Maths’ method introduces students to the concept of a SECRET CODE. This is simply the use of initials to identify 18 specific mathematical strategies. In doing so it provides students with a tool to communicate their thinking and make it visible to others. If you have any questions about ‘Natural Maths’ the Principal Mark Hansen can answer them.

Missing, presumed read! We are missing a number of books from our parent library. Some of the more popular and contempory books by Mark Le Messurier, and ‘Say What You See’ by Sandra R Blackard deserve a wider audience. If you come across one on your shelf, the bedside table

or behind the bedhead, we would love to have them back to share.

Next Term

As well as Twilight Play, we are planning a number to Saturday play sessions that provide a special time for fathers and male carers and their children to attend the preschool and enjoy the facilities. Each second session will be especially organised for dads and their infants. Philip Altmann will be providing his introduction to Mindfulness Course, a short course for men as well as the usual monthly support sessions for graduates of the introductory courses. Yoga, First Aid for parents,

National 2016 School Aerobics Championships in Gold Coast

On Saturday August 6th, Ardtornish Primary School was represented by the school’s 2 aerobics teams in the School Aerobics National Championships held on the Gold Coast. Both teams did extremely well, with Energize coming 12th in their division and Aloha Girls coming 6th in their division. The team that won gold in the Aloha girls section were also from SA and Aloha girls had tied with them at the State competitions a few weeks before the Nationals. I would like to commend all of the girls on their behaviour and sportsmanship at the National competitions, they should all be very proud of their performances. I would also like to thank all of the parents for their support and Shanisse Edson (coach) for all of her hard work and commitment to getting the girls ready for Nationals

All dance groups performed at the musical showcase held on Tuesday 13th September doing a fantastic job. We have had 2 very successful weeks of tryouts for next year’s team selections and letters will be coming home with students in the 2 weeks. The Ardtornish Dance Sports Groups also held a very successful quiz night on Saturday 13th of August. It was a great night with lots of competitiveness and fun times had by all. We would like to thank everyone for their support and donations. The overall winners were Miss Ravlich’s team.

This term in Japanese we have had a whole-school (R - 7) focus on the Hiragana alphabet. Students have been learning to read the 46 basic characters of the alphabet using mnemonics from the Hiragana in 48 minutes program, as well as practising character formation with attention to stroke order in their writing and sharpening their pronunciation skills via class games with some being played on the starboard.

Students in Years 4/5 – 7 have been studying Hiragana for homework and have had fortnightly tests to gauge their learning. Many students have risen to this challenge and have learnt to read and write the characters from memory, receiving coloured “belts” in recognition of their learning. The following students have achieved particularly high results:

In other exciting news, Ardtornish has entered the North Eastern Primary Schools Hiragana

Competition this year.

This competition was first set up at Ardtornish and is being held at Greenwith Primary this year,

celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The Ardtornish team will be competing against other local schools to see whose students can

read their Hiragana the fastest and the loudest!

All entrants receive a certificate of recognition, a Japanese prize, as well as sushi and cake to

enjoy at the end of the competition. Go Ardtornish!
